# A kids' floor sofa arch in oatmeal, ochre and rust, with the smallest dome pulled out

*Hana reads a three-piece corduroy rainbow for what holds it up: foam that must be a seat, a step and a wall, sometimes in the same minute.*

> **The quick answer:** A kids' floor sofa shaped as a nesting rainbow arch works because each piece stands alone: the outer arch, the middle arch and the small dome are separate seats. For a toddler seat or step, the foam has to hold its curve under a whole child. Ask how firm each piece is, and check the footprint against the room first.

## Pinned by Hana: a set taken apart

Five pins, from the pale outer shell to the rust dome slid forward onto the rug.

1. **Pale outer arch**: A light outer shell lets the warm inner colors glow like a sunrise.
2. **Ochre middle arch**: Ochre sits one step deeper than the outer shell.
3. **Rust dome pulled forward**: Slid out in front, the smallest piece works as a separate seat or step.
4. **Knit bear on peg rail**: A hanging toy balances the window on the other side of the frame.
5. **Window light**: Side light picks out the rib texture on the pale arch.

## Four arches from the same playroom, side by side

| Set | Outer arch | Middle arch | Center | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This reading | Pale oatmeal | Ochre | Rust dome, pulled out | A light shell lets a warm core glow |
| Ochre set | Ochre | Rust | Cream | Warm outside, pale heart |
| Taupe and sand | Taupe brown | Sand | Cream | Tonal and quiet on a round rug |
| Mustard, rust, teal | Mustard | Rust | Teal blue | Spread flat for play, three separate seats |

## What the foam has to do inside a rainbow

Three pieces. One curve inside another. The smallest has been slid forward onto the rug.

That small move explains the set. The rust dome works alone, as a toddler seat or a step up to the window. The ochre arch is a tunnel, then a rocker, then a backrest. The pale oatmeal shell is a wall to lean on. A [kids' floor sofa](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-floor-sofas/) like this gets sat on, climbed, tipped and stood on.

So the foam carries the design. A curve reads as a curve only if it holds its line under weight. Too soft, and the arch sags when a child sits on its crown. Too hard, and it stops being a cushion. Ask how firm each piece is, and read the [cushion firmness scale](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-firmness-scale-1-to-10/) with a child's weight in mind, not your own.

The cover is [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) with a box edge and no piping, so nothing hard sits on the curve. Side light from the window picks out the ribs on the pale shell. On ochre and rust they go quiet.

The room is cream: walls, linen curtains, a star-dotted jute rug on oak boards. The outer arch sits close to all of it in tone, so the eye goes straight to the warm core. A wall ledge of picture books, a peg rail with a knit bear and a woven basket keep the toys up and the floor clear for play.

Children measure comfort with their whole body.
A dome becomes a step.
The foam decides whether it stays one.

## Under a loft bed: a seat after school, a bed for friends

A parent in the US wrote about the space under a 12-year-old's loft bed. They wanted one piece that could be seating after school and a place for friends to sleep over, about 70 to 75 in long.

The workshop said these cushions are very comfortable to sleep on, and that most buyers get them for children. It suggested 24 x 70 in or 27 x 70 in (61 x 178 cm or 69 x 178 cm).

Dead space under a loft bed becomes a lounge. For sleeping, a level surface matters more than softness. The Pattern on [floor sofa bed sizes and firmness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/floor-sofa-bed-size-firmness/) covers that part, and more builds for the same kind of space sit in [closet nooks and under-loft hideaways](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/closet-and-under-loft-bed-nooks/).

## Buyer questions: length, fabric and small metal parts

**A common question:** Could one floor cushion be made really long, around 108 in?

**The workshop's answer:** Very long cushions are made in two pieces. A 108 x 40 in (274 x 102 cm) velvet floor cushion, for example, was made as two 54 x 40 in (137 x 102 cm) cushions that sit end to end.

**A common question:** What is the floor sofa covered in, and what else can I choose?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard fabric is corduroy. It can also be made in linen, canvas-weave linen, velvet or other named fabrics, and the workshop sends swatch charts to choose from.

**A common question:** One of the metal brackets arrived missing its rubber foot, and another is scratched. Can I get replacements?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a photo and the workshop ships replacement bars or feet. For brackets that are scratched but still work, it offered a partial refund as an alternative to new bars.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the rug for the arch spread out, not nested. If all three pieces fit on it apart, the room is big enough for play.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can each piece of a rainbow arch floor sofa be used on its own?

Yes. The outer arch, the middle arch and the small dome are separate pieces. Slid apart, the smallest works as a toddler seat or step, and the arches become backrests, tunnels or rockers.

### How firm should the foam be in a kids' floor sofa?

Firm enough that a curved piece keeps its shape when a child sits or stands on it, soft enough to still be a cushion. Ask about firmness piece by piece, and judge it by a child's weight rather than an adult's.

### What size floor cushion works for sleepovers under a loft bed?

For a space of about 70 to 75 in, the workshop suggested 24 x 70 in or 27 x 70 in, and noted that these cushions are very comfortable to sleep on. Measure the width under the bed frame first.

### Why put the lightest color on the outside of a rainbow arch?

In a cream or neutral room, a pale outer shell blends with the walls and curtains, so the ochre and rust inside read as a warm core. The set looks calmer and the brighter colors stay contained.
