# An oatmeal corner floor cushion beside a ladder bookcase, and how to order one right the first time

*An all-oatmeal seat has nowhere to hide a mistake. Get the code, the thickness and the list of pieces right in your first message, and the cushion that arrives will be the one you pictured.*

> **The quick answer:** To order a corner floor cushion right the first time, send the fabric code (such as L01 for a natural oatmeal linen-look), every dimension including thickness, and a list of the pieces you want: seat, backrest, armrests. If you need several pieces, ask for a set price, since extra-thick floor seats quoted piece by piece add up fast.

## An oatmeal linen-look seat: nothing but texture

Oatmeal is not a color you can order. Ask five people to picture it and you get five fabrics. The corner floor cushion in this photograph was ordered by code, L01, a natural oatmeal linen-look, and that is why it came out calm instead of beige by accident.

Look at what the seat does without any color at all. It is a box-edge seat with self piping in the same oatmeal, so the edge is drawn by a shadow line, not a contrast. Two flanged backrest pillows in the same cloth lean on the wall behind it. Seat and backs read as one quiet piece, and the eye goes to the weave. The sheer white curtains filter the window light, so the slub of the linen-look shows, little thick and thin threads catching the haze.

The cool comes from the room. The walls are a pale blue-gray, and the low-pile rug is dusty blue, bringing the wall color down to the floor. The wide oak boards add just enough warmth to keep it from feeling chilly. A white ladder bookcase leans nearby with the books in arm's reach, a trailing pothos softens the shelf edge, and a line-drawing print gives the wall something to say without adding a color.

The lesson is plain: for a floor seat that melts into a light room, order seat and backrest in one fabric code and bring the color in through the rug. See the [corner floor cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/) in the Atlas, the [linen-look fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) in the Swatch Library, and our note on [real linen versus linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/guides/real-linen-vs-linen-look-cushion-fabric/). Which corner of your house has the soft light at reading time?

## Pinned by Harlan: sheer, seat, backrest, ladder, rug

Five pins go from the sheer curtains at the window to the dusty blue rug, one small decision each.

1. **Sheer curtains**: Filtered light shows off the slub of the oatmeal weave.
2. **Oatmeal backrest**: Matching pillows and seat make a calm, all-neutral piece.
3. **Self-piped seat**: Piping in the same oatmeal gives definition without color.
4. **Ladder bookcase**: A leaning ladder shelf keeps books within reach of the seat.
5. **Dusty blue rug**: A soft blue rug brings the wall color down to the floor.

## The first message, in six lines

1. **Name the code, not the color**: Copy the fabric code off the chart, L01 for this oatmeal. A color name is a description; a code is what gets cut.
2. **Ask for close-ups**: If two codes look alike on the chart, ask for larger photos of both. Texture shows better up close.
3. **Give every dimension, thickness included**: Length, depth and thickness for the seat, and the same for any backrest. Floor seats are often ordered extra thick, and thickness moves the price.
4. **List the pieces**: Seat, backrest, armrests: say which ones make your set, so one quote covers all of them.
5. **Ask for a set price**: Need back and arms too? Ask what the whole set comes to.
6. **Check the confirmation**: Read the code on your order back against your note before production starts. It is the cheapest proofreading you will ever do.

## An 8 in floor seat, a backrest, two arms and a budget

A buyer in the US wanted a floor seat for a bedroom, 56 x 20 in (142 x 51 cm), and thick: 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm), with a 6 in (15 cm) backrest. The first answers came back piece by piece, one quote for the 8 in seat and another for a 6 in piece, and together they ran well past what the buyer meant to spend.

So the buyer did the sensible thing. They pointed out that the listing they had found, a tufted linen floor cushion, was a full set, and they named their budget. The workshop agreed to make a 20 x 52 x 8 in (51 x 132 x 20 cm) seat with a backrest and two armrests, all for that figure.

There is no shame in naming a number, my friend. Extra-thick floor seats cost more to make, and pieces priced one at a time add up fast. Ask for the set, say what you can spend, and let the maker work out the best version of it. A seam is a promise, and so is a quote. Our note on [what to send for a custom cushion quote](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-cushion-quote-what-to-send/) lists the rest.

## Buyer questions: a bigger corner sofa, a wrong color and a vacuum pack

**A common question:** How big can the corner sofa go? I'd like about 110 inches on one side.

**The workshop's answer:** The long side can go up to 94 in (239 cm). The other side is 78 in (198 cm), made of a 39 in (99 cm) sofa plus a 39 in ottoman, and that largest layout was quoted as its own configuration.

**A common question:** My couch came in a different color from the one I asked for. What happens now?

**The workshop's answer:** When the workshop missed a color change on an order, it apologized and remade the couch in the right color at a reduced price. Keep your chosen code in writing so the check is quick.

**A common question:** Can I keep the sofa in its vacuum packaging for a few months until I move?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop advises against long storage in vacuum packaging. Open the packages and let the cushions expand to their full shape.

> Order a floor cushion by fabric code, not by color name: oatmeal means five different fabrics to five people, and L01 means one.

> **Tailor's margin:** Want a backrest and two arms on an 8 in floor seat? Ask for one set price before single-piece quotes pile up.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What is a flanged backrest pillow?

A pillow finished with a flat fabric border around its edge instead of piping. On an all-neutral floor seat it adds a soft frame and a little tailoring without bringing in any new color.

### Is a linen-look fabric the same as real linen?

No. Linen-look is an upholstery weave made to show the slubby, matte texture of linen; real linen is the natural fiber itself. The oatmeal in this corner seat is a linen-look, code L01.

### Why ask for a set price on a floor seat with back and arms?

Pieces quoted one by one add up quickly, especially at 8 in (20 cm) thick and more. One buyer's separate quotes went past their budget; asked as a set, the workshop made a 52 in seat with backrest and two armrests within it.
