# An oatmeal bench cushion on a white bench, and where the budget should go

*One cushion, one book, one pair of slippers. Nate splits the bill into what lasts and what can wait.*

> **The quick answer:** Spend on a custom bench cushion where it lasts: exact measurements, the right thickness and a cloth you will still like years from now. Save on the extras: a plain rectangle, no backrest for now, one piping color and styling from things you already own. On white-painted wood, a contrast welt such as brown on oatmeal is worth keeping.

## Pinned by Nate: five readings of a lived-in bench

Five pins, from the brown welt that separates cushion from paint to the linen curtain that matches the cloth.

1. **Book and glasses**: An open book with glasses on top is the lived-in detail that shows the bench is for sitting.
2. **Brown piping**: Dark welt draws a neat line between the oatmeal cushion and the white bench.
3. **Felt slippers**: Slippers underneath place the bench in a bedroom or landing, not a busy hall.
4. **Framed prints**: Oak frames repeat the floor tone and balance the tall curtain on the left.
5. **Linen curtain**: The curtain's flax color is almost the same as the cushion, linking wall and seat.

## The plate: an oatmeal box cushion on white paint

The bench is painted white, the wall is warm white, and the cushion is oatmeal greige linen-look, code L-06, finished with a brown tweed piping. On oak, that welt would be a pleasant extra. On white paint it is structural: it is the only line telling your eye where the cushion ends and the frame begins.

The proportions are plain on purpose. A box-edged rectangle runs the length of the seat with nothing hanging over. The props do the styling: an open hardback with tortoiseshell reading glasses on top, gray felt slippers underneath. The slippers place this bench at the foot of a bed or on a landing, not in a busy entry.

The palette holds because every other object sits in the cushion's color family. The sheer linen curtain is nearly the same flax as the cloth. The oak frames on the two botanical prints repeat the floor, and the jute rug carries the tone down to the ground. Few objects, all related. That is the cheapest way I know to make a room look finished. What is your bench made of, painted pine or bare oak?

## Spend here, save here: a bench cushion budget in six lines

| Item | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Measurements | Spend time, not money | A wrong number costs a whole cushion; a sketch costs ten minutes |
| Thickness | Spend | It sets the seat height you live with every day |
| Cloth | Spend a little | A calm linen-look outlasts a trend color you will tire of |
| Piping | Keep to one color | On painted wood, a single contrast welt does the framing |
| Backrest | Save for now | A seat on its own is a complete job |
| Styling | Save | A book, glasses and slippers you already own |

## The trapezoid that didn't close

A buyer wrote in about a window seat in a vacation home: a trapezoid with a 47 7/8 in (121.5 cm) long side, a 37 in (94 cm) short side and 16 1/8 in (41 cm) of depth, in linen L06 with L42 piping. The same oatmeal L06 as this bench.

The shop ran the numbers and found they did not form a closed shape, so it asked for a sketch. The sketch showed one 90-degree corner, which changed the geometry, and the shop's calculation put one edge at 18 7/8 in (48 cm).

The buyer kept 16 1/8 in (41 cm), because a small wood protrusion sat in the way and they were away and could not re-measure. The zipper went on the 47 7/8 in side, and a handmade tolerance of ± 3/8 in (± 1 cm) was noted on the order. Angles are just lengths in disguise, partner: mark the right angles and the obstructions on your sketch. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) checks that your sides close before you send them.

## Buyer questions: exact sizes, true black and backs without sides

**A common question:** Can you make a bench or window seat cushion in my exact size, like 68 x 39 1/2 in or 32 x 81 in? Just the bottom part for now.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, any custom size can be made: 68 x 39 1/2 in (173 x 100 cm), 32 x 81 in (81 x 206 cm) or 24 x 76 in (61 x 193 cm). The shop will also ask if you want a matching backrest, and a seat on its own is fine.

**A common question:** Is this fabric actually black? I need a true black, and the stripe looks navy to me.

**The workshop's answer:** Several fabrics that look black on a screen are not. P72 is dark gray with white dots, the N07 stripe is a very dark navy that passes for black in photos, and corduroy code 03 is dark brown. There is no black corduroy in the range, so ask for a photo before you order.

**A common question:** Can I order straight backrests without the side section, so I can line up two sofas?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Straight backrests come in 39 3/8 in (100 cm) lengths, and the alternative is a 39 3/8 x 39 3/8 in (100 x 100 cm) corner backrest. When one buyer added a second L-shaped sofa, the shop included two straight backrests free.

## On the cutting table: the bedroom bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Custom bench cushion, full-length rectangle |
| Fabric | Oatmeal greige linen-look, code L-06 |
| Piping | Contrast brown tweed |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Setting | White painted bench, warm white wall, jute rug |
| Styling | Open book, reading glasses, felt slippers |
| Budget move | Seat only now; a backrest only if you miss one |
| Best for | Bedroom benches, foot-of-bed seats, landings |

> On a white-painted bench, contrast piping is structure, not decoration: a brown welt on an oatmeal cushion is the only line between cushion and frame.

> **Tailor's margin:** If a trapezoid's four sides don't close on paper, look for the right angle and draw it in. That one mark fixed a 47 7/8 in (121.5 cm) window seat.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is contrast piping worth choosing on a painted bench?

Yes, on white or pale painted wood. A darker welt, such as brown on oatmeal, draws the line between cushion and frame that the paint cannot. On oak or walnut the wood already does that job, so self piping is usually enough.

### Where should I spend money on a custom bench cushion?

On the parts you use every day: accurate measurements, the right thickness for your seat height and a cloth you will not tire of. Styling, backrests and extra pillows can wait, or come from what you already own.

### Does a linen-look fabric suit a bedroom bench?

It suits it well. Linen-look cloth gives linen's flax color and texture, and oatmeal or greige ties into sheer curtains, oak frames and jute rugs, so a bedroom looks finished with very few objects.

### What size tolerance should I expect on a handmade cushion?

Small. One trapezoid window seat order carried a noted tolerance of ± 3/8 in (± 1 cm). Give exact measurements, mark obstructions such as wood protrusions on the sketch, and let the maker add any fit allowance.
