# An oatmeal bench cushion with rust piping, and where each color came from

*Pale oak, plaster, filtered light, one terracotta pot. Hana traces each color in the room back to its source.*

> **The quick answer:** An oatmeal linen-look bench cushion suits a chunky light-oak base because the pale, nubby weave keeps the heavy wood from looking bulky, while rust piping taken from a terracotta planter warms the oak and leads the eye along the seat. Borrowing piping color from a pot or vase already in the room is the easiest way to make a cushion look planned.

## Where the rust came from

Look at the far left first. A terracotta pot.

Now look at the edge of the seat. The same color, drawn as a thin line.

That is the whole idea of this bench. The piping was not chosen from a card. It was lifted from something already in the room.

The base is light oak, with deep drawer fronts and black bar pulls. Heavy wood. A dark cushion would make it heavier. Oatmeal does the opposite. This [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) sits on the oak like a folded blanket, and the drawers seem to lose weight.

Proportion helps. The box is about two-thirds the height of the drawer fronts below. Enough to look upholstered. Not so much that it looks like a mattress. Height is a feeling, and this one feels calm.

The light comes through sheer linen. It is soft and slightly warm, so the oatmeal reads creamy rather than gray. In a north-facing room the same weave would look cooler. Hold a swatch against your own wall at midday before you decide.

Then the pillows. Olive velvet at the back, the one deep color, framing the seat. A fringed macramé pillow beside it, handmade and matte. Two textures that do not compete, because one shines and one does not.

On the oak block to the side: cotton stems in clear glass, stacked stoneware bowls. Natural, unhurried. They keep the corner from looking styled.

A [linen-look bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) in oatmeal is a quiet choice. The rust line is what makes it yours. The Pattern on [matching or contrast piping](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) has more pairs to try.

A pot.
A line.
A seat that looks as if it grew there.

## Pinned by Hana: seat, line, velvet, macramé, pot

Five pins follow the color from the terracotta pot to the rust line, the oatmeal seat and the two pillows against the wall.

1. **Oatmeal seat**: A pale, nubby weave keeps a chunky oak base from looking heavy.
2. **Rust piping**: Rust picks up the terracotta planter and warms the pale oak.
3. **Olive velvet pillow**: The olive velvet is the one deep color, set at the back so it frames the seat.
4. **Macramé pillow**: Fringed macramé adds a handmade, boho texture beside the smooth velvet.
5. **Terracotta planter**: The pot color is where the rust piping came from.

## Three colors, three sources

- ✓ Rust piping, from the terracotta planter
- ✓ Olive velvet, from the leaves growing in that planter
- ✓ Oatmeal seat, from the plaster wall and the sheer linen curtain

## A long seat, a soft back, no hook-and-loop

A designer wrote to the workshop about a deep lounge banquette for a client. One seat, 98 1/2 in (250 cm) long, 17 3/4 in (45 cm) deep and 7 7/8 in (20 cm) thick, in a single piece. A backrest too.

The workshop made the backrest in two pieces, filled with shredded foam, so it stayed soft against the firm seat.

The designer asked for extra-strong hook-and-loop tape. The suggestion came back: [ties or a non-slip fabric base](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/) instead. Simpler to live with.

The bench was dark denim blue. Fabric 908 matched it.

Thick seat. Soft back. A base that grips.

## On the cutting table: the oak drawer bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Bench cushion, rectangular, box edge |
| Fabric | Linen-look weave in oatmeal |
| Piping | Contrast, rust |
| Proportion | Box about two-thirds the height of the drawer fronts |
| Base | Light oak drawers with black bar pulls |
| Pillows | Olive velvet and cream macramé with fringe |
| Grip | Ties or a non-slip base rather than hook-and-loop tape |
| Best for | Living room, entry and bedroom storage benches |

## Buyer questions: a near-black stripe, a sofa that sleeps, a word for the edge

**A common question:** Is the black-and-cream striped fabric really black? I want it on a walnut bench.

**The workshop's answer:** N-08's dark stripe is a very deep navy that reads almost black, and its light stripe is a natural cream rather than bright white, with a slightly braided texture. For a true black stripe, choose N09.

**A common question:** Can the big L-shaped floor sofa be laid out as a bed, or a kind of conversation pit?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The cushions can be laid out flat and used as a bed.

**A common question:** What is the thin strip that runs around the edge of the cushion called?

**The workshop's answer:** That is piping: a cord covered in fabric and sewn into the seams. It can match the cushion or contrast with it, for example black piping on a light linen trapezoid cushion.

> **Tailor's margin:** Hold the oatmeal swatch against the wall at midday. Oatmeal reads creamy in warm light and grayer facing north.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a cushion be on a chunky drawer bench?

Thick enough to look upholstered, not so thick that it reads as a mattress. On this bench the box is about two-thirds the height of the drawer fronts. Check your seat height too, since every inch of cushion raises it.

### Does oatmeal fabric look different in a north-facing room?

Yes. Cool north light pulls oatmeal toward gray, while warm light through sheer curtains makes it creamy. Judge a swatch against your own wall at midday and again in lamplight before you order.

### Should piping match the pillows or the room?

Either works, but taking it from an object in the room ties the cushion to the space: rust from a terracotta pot, navy from a rug, black from drawer pulls. Pillows can then add a second color without repeating the piping.
