# Herringbone porch swing cushions, read from the steps and the seat

*Callum reads a rope-hung swing twice, once from ten feet and once at arm's length, and notes what each distance tells you about stripe, rope and depth.*

> **The quick answer:** From ten feet away, a herringbone stripe porch swing cushion reads as a calm neutral stripe; up close it shows a woven texture that hides dust. This swing carries a deep boxed seat and two back cushions in taupe, gray and ivory outdoor acrylic, hung on white rope. For a swing used as a lounger, go deep on the seat and add backs.

## Pinned by Callum: five marks, near and far

Five pins, from the pale blue ceiling overhead to the gray boards under the swing.

1. **Deep swing seat**: A deep boxed seat fills the swing like a daybed.
2. **Back cushion**: Two back cushions rest against the rails so the swing becomes a real sofa.
3. **White hanging rope**: Rope instead of chain keeps the look soft and coastal.
4. **Pale blue ceiling**: The classic porch-ceiling blue adds a cool note above the neutral stripe.
5. **Gray painted floor**: Herringbone stripes in taupe and charcoal sit well with gray boards.

## Two readings of one swing: from the steps, then from the seat

From the porch steps you see three things. A white swing. A long neutral stripe. A pale blue ceiling. At ten feet (3 m) nothing else registers, and that's the first test every porch swing cushion has to pass.

The stripe passes. Taupe, gray and charcoal on ivory sits easy on gray painted boards and white clapboard, and nothing argues with the ceiling blue. Out here the shape matters more than the pattern: a deep boxed seat fills the swing like a daybed, and two back cushions rest against the rails. From the steps it reads as a sofa that happens to hang.

Now walk up and sit. The stripe turns into a weave. Each band is a small herringbone, and the zigzag breaks up the surface, so pollen, dust and a damp paw print don't jump out the way they would on a flat solid. The [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) vanishes at ten feet; up close it keeps the box edge straight. Right trade for a porch.

The rope changes with distance too. Far off, thick white rope reads soft and coastal. Close in, it's quiet, with no chain links by your hand.

The cloth is [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), and a covered porch still takes blowing rain, friend. Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything; the [winter storage Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/) has the routine, and the [porch swing sizes Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/porch-swing-cushion-sizes/) has the tape-measure part. What does your swing look like from the bottom step?

## Ten feet out vs arm's length, detail by detail

| Detail | From 10 ft (3 m) | At arm's length |
|---|---|---|
| Herringbone stripe | A calm neutral stripe | A zigzag weave that breaks up dust and marks |
| Seat depth | A sofa, not a bench | Room to lie back or curl up |
| Self piping | Invisible | Keeps the box edge straight |
| White rope | A soft, coastal outline | Thick and quiet, no chain |
| Pale blue ceiling | The one cool color | Out of sight once you sit |

## Measurement notes: the swing set

## 74 inches, one curve, and a wide photo

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a floor cushion for a foyer nook, about 74 x 24 in (188 x 61 cm), with one side curving along a stair railing. The workshop first suggested its quarter-round corner cushion. The nook wasn't a corner, though, so the buyer asked for one straight side instead.

Before quoting, the workshop asked for three things: a paper drawing with sizes, the two straight dimensions so the curve could be calculated, and a wide photo of the whole area.

That's the same two-distance reading as this swing. The tape measure gives you the close-up. The wide photo gives the ten-foot view: how the piece sits in its space. Send both, for a swing or anything else. The [curved cushion Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/curved-cushion-chord-rise-radius/) covers chord and rise, and more hanging seats are under [porch swing cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/porch-swing-cushions/) and [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: covers only, curves and a nursery chair

**A common question:** I already have foam. Can you make just zippered covers for it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send your foam sizes. One porch swing got covers only, with extra-strong zippers and no inserts: a 55 1/4 x 27 3/4 x 4 in (140 x 70.5 x 10 cm) seat and a 50 x 13 x 4 in (127 x 33 x 10 cm) back pad.

**A common question:** Could you make slightly curved trapezoid chair pads with ties to match my bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop asked for a detailed paper drawing of each size first: back width, front width, the length of the curved side and where the ties go. Shaped chair pads can't be priced from a list of numbers alone.

**A common question:** Can you replace the 5 inch seat and back cushions on our nursery armchair?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A 20 x 22 x 5 in (51 x 56 x 13 cm) seat and a 21 x 27 x 5 in (53 x 69 x 13 cm) back were quoted together. They're filled with fiber and silicone balls for comfort, and thicker than 5 in (13 cm) is possible.

> **Tailor's margin:** Judge a porch swing fabric from 10 ft (3 m) for pattern and from arm's length for weave. It has to pass both.

> A porch swing cushion has two tests: at 10 ft it should read as one calm shape, and at arm's length its weave should hide the dust.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I turn a porch swing into a lounger with cushions?

Fill the whole platform with a deep boxed seat, then add back cushions against the rails instead of relying on one thin pad. Measure inside the frame from front rail to back, and between the hanging points, before you order.

### Is herringbone a forgiving pattern for porch cushions?

Yes. From a distance it reads as a plain stripe, and up close the zigzag weave breaks up the surface, so dust, pollen and small marks show less than they would on a flat solid in the same color.

### Rope or chain for hanging a cushioned porch swing?

That's a style call more than a cushion one. Thick white rope looks soft and coastal and stays quiet; chain reads more traditional. Either way, measure the seat width inside the hanging points so the cushion doesn't press against them.
