# A neutral geometric bench cushion on a teak bench by the hot tub

*Wet feet, dripping towels, gray everything. A hot tub bench gets chosen for the splash, not for the photo.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom outdoor bench cushion beside a hot tub works best in a small, regular print on a pale ground, with mid tones that hide drips and splashes. Here a taupe, gray and white geometric plays against teak slats as stripes, plain white towels as the calm, and a fern as texture, and it covers only the seat.

Rolled towels and a fern keep the styling simple.")

## Where the stripes come from

Nobody sits on a hot tub bench dry. That's the first rule of choosing a cushion for one, and this photograph follows it.

Everything around this teak bench is gray: the inflatable tub under its cover, the sandstone pavers, the fence panels behind. The cushion takes that gray, adds taupe and beige, and ties itself to the teak. It's a small, regular tile print on a pale ground, quiet from across the patio and crisp up close. Drips land on a mid-tone pattern and blend in.

Now the pattern mixing, and it's cleverer than it looks. There is only one printed textile in the frame. The stripes come from the teak slats and the fence boards. The plain comes from two rolled white towels at one end, which mark this as the drying-off bench and leave the print on show. The texture comes from the pavers and one fern in a white pot, the only green in the scene. A pair of flip-flops says somebody actually uses this. One print, wood for stripes, plain cotton, a single plant: that's the whole recipe.

The cushion covers only the seat. The slatted back stays bare, so the cushion is light to carry indoors after a soak. Self piping holds the geometric to a straight line along the front edge.

Pick [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) for a seat like this, and know what it is and isn't. Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. The difference is set out in [water-repellent versus waterproof cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/), and more seats like this live under [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/). What's the wettest seat at your place, friend?

## Pinned by Callum at the tub

Five pins, from the rolled towels to the piped front edge.

1. **Rolled white towels**: Towels rolled at one end mark this as the hot tub bench and leave the pattern on show.
2. **Inflatable hot tub**: The tub's gray is picked up by the gray tiles in the geometric print.
3. **Potted fern**: The only green in the frame softens a scene made of gray and wood.
4. **Flip-flops**: A small everyday detail that shows the bench is used for drying off.
5. **Piped front edge**: Self piping holds the geometric pattern to a straight line along the front.

## Mixing patterns by the water, in six moves

- ✓ One small, regular print on the cushion, on a pale ground.
- ✓ Let the wood be the stripes: teak slats and fence boards.
- ✓ Keep the soft goods plain: white towels, no second print.
- ✓ Add one living texture, like a fern in a white pot.
- ✓ Pipe the edge in the print's own cloth, so no new color arrives.
- ✓ Cover the seat only, so the cushion travels indoors fast.

## Red, and the two questions that came first

One buyer wrote in wanting a solid red cushion to match a rug, with cream or beige piping. Before a single swatch went out, the workshop asked two things: indoor or outdoor, and solid or pattern.

That sounds slow. It's the fastest course there is, because it decides which chart the search starts in. With indoor and solid settled, the workshop sent photos of two reds, 937 and 118, and the buyer chose a cranberry that looked perfect against the rug. A late change of address came in afterward, and the parcel still went to the right door.

Tell the maker indoor or outdoor, and solid or pattern, before you say a single color name. At the tub, outdoor is the first word you write. The fabric families are compared in [acrylic, olefin or polyester](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-fabric-acrylic-olefin-polyester/).

## Buyer questions: shapes, tolerance and a red

**A common question:** Can an inverted T-shaped cushion and a plain rectangle be made the same thickness?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Both can be 2, 3 or 4 in (5, 7.5 or 10 cm) thick. For the T shape, send a simple sketch with every dimension and where the cut-outs go.

**A common question:** How close to my numbers will the finished cushion be?

**The workshop's answer:** Cushions are handmade and filled with soft foam, so small variations of about 3/8 in (1 cm) fall within the stated tolerance. When one needed 16 1/8 in (41 cm) of depth and came out 3/8 to 3/4 in (1 to 2 cm) short, the workshop still remade it.

**A common question:** I'd like a solid red to match my rug, with cream or beige piping. Which red should I pick?

**The workshop's answer:** Before naming a red, the workshop asks whether the cushion is for indoors or outdoors and whether you want a solid or a pattern, since that decides which chart to search. For this buyer it then sent photos of reds 937 and 118.

> **Tailor's margin:** Let the teak slats be your stripes. Put one small print on the seat cushion and keep the towels plain white.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is outdoor acrylic enough for a bench right beside a hot tub?

It suits sun and splashes, but water-repellent is not the same as waterproof. Let the cushion dry between soaks and carry it indoors after use, which a seat-only cushion makes quick.

### How many patterns can go around one outdoor bench?

One printed textile is plenty when the setting brings its own lines. Teak slats, fence boards and paving already read as stripes and texture, so keep towels and pillows plain and let a single plant add softness.

### Why cushion only the seat and leave the slatted back bare?

A seat-only cushion is light enough to carry in after every use and has less to dry. The bare teak back also adds a warm stripe that balances the gray tub and pavers.

### Can outdoor piping be cut from the same print as the cushion?

Yes. Self piping cut from the same geometric holds the front edge to a straight line without adding a new color, which matters when the print is small and regular.
