# A navy striped window seat cushion, layer by layer: what is worth the money and what costs nothing extra

*My grandmother spent real money on exactly two things for her porch cushions and let the rest go. This oak reading seat follows the same rule.*

> **The quick answer:** On a custom window seat cushion, put your care into thickness and fabric toughness, and save where no special order is needed. A cover is sewn to one foam thickness, so changing it later means a new cushion. A notch was priced the same as a plain rectangle, and a size off the menu only needs your real numbers in the order note.

## Pinned by Rosa: stripe, edge and oak box

Start at the stripe and work down to the oak: each pin marks a spot where this seat spent or saved.

1. **Navy wide stripe**: Stripes laid front to back make a long, narrow seat feel deeper.
2. **Square box edge**: The front face lines up with the oak plinth so cushion and joinery read as one.
3. **Books and mug**: Parked at the wall end, they give scale and invite a longer sit.
4. **Pilea on the sill**: A single green plant softens the crisp navy-and-white graphic.
5. **Oak box seat**: Honey oak warms the navy so the nautical stripe doesn't feel cold.

## Reading the seat from the stripe down to the plinth

Most of what makes this window seat last was decided before anyone cut a stripe.

Start at the top. Wide navy and white stripes run front to back, not side to side, so a long, narrow seat reads deeper than it measures. On a [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) that runs wall to wall, that trick costs nothing; it only depends on which way the cloth is laid. [Stripe direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) deserves one line in your order note.

Next, the edge. A square [boxed edge](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#boxed-edge) with [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) cut from the same stripe. A contrast cord would draw a ring around the seat. Self piping keeps the edge crisp while the front face sits flush with the oak plinth below, so cushion and joinery read as one built piece.

Then the part you can't see: the foam. Its thickness was set once, to the box, and the cover was sewn around it. That is where to spend your thinking. A cushion that is too thick, forced between two walls, buckles at the corners and wears faster.

As for the cloth, kids and dogs are the real quality control. Keep a cotton stripe like this indoors, in a spot such as a [reading nook](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/); the whole family is under [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/).

Now the room. Honey oak on the box and the window frame warms the navy, so the stripe never feels cold in that warm window light. Warm gray walls and a braided jute rug stay plain, because the stripe is the only pattern allowed. Hardback books and a speckled stoneware mug sit at the wall end to give scale and say stay an hour. One pilea in a stoneware pot on the deep sill softens all that graphic navy. Not one throw pillow was needed.

How deep is your seat, from the window wall to the front of the box?

## Spend or save on a window seat cushion, one layer at a time

| Layer | Spend or save | What past orders show |
|---|---|---|
| Foam thickness | Spend the thinking | The cover is sewn to one thickness; 2 in (5 cm) foam in a 4 in (10 cm) cover sits loose and baggy. |
| Notch or cut-out | Save | A notched window seat cushion was priced the same as the plain rectangle. |
| Size off the menu | Save | Pick the closest listed size and write your real numbers in the note. |
| Fabric for hard use | Choose with care | No double-rub certificate to quote; outdoor fabrics are the toughest option. |
| Piping | Save | Self piping from the stripe; on one armchair quote, same-color piping came free. |
| Styling | Save | One two-color stripe carries the room; books, a mug and a plant do the rest. |

## Two benches, two lengths, one closest size

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about two window benches of different lengths. They wanted tufted velvet cushions at 46 x 22 in (117 x 56 cm) and 69 x 21.5 in (175 x 55 cm), and neither size was in the dropdown. The workshop said to choose the 20 x 48 in (51 x 122 cm) option and it would cut the exact sizes, then quoted both, each in its own color.

In the end the buyer ordered only the smaller cushion from the workshop and got the longer one locally. Nothing wrong with that, neighbor. A budget can be split bench by bench. The lesson I keep: choose the closest listed size, put the exact size in the note, and the maker cuts to your numbers. There is more on [sizes that aren't on the menu](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-size-cushion-not-on-menu/).

## Buyer questions: thickness, rub counts and notches

**A common question:** My bench cushion is too thick to sit on comfortably. Could I just slip thinner foam into the cover I already have?

**The workshop's answer:** A 2 in (5 cm) thickness is available, but the existing cover was sewn to fit 4 in (10 cm) foam, so thinner foam inside it would sit loose and baggy. For a proper result, order a 2 in cushion with its own cover in the same size and fabric.

**A common question:** Do your fabrics test above 50,000 double rubs?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop has no official double-rub (Wyzenbeek) test certificates, so it can't quote a number. The fabrics are upholstery grade, hold up well to daily use and draw rare durability complaints. For the heaviest use the outdoor fabrics are the toughest; velvet and the soft fabrics also wear well.

**A common question:** Does a window seat cushion with a notch or cut-out cost more than a plain rectangle?

**The workshop's answer:** No. A notched cushion of 109 1/4 x 25 in (about 277 x 64 cm), 4 in (10 cm) thick, was priced the same as the rectangle. The buyer ordered the rectangle size and wrote in the personalization box that a custom drawing had been sent.

| Setting | Oak box seat and casement, warm gray walls, braided jute rug |
| Best for | An indoor reading nook where one pattern carries the room |

> **Tailor's margin:** Front-to-back stripes make a long, narrow window seat cushion look deeper, and asking for them in the order note costs nothing.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which way should the stripes run on a long window seat cushion?

Front to back makes a long, narrow seat look deeper, as on this oak window seat. Side-to-side stripes stretch the length instead. Say which way you want them in your order note so the cloth is laid that way.

### Why does this striped window seat cushion use self piping?

A contrast cord would draw a line around the seat and interrupt the stripe at the edge. Self piping cut from the same navy and white cloth keeps the edge defined while the front face stays quiet against the oak.

### What happens when a window seat cushion is too thick for its box?

It buckles. In one rushed order, a cushion meant to be 2 in (5 cm) arrived at 4 in (10 cm), and forcing it into the frame made the corners and middle buckle. Thickness has to match the frame, or the cushion wears faster.

### Can a cotton stripe cushion go outside on a porch?

The workshop steers buyers away from cotton ticking outdoors, because 100% cotton is not suited to outdoor use, and points them to its outdoor linen-look fabrics instead. Keep cotton stripes on indoor seats like this reading nook.
