# A navy velvet lumbar pillow, two fuchsia shams and the evening light

*Fuchsia is a loud guest and navy is the host who keeps the evening calm. Three velvet questions come first, then the bed, layer by layer.*

> **The quick answer:** A lumbar pillow works best as the lowest, longest layer on a bed, set in front of the squares and shams so the stack steps down toward you. Here a navy velvet lumbar with a flat knife edge anchors two fuchsia velvet shams. Velvet changes tone with the direction of its pile, so judge any velvet color in daylight.

## Three velvet questions, before the reading

**A common question:** If I change my mind about the color later, can I get a second set of covers for the cushions you made?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop keeps your exact sizes, so a second set in another color can be made later through a private link, at about half the price of the full cushions. When a buyer found a fabric too dark, replacement covers were priced close to cost.

**A common question:** Can the quilted sofa topper be reversible in two colors, and do you make it in velvet?

**The workshop's answer:** It is reversible, and each side can be a different color, for example darker on top and lighter underneath; write both in the personalization box. It also comes in velvet, in sizes such as 20 x 63 in (51 x 160 cm) and 20 x 50 in (51 x 127 cm).

**A common question:** My cover arrived looking brown, not the olive I expected. What can I do?

**The workshop's answer:** Color shifts with lighting, camera and screen, and velvet shows different tones depending on which way the pile lies. Send a clear daylight photo. The workshop checks the fabric codes on your order, and in this case it remade the cover in a new color of the buyer's choice.

## Prussian navy, hot fuchsia, a wall of paled ink

Look at the wall first, my friends. That dusty blue is navy with white folded in, so the bed and its backdrop are cousins. The white headboard and cream linen stay quiet, and a wooden sunburst above repeats the sun at the window.

Fuchsia is a color that shouts, so it goes only on the two outer euro shams. It frames the bed; it never takes the center. The center belongs to navy, a velvet so deep it reads almost as shadow. Let one color speak and the others listen.

The low evening sun rakes in from the left and catches the crush marks in the pile of the [lumbar pillow](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/lumbar-pillows/). Velvet does that, shifting from ink to near black as the nap turns. [Velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) rewards light from the side.

## Where the light lands

Five points on the bed, from the bright frame to the dark center.

1. **Navy velvet lumbar**: Low sun shows the crush marks in the pile, giving the deep navy movement.
2. **Navy square**: A navy square behind the lumbar makes the dark color the center of gravity.
3. **Fuchsia sham left**: Fuchsia is kept to the outer shams so the brightest color frames rather than dominates.
4. **Fuchsia sham right**: The second fuchsia sham completes a symmetrical bright frame.
5. **Dusty blue wall**: The wall is a paled navy, so bed and backdrop feel related.

## The proportions: tall at the back, low at the front

Read the stack as steps. The euro shams stand tallest against the headboard, the navy square sits in front of them, and the lumbar lies lowest and longest. Nothing hides, and the bed still looks like a place to sleep.

The lumbar has a flat knife edge with no piping, so it lies slim and never pushes you forward. In the real order below, the seats were 4.5 in (11.5 cm) thick and the backs 3.5 in (9 cm), and a back cushion takes about 3 in (7.5 cm) off the usable depth of a seat.

How deep is the sofa or bed you are dressing? Measure that first, then choose the layers. The [pillow cover studio](https://cushionguide.com/studio/pillow-cover-studio/) lets you try sizes before you order.

## Six brown velvet covers for inserts that were still good

A buyer in the US ordered three velvet samples: a brown, a dusty mauve and a mustard. In their own room the brown won, a warm cocoa in daylight. They wanted six sofa cushions: three seats at 23 x 24 x 4.5 in and three backs at 23 x 20 x 3.5 in, zippers on the 23 in side.

With new foam, the quote ran well past their budget. Then they mentioned the inserts were still good. The workshop switched the order to covers only and priced the six together. The budget held.

> **Tailor's margin:** Hold a velvet swatch at a window in daylight, then under your bedside lamp. If the color holds in both lights, order it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a lumbar pillow need piping?

No. Piping is optional and the price is the same either way. The navy lumbar here has a plain knife edge, which keeps velvet soft and lets the pile carry the shine; piping gives a crisper, more tailored bed.

### Why does a navy velvet pillow change shade as you walk past it?

Velvet pile lies in one direction. Looking along it, the fabric reflects more light and reads paler; looking against it, the color deepens. Pressure marks and shading are normal velvet behavior, not defects.

### What should I measure to order covers for inserts I already have?

Measure the insert seam to seam while relaxed, write its true thickness instead of rounding, and say whether it is foam, fiber or a mattress. Covers are cut to sit snugly over the insert you describe.
