# A letter on a navy striped garden bench cushion and a cover made twice

*I write letters about the projects that taught me something. This one started with a bench that had wood where no cushion wanted to go, and ended with a cover sewn twice.*

> **The quick answer:** A garden bench cushion stays put when it fits snugly between the arms: measure between the arms at seat level and from the back slats to the front rail, and ask for a tight fit. Navy stripes running front to back stay centered on any bench length. A bench with protruding wood needs a custom shape ordered from photos.

## A letter from the bench in the roses

Friend,

You sent me this photo and asked why the bench looks so right. Here is what I see.

A weathered teak bench, gone silver, on a flagstone terrace. Roses in pink, peach and yellow, lavender and delphiniums, a stone urn of hydrangea, and a honey-stone house behind. Every one of those colors is soft. The navy and white awning stripe is the only hard note, so the bench reads from across the lawn. Honey stone and silver teak are warm grays, and navy cuts through both cleanly.

The stripes run front to back. That is the usual choice on benches, because the pattern stays centered whatever the length. Self piping keeps the edge in the same cloth.

Now look at the arms. The cushion sits inside them with almost no gap, and that is the whole anti-slide system. Someone sits down at one end, and the cushion has nowhere to go. For a bench like this, measure between the arms at seat level and from the back slats to the front rail, and ask for a snug fit. What does yours measure between the arms?

Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything. The outdoor fabric is woven with water-repellent and UV/fade-resistant finishes, and it still wants a dry winter indoors. The cloth is in [outdoor acrylic and solution-dyed](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), winter habits in [outdoor cushion care](https://cushionguide.com/guides/outdoor-cushion-care-winter-storage/), and more frames in the [bench cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/).

## Pinned by Callum: five marks on the terrace

Five pins: the awning stripe, the teak arm, the planted urn, the roses in front and the stone house behind.

1. **Navy awning-stripe cushion**: Wide stripes run front to back, so the pattern stays centered whatever the bench length.
2. **Teak bench arm**: The cushion fits snugly inside the arms, which stops it sliding.
3. **Planted stone urn**: A formal urn beside the bench frames it like a garden folly.
4. **Roses in the foreground**: Soft pinks and apricots make the navy stripe the strongest note in the frame.
5. **Honey-stone manor house**: Honey stone and silver teak are warm grays that navy cuts through cleanly.

## The mudroom bench with wood in the way

The project I keep thinking about wasn't in a garden at all. A buyer wanted one cushion, a single neutral color and no velvet, for a green painted bench in a [mudroom](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/).

The question was color. The workshop suggested warm neutrals and sent three codes. The buyer chose one from the soft performance range, because it washes easily.

The choice was shape. The bench had wood sticking out at the ends, so a plain rectangle would never sit right. The order went through the custom-shape route with the buyer's own photos uploaded, and the cushion was cut around the wood. That kind of cut is explained in [notched cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/notched-cushion-cutouts-posts-casings/), and keeping any bench cushion from sliding in [ties, non-slip bases and hook-and-loop tape](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/).

The result took longer than planned. At the final quality check a small defect showed up, and the cover was remade before it shipped. The buyer thanked the workshop for the honesty, delay and all. A cover remade is better than a flawed one shipped fast.

## What carries over to a garden bench

1. Ask for neutral options by code, then choose from real close-ups, not a screen.
2. Pick the fabric for the life it will lead: washable indoors, outdoor fabric outside.
3. Send photos with measurements when the frame is anything but a plain rectangle.
4. Ask for a snug fit between the arms; the gap is where sliding starts.

## Buyer questions: a lighter shade, a grippy base, angled ends

**A common question:** My cushion looks lighter than the swatch I picked. Did you use the wrong color?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop checks your photos first, because daylight can make the top of a cushion look lighter than its shaded sides. If the code is right, it may still remake the cover as a goodwill gesture if you pay the shipping, and it sends close-ups of the neighboring shades so you can choose between them.

**A common question:** Can the cushion for my entryway bench have a non-slip bottom?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, an anti-slip underside can be added. One 57 5/8 x 15 3/8 in (146.5 x 39 cm) entry bench cushion in velvet was quoted with a non-slip base.

**A common question:** I don't want a plain rectangle. Can a window seat cushion have angled ends?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the measurement of every side and photos of the seat, taken in daylight if you'd like help matching colors. One angled window seat took 7 to 9 days to make, and delivery on that order took another 2 to 4 days.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why do stripes on a bench cushion usually run front to back?

So the pattern stays centered whatever the bench length. The roll is also only about 55 in (140 cm) wide, so long cushions are cut with the stripes running across by default. Stripes are pattern-matched on one face only.

### Can a garden bench cushion stay outside all year?

Better not. The outdoor fabric has water-repellent and UV/fade-resistant finishes, but the workshop still advises storing cushions indoors in the off-season, and a fabric protectant spray is recommended between seasons.

### Does outdoor fabric feel stiff on a garden bench?

It is less soft than velvet and firmer than most indoor upholstery, closer to a good lounger cushion than to a sofa. It also works indoors, which makes it worth considering for a mudroom bench that meets wet boots.
