# A navy pinstripe bolster pillow, and why its piping is cut from the stripe

*Harlan stands before one bolster the way he'd stand before a museum plate, and talks about the ring of cord you almost can't see.*

> **The quick answer:** Stripe-cut self piping is the best choice for a pinstripe bolster pillow, because a solid welt would draw a hard ring around the end cap and fight the fine lines. On this cream bouclé daybed the ivory and navy stripe runs lengthwise, crossing the vertical channels of the tufted back, and thin black metal legs repeat the navy at floor level.

## Pinned by Harlan: five marks on the bolster and daybed

Five pins, from the pinstripe end cap to the black metal leg that answers it at the floor.

1. **Pinstripe end cap**: Fine navy lines on ivory give the only crisp graphic in a room of soft loops.
2. **Stripe-cut piping**: Piping cut from the same pinstripe frames the cap without adding a solid line.
3. **Channel-tufted back**: Vertical channels cross the bolster's lengthwise stripes at right angles, making a quiet grid.
4. **Boucle seat**: A flat cotton weave reads sharper against looped boucle than another textured cloth would.
5. **Black metal leg**: The thin dark leg picks up the navy of the stripe at floor level.

## Self piping on a bolster end: the ring that isn't there

Stand back from this bolster and you notice the stripe. Step closer and you notice something harder to see: the end cap has no solid ring around it. The piping is there, but it's cut from the same pinstripe, so it frames the cap without drawing a line.

That matters on a daybed like this one. Everything else in the frame is soft: cream bouclé loops on the seat, deep vertical channels on the back, window light washing over all of it. The pinstripe is the only crisp graphic in the picture, and it stays inside the same cream palette. A navy welt would have turned each end into a target.

Look at the direction, too. The stripes run the length of the bolster and the channels on the back run up and down. The two cross at right angles and make a quiet grid, the kind you feel before you see it. Even the thin black legs play along, picking up the navy down by the floor.

A flat cotton weave reads sharper against looped bouclé than another nubby cloth would. That's the idea worth copying, my friend: on a textured sofa, add definition with a flat stripe and leave the color story alone. A seam is a promise, and on a pinstripe it's a promise to line up. More rolls like this live among our [bolster pillows](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bolster-pillows/), and the cloth sits with [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/).

What's the softest surface in your living room, and what one crisp line could sit on it?

## Three ways to finish a bolster end

| Finish | At the end cap | Beside bouclé |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe-cut self piping | Frames the cap with no hard ring | Crisp but quiet; the choice here |
| Solid navy welt | A dark circle at each end | Pulls the eye to the ends, away from the stripe |
| No piping | Softest seam, less defined cap edge | Fine on plain cloth; a stripe can look unfinished |

## Covers that were right, fillings that weren't

A buyer ordered covers only, to go over inserts she already owned for a floor sofa. The seat covers went on like a glove. The L-shaped backrest covers looked a couple of inches too big.

The workshop checked. The covers matched their listed size, 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm); her fillings were the wrong height. The workshop offered to make matching fillings at cost, or to take the covers back with the return shipping at her expense.

Nobody did anything wrong on purpose. But a tape measure run over the height of each insert, not just its length and width, would have caught it before the box was ever packed. Our [covers for existing foam Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) walks through that check, and the [bolster sizing Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bolster-pillow-size-diameter/) does the same for rolls.

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** I have a teddy-style sofa from another company. Would your covers-only set fit it?

**The workshop's answer:** A covers-only set has two seat covers of 78 x 39 x 6 1/2 in (200 x 100 x 17 cm) and two L-shaped backrest covers of 39 x 39 x 15 in (100 x 100 x 39 cm). Teddy-style sofas usually run to this size, but measure yours against these numbers before ordering.

**A common question:** If you make pillows to match my bench cushions, will piping on both look too busy?

**The workshop's answer:** Pillows are made in the same fabric so the set is coordinated; send the pillow sizes with your cushion measurements and it's all quoted together. Piping on both won't look busy if it stays in the same tone family. It ties the set together.

**A common question:** What are the little pillows that came with my sofa, and what insert fits them?

**The workshop's answer:** They're a free gift, and their color may not match the sofa you chose; extra pillowcases can be bought. The covers are 14 x 14 in (36 x 36 cm), so a 14 x 14 in insert fits.

## On the cutting table: the pinstripe bolster

| | |
|---|---|
| Pillow | Bolster with rolled edge and flat end caps |
| Fabric | Ivory and navy pinstripe cotton, code N06 |
| Piping | Self piping cut from the stripe |
| Stripe direction | Lengthwise, crossing the daybed's vertical channels |
| Setting | Cream channel-tufted bouclé daybed on black metal legs |
| Sizing | Made to your diameter x length |
| Best for | Daybeds and textured sofas that need one crisp line |

> **Tailor's margin:** Before buying covers for inserts you already own, measure each insert's height as well as its length and width. Backrest covers show the difference first.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What piping suits a striped bolster pillow?

Piping cut from the same stripe. It finishes the end cap without adding a solid ring, so the fine lines stay the only graphic. A contrast welt tends to suit a plain bolster better than a patterned one.

### Does a striped bolster work on a bouclé daybed?

Yes, it's one of the easiest pairings. A flat cotton weave reads sharp against looped bouclé, so a pinstripe adds definition without changing a cream palette. Run the stripe lengthwise to cross vertical channels on the back.

### How is a bolster pillow measured for a custom order?

By diameter and length. Measure the length of the space it will fill, arm to arm or across the daybed back, then choose a diameter that suits the seat depth and the look you want.
