# A navy leaf jacquard bench cushion that turns a backyard storage box into a boot seat

*Callum reads a navy-on-white leaf weave cut to a resin box lid for the hand of the cloth: how it feels under wet jeans, how it wears, how it cleans.*

> **The quick answer:** A cushion cut to the lid of a backyard storage box turns it into a seat for pulling boots on and off, as long as it stays thin enough for the lid to open on its hinge. This one is a navy and white leaf jacquard. The pattern is woven into the cloth, so it wears with the fabric instead of rubbing off the surface.

## The hand of a jacquard by the back door

The hardest-working seat in a backyard is often a plastic box by the back door. Muddy boots come off on it. Grocery bags land on it. Somebody sits there in wet jeans to tie a lace.

The cushion here is a [jacquard](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/), navy leaves on white. In a jacquard the pattern is woven into the cloth, not printed on its face. Run a hand across one like this and the leaves come up as a slight relief, a dry hand with a little tooth. On a seat like this that matters. A woven pattern wears along with the fabric instead of rubbing off in the one spot where everyone sits.

Cleaning is the honest part. A raised weave holds grit. Brush it off dry first, then spot clean. And ask whether the weave you pick is rated for outdoor use. If it isn't, treat it like [indoor cushions on a covered porch](https://cushionguide.com/guides/indoor-cushions-covered-porch/): fine under a roof, indoors when weather is coming. Bring them in before the first frost and they'll forgive you everything.

## Pinned by Callum: a back door, a box and a pair of boots

Five pins, from the cushion on the box lid to the watering can that keeps the palette cool.

1. **Cushion on box lid**: Cut to the exact lid size, the cushion turns a garden storage box into a seat.
2. **Wellies on the mat**: Green wellies beside the door show the job: a seat for pulling boots on and off.
3. **Lavender in a tub**: Lavender picks up the blue-violet of the leaf print.
4. **Galvanised watering can**: Gray metal props echo the wood-effect slats and keep the palette cool.
5. **Wood-effect slats**: Navy leaves on white lift the gray-brown box so it no longer looks like plain storage.

## Why lavender, gray metal and green rubber boots

The box is gray wood-effect resin, the kind sold for yard tools and cushions. On its own it reads as storage. The cushion is cut to the exact size of the lid, with a box edge and self piping, and it turns the box into a bench. This is a [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) doing the job of an [entryway bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/), only outside.

Navy leaves pick up the blue-violet of the lavender in galvanized tubs. A galvanized watering can and the gray slats keep the rest cool. The coir doormat is the one warm note, and the green rubber boots beside it tell you what the seat is for: boots on, boots off.

One rule for this kind of seat, friend. Measure the lid, not the base of the box, and keep the cushion thin enough that the lid still opens on its hinge. The Pattern on [storage bench cushions and the hinge](https://cushionguide.com/guides/storage-bench-cushion-hinged-lid/) goes deeper. What do you keep in yours?

## A curved willow sofa: base first, back later

A buyer in the US had a curved willow sofa and wanted tufted [French cushions](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#french-mattress-cushion) for it: a rectangular base now and a semicircular back later. She asked for natural fiber and chose linen in color 14 with a silicone fill. The base measured 68 in along the back, 63 in along the front and 32 in deep (173, 160 and 81 cm), with curved ends, and she chose 4 in thick over 6 in.

She loved it. So did her cats. She came back for a second one in linen color 1 and mailed the compression bag back to be used again.

The lesson carries to any shaped seat, box lids included: make the base first, then measure the back once the base is in place. The hand of the cloth counted too. She picked linen for how it feels, and the choice held.

## Buyer questions: corners, double piping and backs on their own

**A common question:** Can you make a corner floor cushion with backrests for a corner 66 in across with 44 in sides?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Before cutting, the workshop checks whether those numbers are wall measurements, and whether the 14 in height runs from the floor to the top of the backrest. Then you pick a color number on the custom listing.

**A common question:** Can the bench cushions have double piping in a contrasting velvet, with throw pillow covers to match?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Bench cushions of 104 x 18 in and 59 x 18 in (264 x 46 cm and 150 x 46 cm) were made in emerald velvet with double piping in pale pink velvet, and the workshop added four matching 18 x 18 in throw pillow covers with the same piping at no charge.

**A common question:** Do you make back cushions on their own?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Back cushions are made separately, to any size and in any color you choose.

> **Tailor's margin:** A jacquard's pattern is woven in, so it wears with the cloth. Brush grit off dry before any spot cleaning.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is jacquard a good fabric for a seat near the back door?

It wears well because the pattern is woven in, and the raised weave hides small marks. It does hold grit, so brush it off dry before spot cleaning, and check whether the weave is rated for outdoor use.

### How thick should a cushion on a storage box lid be?

Thin enough that the lid still opens fully on its hinge. Measure the lid itself, not the base of the box, and check the clearance behind the hinge before choosing a thickness.

### Can a cushion on a backyard storage box stay outside all season?

Only if the fabric and foam are made for it. An indoor-weight weave belongs under a roof, and indoors when rain or frost is coming. For a seat left out in all weather, choose an outdoor fabric.

### Why order the base of a curved sofa before its back cushion?

The base changes the shape and height of the space left for the back. One buyer ordered the base for a curved willow sofa first, then measured for the semicircular back once the base was in place.
