# A navy corduroy window seat cushion, from the July sun patch to January

*Rosa reads a sunlit nook from above: navy corduroy edge to edge on a pine base, and how the same seat behaves through a year of weather.*

> **The quick answer:** A navy corduroy window seat cushion changes with the seasons: summer sun is the main risk, so turn and flip it now and then to fade evenly, while in winter the raised pile feels warm beside cold glass. Photographed from above, a good fit covers the seat top edge to edge, with no bare wood strip and no overhang.

## Pinned by Rosa: the navy window seat from above

These pins were set from the top of a stepladder, so the fit comes first and the patch of sun on the mustard rug comes last.

1. **Edge-to-edge fit**: From above you can check there is no bare wood strip and no overhang.
2. **Paneled end**: The cushion stops cleanly at the end panel, square to the wall.
3. **Pendant height**: Set the shade high enough to stand up under it from the seat.
4. **Side table**: Books and a vase live beside the seat, not on it.
5. **Sun patch on rug**: A sunny window is where a dense pile earns its keep.

## A navy corduroy window seat, seen from the stepladder

Somebody climbed up high to take this picture, and bless them for it. Pull up a chair, neighbor, because an overhead view is the honest way to judge a window seat cushion.

From up here you see the whole top: navy corduroy running edge to edge across a paneled pine base, no bare wood at the front, no lip hanging over the ends. The cushion stops square at the end panel. The pine paneling shows only on the front face, where it belongs.

The rest of the nook is summer on purpose. A mustard curtain and a mustard shag rug warm up the deep navy. Floral wallpaper keeps it cheerful. A rattan dome pendant hangs high enough to stand up under it from the seat. A rubber plant in terracotta and a round wooden side table with books and a bud vase stand beside the seat, not on it, so the full length stays free for sitting.

Navy corduroy earns its place in a sunny window for one plain reason: a raised pile hides sitting marks better than a flat weave. See the [corduroy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), the [window seat cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) and the note on [window seats fading in the sun](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/). How many hours of sun does your seat get in July?

## The same seat, four seasons

1. Summer: the sun patch slides across the rug and onto the seat. Turn and flip the cushion now and then so the navy fades evenly, not in one band.
2. Fall: pull the side table closer and lay a throw at one end. Corduroy's pile feels warm before the heat comes on.
3. Winter: a window seat sits against the coldest glass in the house. A box cushion keeps you off the chilly ledge, and navy looks deep in low light.
4. Spring: vacuum along the wale, brush the pile back up where people sit most, and check the cushion still lies square to the end panel.

## An L-shaped kitchen bench and a wedge of foam

A buyer in the US had an L-shaped kitchen bench, one run 84 x 22 in (213 x 56 cm) and the other 62.5 x 21.5 in (159 x 55 cm). She wanted sage green corduroy, 4 in (10 cm) thick, with a back cushion on the long side only.

The shop offered a pillow-style back or a foam back, and she picked foam. Then came the clever part: the workshop proposed cutting that foam as a wedge, so it leans against the wall and stays there without hook-and-loop tape.

Same fabric family as this nook, a very different room, and the lesson carries to any window seat with a wall behind it. More in the [L-shaped cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/l-shaped-cushions/) and in [shredded foam versus wedge backs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/back-cushion-fill-shredded-foam-vs-wedge/).

## On the cutting table: the sunny nook seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat cushion, rectangle |
| Fabric | Corduroy, navy to midnight blue |
| Edge | Box |
| Piping | Self |
| Fit | Edge to edge on the seat top, no overhang |
| Sun care | Turn and flip now and then to fade evenly |
| Back option | Wedge-cut foam that stays against the wall |
| Best for | Sunny nooks, mid-century and boho rooms |

## Questions from other window seats

**A common question:** Can you make T-shaped window seat cushions that fit around columns?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop would not sew T shapes. Instead it drew a plan that split three T-shaped seats into 6 simpler pieces. A contrasting fabric on the front edges could be added at no extra cost.

**A common question:** Can the piping pick up one of the colors in my striped fabric?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes: on one outdoor bench the piping matched the gray stripe. When the stripes are too thin to cut a solid strip, the shop picks the closest solid from another chart, such as a linen piping for a striped cloth, compared under natural light in the workshop.

**A common question:** Can you put ties on a small bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. A 14 x 18 in (36 x 46 cm) cushion for an oddly shaped bench was quoted with ties on the wider side.

> On a sunny window seat, a navy corduroy cushion should be turned and flipped now and then so the pile fades evenly instead of in one band.

> **Tailor's margin:** A wedge-cut foam back leans on the wall and stays put without hook-and-loop tape. Ask for one on any seat with a wall behind it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How can a photo show whether a window seat cushion really fits?

Take the picture from above. A good fit covers the seat top edge to edge, with no bare wood strip at the front and no overhang at the ends or over the front face.

### Will navy corduroy fade on a sunny window seat?

Any dyed fabric in strong daily sun can fade over time. Turning and flipping the cushion now and then spreads the exposure so it fades evenly, and drawing a curtain at midday helps too.

### Why does corduroy hide sitting marks better than a flat weave?

Its raised pile breaks up light, so small dents and creases don't show as sharp shadows. Brushing the pile back up where people sit most keeps the surface looking even.

### How high should a pendant hang above a window seat?

High enough to stand up from the seat without touching the shade. Measure from the top of the cushion, not the floor, because the seat lifts you before you stand.
