# A letter about a navy corduroy lumbar pillow and the measurements that matter

*Written from the cutting table to anyone ordering pillows for a bed: the ribs, the light, and the one measurement no tape can take, which is color.*

> **The quick answer:** A navy corduroy lumbar pillow reads best angled slightly on the bed, where fine-wale ribs catch raking light. Before ordering, measure the pillow you are covering, check the color on a daylight swatch rather than a screen, and know that tufted covers cannot be made for an existing cushion. Screens and daylight can shift a color by 5-10%.

## A letter from the cutting table, about ribs and light

My friends,

The measurement people get wrong most often on a bed is not a length. It is a color.

Let me begin with the photograph on my table. A [lumbar pillow](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/lumbar-pillows/) in ink navy fine-wale corduroy lies across cream linen, with a matching navy square rising just behind it, a little off its center. Knife edge, no piping. The ribs already draw their own lines; a welt would only argue with them. The camera sits at an angle, so raking light runs along the wale and you can see the pillow's depth along its front.

Behind it stand a honey oak headboard and white beadboard. Those vertical grooves repeat the corduroy ribs at the scale of a wall, which is why the pairing feels inevitable. Navy against cream and white could turn cold. The oak and a brass sconce with a white shade warm it. On the oak nightstand, a small brass candlestick on a stack of books repeats the sconce metal at pillow height.

Now, the measuring. For a cover over a pillow you already own, measure that pillow, not the one in a photograph. If yours is tufted, know this before you write: tufting goes through the filling, so a tufted cover cannot be made on its own. A plain cover can, with piping if you like. The Pattern on [covers for existing cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) walks through the rest, and [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) has its own page for the wale.

What color is your headboard in the morning, and what color is it at night?

## Pinned by Élodie

Five pins, from the corduroy ribs in raking light to the beadboard grooves that echo them.

1. **Navy corduroy lumbar**: Seen at 45 degrees, the fine ribs catch raking light and the lumbar's depth shows along its front.
2. **Navy square**: The square sits slightly off the lumbar's center so the stack avoids a stiff, lined-up look.
3. **Brass shaded sconce**: Brass and a white shade warm the crisp navy-and-white contrast.
4. **Books and candlestick**: A small brass candlestick on books repeats the sconce metal at nightstand height.
5. **White beadboard**: Vertical grooves echo the corduroy ribs on a much larger scale.

## The brown that arrived darker than the screen

A buyer in the US ordered corduroy covers in brown for a floor sofa and wrote back unhappy. The brown was much darker than it had looked online.

The workshop explained the honest part first: color can vary 5-10% between daylight and screens. When the buyer pushed back, it sent a replacement set in anthracite at no charge. The buyer confirmed it arrived and was delighted.

Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. Browns and grays swing the most, so ask for a swatch and hold it at your own window before you commit. The Pattern on [screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) explains why.

## Where people go wrong ordering pillows for a bed

- ✗ Measuring the pillow in the photograph instead of the insert they own.
- ✗ Asking for a tufted cover to slip over an existing tufted cushion.
- ✗ Judging brown or gray corduroy on a phone screen at night.
- ✗ Expecting gift pillowcases to arrive with inserts; they come empty.
- ✗ Centering the square exactly on the lumbar, which looks stiff.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Pieces | Lumbar pillow and a matching square |
| Fabric | Navy fine-wale corduroy |
| Edge | Knife edge, no piping |
| Placement | Angled slightly; square just off the lumbar's center |
| Cover for your own cushion | Plain only, piping optional; no tufted covers |
| Color check | Daylight swatch; screens can shift 5-10% |
| Room partners | Honey oak, white beadboard, brass sconce |
| Best for | Cream or white bedding on a wood bed |

## Buyer questions: covers, toppers and two surprise pillowcases

**A common question:** I already have a tufted cushion. Can you make just a matching tufted cover for it?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Tufting goes through the filling, so a tufted cover cannot be made on its own. The shop makes plain covers without tufting and can add piping. A cover for a 4 ft (122 cm) square bench seat would also be untufted.

**A common question:** Does the quilted sofa topper have a grip or anti-slip underside?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The topper is made to be used on both sides, so it has no anti-slip backing. It can be made to a custom size such as 25 x 82 in (64 x 208 cm), without handles or tassels.

**A common question:** Two square zippered covers came with my floor sofa. What are they for?

**The workshop's answer:** They are two pillowcases sent as a gift. They arrive without inserts, so you add your own.

> Brown and gray corduroy swing the most between a screen and a bedroom window. Color can shift 5-10% with daylight, so hold a swatch before you order.

> **Tailor's margin:** Angle a corduroy lumbar pillow a little toward the window. Fine-wale ribs only show their depth when light rakes across them.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a knife-edge navy lumbar need a welt around it?

Usually not. Fine-wale ribs already give the surface a line, and a knife edge keeps the pillow slim. Plain covers can take piping if you want the outline drawn, but on corduroy it often competes with the wale.

### Why can two panels of navy corduroy look like different colors?

Corduroy has a nap. Seen one way the ribs look lighter, the other way deeper. Every panel of a pillow should be cut in the same direction so the color reads evenly from the bed.

### How should a lumbar and a square pillow be stacked on a bed?

Set the lumbar in front of the shams and let the square rise just behind it, slightly off the lumbar's center. A perfectly centered stack looks stiff; a small offset looks lived in.
