# A navy corduroy corner floor cushion big enough for a mother and two toddlers

*Harlan writes about a nursery corner where corduroy ribs, cable knit and shaped pillows share one cushion, and about sizing a corner for everyone who will sit there.*

> **The quick answer:** A corner floor cushion in a nursery should be sized for the grown-up too: this navy corduroy one seats a parent cross-legged while one toddler dozes against the wall and another reads at the front edge. On dark corduroy, mix textures rather than loud prints; cream knit, a star pillow and a blush flower keep it soft.

## A letter about three people on one cushion

My friend,

The best measurement I ever saw of a corner floor cushion was not on a tape. It was three people on one seat. In this photograph a mother sits cross-legged on a navy corduroy corner cushion, one toddler dozes against the wall with a teddy, and the other holds a board book at the front edge. That answers the size question better than any number could.

Now look at how the patterns get along, because that is the harder craft. Corduroy is a stripe you feel before you see. Its wale runs in ribs, and on dark navy the ribs catch the quiet morning light as fine lines. So the cushion already carries a pattern. Put a loud print on top of it and the two argue.

Whoever dressed this corner knew that. Nothing on the seat is printed. The contrast comes from shape and texture instead: a cream star pillow, a blush flower pillow, a cream cable-knit baby blanket, a small teddy bear. Knit against wale, a plain star against ribbed cloth. Different hands, one gentle palette.

The patterns live on the walls, where they cannot quarrel with the cushion: a framed moon and stars print, an abstract arch print, a cream canopy strung with fairy lights. Cream turns up three times, blanket, star and canopy, and that is what keeps dark corduroy from feeling heavy in a child's room.

Look at the side, too. The gusset is deep, which keeps a small body off the floor and lets a grown-up stand up without a groan. The pillows are pushed right back into the corner, so the whole navy surface can be used.

My rule for mixing on corduroy: one ribbed ground, textures in one or two pale colors, prints on the wall. And measure the corner for everyone who will actually sit there. The shapes are in the [corner floor cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/), the cloth is on the [corduroy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), and more little corners wait in [kids' room cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kids-room-cushions/) and [playroom corner cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/playroom-corner-cushions/). Who sits in your corner on a slow morning?

## Pinned by Harlan

The pins mark the deep navy side, the nap spot by the wall, the grown-up's place, the toddler with a board book and the cream knit blanket.

1. **Thick navy corduroy side**: The gusset height keeps a napping child off the floor and makes getting up easy for an adult.
2. **Nap spot by the wall**: Pillows against the wall give a dozing toddler a sheltered side.
3. **Adult sitting cross-legged**: A grown-up fits beside the children, so plan the radius for adults too.
4. **Toddler with a board book**: Keeping the front of the seat clear gives children room to sit facing out.
5. **Cream knit blanket**: A pale blanket on navy is practical and the brightest spot in the frame.

## Buyer questions: rub counts, chrome frames and a wider module

**A common question:** Can I see the corduroy's Martindale rub count and any certification?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The workshop sends a PDF spec sheet with the fabric details, and the corduroy comes from OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified mills.

**A common question:** If I choose the brick color floor sofa, are the metal pieces chrome?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The frames are chrome-colored on every fabric color.

**A common question:** Can the single floor sofa be made 48 in wide instead of the standard width?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The single module is 39 in (99 cm) wide as standard, and a 48 in (122 cm) version can be made, but the L-shaped backrest will not fit a non-standard width.

## A floor sofa that came up short

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop after a pouf-style floor sofa arrived much flatter than the measurements on its listing. Floor pieces travel compressed, so the workshop asked them to give it 24 to 36 hours to expand. It still fell short.

The workshop offered two ways out: a partial refund and keep the sofa, or a full refund if it came back at the buyer's own shipping cost. They kept it and took the partial refund.

The lesson went up on the workshop wall: measure a compressed piece after it has fully recovered, before it ships, so the listing tells the truth. A seam is a promise, and so is a number on a page. What to expect in those first days is in the [vacuum-packed cushion pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/vacuum-packed-cushion-first-72-hours/).

> **Tailor's margin:** Size a corner floor cushion for the grown-up first. Children fit around an adult sitting cross-legged; the reverse never works.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How big should a corner floor cushion be for a parent and toddlers?

Big enough for the adult first. Children fit around a grown-up; the reverse is not true. Picture everyone sitting at once, cross-legged, dozing and reading, and size the radius to that rather than to the child alone.

### Can I mix patterns on a corduroy floor cushion?

Treat corduroy as a pattern already, because its wale reads as fine stripes. Add texture and shape in one or two pale colors, such as knit, a star or a flower pillow, and keep bold prints on the walls.

### Why does a floor sofa arrive thinner than listed?

Floor pieces travel compressed and need time to recover. Give one 24 to 36 hours after unpacking before you measure. If it still falls short of the listing, write to the maker with your measurements.

### Is navy corduroy too dark for a nursery?

Not with cream around it. Here a cream blanket, a cream star pillow and a cream canopy repeat the light tone three times, which softens the dark corduroy, and a deep navy hides the everyday marks small hands leave.
