# Anatomy of a navy bouclé window seat cushion on a sunny landing

*One dark cushion on a pale landing has to look right in August sun and February gloom. Pull up a chair and I'll show you how this one is built to do both.*

> **The quick answer:** A navy bouclé window seat cushion works all year on a sunny landing because its looped texture catches light in summer and looks warm in winter. Build it as a box cushion with self piping and a zippered cover, so it comes off for washing when the seasons turn. Anchor the dark seat with a rug border or sill flowers that repeat the navy.

## Top to floor, one layer at a time

Start at the top of this window seat cushion and work down, the way I'd take one apart on my bench. The cover is navy bouclé, a looped cloth that throws tiny shadows between its curls. That's why a dark seat in bright morning sun never reads as a flat block here.

Next comes the edge. It's a box cushion, square-shouldered, with self piping in the same navy. Navy against cream cupboards is already the strongest contrast in the picture, so a second color at the seam would be one voice too many. The self-piped front keeps the line crisp and quiet.

Then the proportion. The cushion top sits level with the window reveal, so your eye slides from seat to sill in one easy move. Below it, the cream shaker cupboards do the storing, and wide oak boards and a worn Persian runner hold the floor.

Every prop earns its spot. Three leather-bound books and a steaming stoneware mug sit at one end, leaving most of the seat free for sitting. A stoneware jug of wheat and blue cornflowers on the sill ties the navy to the window. The framed picture on the wall stays small and polite. And the runner's navy border is the anchor: without it, that dark seat would float on the landing all by itself.

## Pinned by Rosa: five spots on the landing

Five pins, from the cornflowers on the sill down to the navy border of an old Persian runner.

1. **Navy bouclé seat**: The deepest color in the set, so everything around it is kept quiet.
2. **Self-piped front**: Navy piping keeps the edge crisp without introducing a second color.
3. **Books and mug**: A short stack at one end leaves most of the seat free.
4. **Cornflowers on sill**: Their blue connects the navy cushion to the window.
5. **Persian runner**: The navy border in the rug stops the dark seat from floating on its own.

## What the year does to a dark seat

This photograph is a late-summer morning: wheat in the jug, cornflowers, sun pouring across the boards. Come January, the same landing goes gray by late afternoon, and that's when bouclé earns its keep. A looped cloth looks warm, and the steam off that mug tells you somebody lingers here on cold mornings.

The secret to a year-round window seat is changing the small things and leaving the cushion alone. Swap the sill flowers for evergreen cuttings or pine cones in winter, whatever your yard hands you, and keep one blue thing up there so the seat still has a partner. When spring cleaning comes, unzip the cover and wash it; every cushion is made with a zippered, removable cover for exactly that.

Sun is the one thing to plan for. If your seat takes hard light all summer long, read our notes on [window seat cushions and fading](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-fading-sun/) before you pick the deepest shade. Loops can snag, too, so the [bouclé care notes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/boucle-teddy-cushions-snags-care/) are worth five minutes, and more looped cloths wait in the [bouclé and teddy swatch library](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/).

So tell me, neighbor: which month does your window seat look saddest in?

## Two navy backrests and a daybed that wanted to be a sofa

A buyer in the US came to the workshop after an order somewhere else had gone wrong. They had a daybed, 75 x 38 in (190 x 97 cm), and wanted it to look like one of those deep, soft teddy sofas.

The shop laid out the math plainly. Each L-shaped backrest measures 39 x 39 in (99 x 99 cm), so two side by side cover 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm), close to the length of the daybed. The second backrest wasn't available at first. The shop made it available, and two went home in navy blue corduroy.

Different cloth from the bouclé on this landing, same deep navy, same good idea: backrest modules can turn almost any daybed of about that length into a lounge sofa. The how-to lives in [daybed back cushions for a sofa look](https://cushionguide.com/guides/daybed-back-cushions-sofa-look/), and more seats like this one are in our [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/).

## Buyer questions: zippers, angled ends and a torn cover

**A common question:** Does the window seat cushion come with a zipper so I can take the cover off and wash it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cushion is made with a zippered, removable cover so it can be washed, and cover-only orders are sent with zippers too.

**A common question:** One end of my seat is angled, under the stairs. Can you make that shape, or a trapezoid for a bay?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the size and a paper drawing that shows the angle, and the workshop copies the exact shape. It also checks whether a bay that looks like a trapezoid in a photo is really a rectangle seen from an angle.

**A common question:** A cover arrived with a hole in it. What happens now?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop sends a new cover or backrest. If you'd rather have a local tailor mend it, a partial refund can be offered instead.

> If a navy window seat cushion is the darkest thing on a landing, repeat its navy once in the rug border or the sill flowers so the seat stays anchored.

> **Tailor's margin:** Keep books and mugs to one end of a window seat cushion. A stack of three at the end leaves the rest of the seat free for sitting.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is bouclé a good fabric for a dark cushion in a sunny spot?

It's a strong choice for looks. The looped surface catches light and shadow, so a navy seat in bright sun never reads as a flat block. For very strong daily sun, read up on fading before choosing the deepest shade.

### Should a navy window seat cushion have white piping?

Not on cream cupboards. Navy on cream is already a strong contrast, so self piping in navy keeps the edge crisp without adding a second color. Save contrast piping for calmer fabrics where the outline needs help.

### How can a window seat look right in every season?

Leave the cushion alone and change the small things: flowers on the sill, a throw, the books on top. Keep one object that repeats the cushion color, such as blue cornflowers or a navy rug border, so the seat always has a partner.
