# A navy botanical window seat cushion turns a radiator into the warmest seat in the apartment

*Before: a cast-iron radiator and a cold draft under an old window. After: a shelf, a navy botanical cushion and a coffee cup. I talk it through the way buyers talk it through with the workshop, one round of questions at a time.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion over a radiator belongs on a shelf built above the radiator, never on the cast iron itself. Measure the shelf rather than the radiator, and leave a gap at the back so heat can still rise. A dark navy botanical print suits old moldings and hides the wear of a seat used every day.

## Three rounds of measuring for a 120-year-old corner

Every good window seat starts as a conversation, and this one took three rounds.

A buyer messaged the workshop about a corner window seat in a 120-year-old house: four seat pieces and two square pillows. One corner seat had to notch around a window column, with smaller notches where the trim overhung.

The workshop drew it all up before cutting, and the drawing wouldn't close. So it asked for fresh measurements and both diagonals. The overall run came to about 50.9 x 50.75 in (129 x 129 cm), with a diagonal of 71.125 in (181 cm). On the third round the buyer said it plainly: the inner corner wasn't a true right angle. They set the seat depths at 18.75 in (47.6 cm) and 19 in (48.3 cm), and with those numbers everything closed within 1/4 in (6 mm). The whole set, on 2 in (5 cm) foam, shipped together.

Old houses don't do right angles, neighbor. Measure both diagonals and let each depth follow the real walls.

## Pinned by Rosa: the radiator seat

Five pins, from the navy leaves on the seat to the woven basket that keeps the blanket off it.

1. **Navy botanical cushion**: A dark print suits the patina of old moldings and hides wear on a daily seat.
2. **Cast-iron radiator**: The seat shelf sits above it, turning dead space into a warm winter perch.
3. **Sage pillow**: Pulls the palest leaf color out of the print.
4. **Book and coffee**: Shows the seat is deep enough to hold a cup safely.
5. **Woven basket**: Blanket storage on the floor keeps the narrow seat clear.

## Before the shelf, and after the cushion

Picture this window a year earlier. A white cast-iron column radiator under the sill, a draft off the old glass, and a strip of herringbone parquet that everybody walked past. Dead space, and warm dead space at that.

Now look at it. A shelf runs over the radiator, and a navy botanical cushion turns it into the warmest seat in the apartment on a winter morning. The photo reads like Paris, but the same radiator sits under the same window in prewar apartments and brownstones all over the US; our sketch on [brownstone window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/brownstone-window-seat-cushions/) and the [New York City apartment](https://cushionguide.com/places/new-york-city-apartment-cushions/) page have more.

Why a dark print? Midnight navy suits the patina of old moldings, and it hides wear on a seat used every single day. The sage pillow pulls the palest leaf out of the print, and the ivory linen one picks up its white. A rubber plant in terracotta and a trailing pothos echo the fronds, so the room seems to grow out of the fabric. The open book and coffee cup tell you the seat is deep enough to hold a cup without a wobble.

## Radiator rules I'd tape inside the closet door

- ✓ Measure the shelf, not the radiator; the cushion is sized to what it sits on. Our Pattern on [measuring a window seat](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-window-seat-cushion/) covers the rest.
- ✓ Leave gaps along the back of the shelf so warm air can still rise into the room.
- ✓ Keep the cushion on the shelf, never straight on the cast iron.
- ✓ Mind the thickness. Standard is 4 in (10 cm); a shallow sill may want 2 or 3 in, written in your personalization note.
- ✓ Put a basket on the floor for the blanket, so the narrow seat stays clear for sitting.

## Buyer questions: what it costs, how thick, and will it wash

**A common question:** How do you price a custom bench or window seat cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** By size. Choose your size range on the listing and the price appears. Each piece in a set is priced on its own, and for odd sizes or trapezoids you can send your measurements for a personal quote; ask the workshop to put the shipping cost in that same reply.

**A common question:** Four inches is too thick for my shelf. Can you go thinner?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Standard is 4 in (10 cm), but orders have gone as thin as 1.5 in (4 cm) and as thick as 6 in (15 cm). Put the thickness you want in the personalization note when you order.

**A common question:** If the kids spill on it, can I unzip the cover and put it in the washer?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cover has a zipper and comes straight off; wash it in the machine at 86°F (30°C) or cooler. The same goes for the linen-look, corduroy, velvet and trapezoid cushions, and the price already covers the foam insert.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a window seat sit over a radiator?

Yes, when the cushion rests on a shelf built over the radiator rather than on the radiator itself. Leave gaps along the back of the shelf so warm air can rise, and size the cushion to the shelf.

### Why pick a dark print for a window seat used every day?

A dark ground like midnight navy hides wear, crumbs and small marks on a seat that gets daily use, and it suits the patina of old moldings. Pull lighter pillow colors from the print so the seat doesn't feel heavy.

### What pillows go with a navy botanical cushion?

Take them from the palest colors in the print. Here a sage pillow pulls out the lightest leaf and an ivory linen pillow echoes the white ground, so the seat looks planned rather than piled up.
