# A teal corduroy window seat cushion under an attic slope, and what goes inside it

*A letter from Rosa about a storage chest that became the best seat in the house, and why the filling matters as much as the fabric when the ceiling slopes.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion under a sloped attic ceiling should be a high-density foam insert in a zippered cover, kept thin enough that your head clears the slope when you lean back. Sit on the bare seat and measure head to ceiling first. The quilted French mattress style, filled with silicone balls, is puffier and softer, and builds more height.

The green repeats the garden beyond the glass.")

## A letter from the top of the attic stairs

Dear neighbor,

The best seat in this house started out as a storage chest nobody bought to sit on.

It stands under an attic window, below a pine ceiling that slopes down like a porch roof. Somebody laid a muted teal corduroy cushion on the lid, left a nature book on top, and the chest became a window seat. Pull up a chair, because before we talk color I want to talk about what's inside.

Under a slope, the filling decides if you can lean back at all. The chest sits just below the sill, and the cushion adds about a hand's depth, roughly 4 in (10 cm). Pile on more and your head meets the pine.

So the filling has to carry you without building height. A high-density foam insert in a zippered cover holds the thickness you ordered and keeps the box edge square; you can see the self piping running straight along the front. The quilted French mattress style is a softer animal, filled with silicone balls, puffier, closer to a little bed. I love it on a daybed. Under a sloped ceiling I reach for the foam.

Before you choose a thickness, sit on the bare chest, lean back, and have somebody measure from the top of your head to the slope. Whatever room is left is your budget. The Pattern on [window seat cushion thickness](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-thickness/) walks through the numbers.

## Pinned by Rosa

Five pins, from the teal wale on the lid to the pine slope you have to duck under.

1. **Muted teal corduroy**: A cool color stands out against all this orange-toned pine.
2. **Book left on the seat**: One book says what the seat is for better than a pile of pillows would.
3. **Sloping pine ceiling**: Check head height under the slope before you choose cushion thickness.
4. **Oak chest of drawers**: Warm oak beside a cream chest keeps the corner from looking fitted and cold.
5. **Garden view**: The teal borrows its color from the lawn and hedges outside.

## Teal against a room full of orange pine

Everything up here runs warm: pine tongue-and-groove on the ceiling, wide pine floorboards, an oak chest of drawers. A rust or mustard cushion would have melted right into the wood. Teal is the cool opposite, and it takes its color from the lawn and hedges outside the glass, so the seat looks like part of the view.

Corduroy earns its place in a bedroom. The wide wale catches cool late-afternoon light in soft lines and feels warm under bare legs. There's more of it in the [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) family, and more seats like this among our [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/).

The props are few, and each one works. One hardback book on the cushion says "reading seat" louder than six throw pillows would. A pilea and a snake plant in white pots add a second green. The oak drawers beside the cream chest keep the corner from looking fitted and cold. A photo frame and a small clock make it somebody's room, not a catalog page.

What's sitting under your window right now: a chest, a radiator cover, a bench with a lid? If it lifts, read our sketch on [storage bench and blanket chest cushions](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/storage-bench-and-blanket-chest-cushions/).

## Five window seats, a stack of samples, and one careful family

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a playroom with five window seats and a separate angled seat. They had fallen for a black ticking stripe trimmed in brown velvet. Before committing, they asked for photos of finished cushions in that ticking and in a second one with wider stripes. Then they ordered samples: both tickings, brown and black velvet, and two more fabrics.

With the swatches in hand, they asked for a quote on two angled cushions of 24 x 28 x 28 in (61 x 71 x 71 cm) in ticking with brown velvet piping, and five cushions of 24.5 x 40 in (62 x 102 cm) in another fabric. The angled pair was priced on the trapezoid listing.

I admire that family. A cotton ticking body with velvet piping works fine, but a stripe looks one way on a small swatch and another way across a 40 in (102 cm) seat. Look at stripe width on a finished cushion before you cut a yard.

## Buyer questions: one piece, two fillings, and swatches

**A common question:** My window seat is really long. Will you make the cushion in one piece, or split it in two?

**The workshop's answer:** For very long cushions, around 104 in (264 cm), the workshop may suggest two pieces. If you want no seam in the middle, just say so: a 104.5 x 18 in (265 x 46 cm) cushion has been made in one piece.

**A common question:** What's the difference between a regular foam cushion and the quilted French mattress style?

**The workshop's answer:** The foam version is a high-density foam insert inside a zippered cover. The quilted French mattress style is filled with silicone balls instead. The workshop asks which one you want before production starts.

**A common question:** I'm an interior designer. Can I get a sample to check color and feel, or a full swatch set for future projects?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Small samples go out before a custom order on request, and a designer was offered a complete swatch set of every color, so future orders can be chosen with the fabrics in hand.

| Measure first | Seated head height against the sloped ceiling |
| Best for | Attic, dormer and eaves window seats |

> If an attic room is all orange-toned pine, choose a cool cushion color like muted teal; a warm fabric simply disappears into the wood.

> **Tailor's margin:** Under a sloped ceiling, pick a high-density foam insert: it stays the thickness you ordered, so your head clearance stays honest.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a window seat cushion be under a sloped ceiling?

Only as thick as your head clearance allows. Sit on the bare seat, lean back, and measure from the top of your head to the slope. The chest in this photo takes about a hand's depth, roughly 4 in (10 cm).

### Is foam or silicone-ball fill better for a window seat?

A high-density foam insert holds its height and a crisp box edge, which suits seats with little headroom. Silicone-ball fill, used in the quilted French mattress style, is puffier and softer, closer to a small mattress.

### Does corduroy work on a bedroom window seat?

Yes. Wide-wale corduroy is soft and warm to sit on, and its ribs catch low light in gentle lines. The corduroy color range is smaller than velvet's, so order a sample if you are matching walls or bedding.
