# A mustard window seat cushion, read from the doorway and from arm's length

*Some details only show up when you lean in. Others carry across the whole room. The best window seats have one of each.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion reads well from across a room when it has one strong color and one thin contrast line, such as mustard with petrol blue piping. Take the piping color from the strongest color in your rug or curtains. Save fine texture, like a dotted chenille or a velvet welt, for the close-up view.

![Long mustard dotted chenille window seat cushion with petrol blue velvet piping on a cream storage bench, blue vintage rug](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/mustard-window-seat-cushion-petrol-blue-velvet-piping-1600.webp "Petrol blue piping pulls the color of the rug up to the seat, framing the mustard in a single dark line.")

## From the doorway: one color and one line

Pull up a chair, neighbor, but first stand in the doorway. That's where most people meet a window seat: ten feet away, with a coffee in one hand.

From there, this cushion is two things. A long block of mustard on a cream Shaker storage base, and a thin dark line around its edge. That's all the eye gets, and that's all it needs. Mustard and petrol blue sit nearly opposite each other on the color wheel, so a single welt of blue makes the mustard glow instead of adding a second big block of color.

The line wasn't picked out of the air. Look down. The faded blue vintage rug on the wide oak boards is where the petrol blue came from. Piping that repeats the rug ties floor and seat together, and from the doorway the room reads as one idea.

Everything else stays quiet on purpose. A stoneware jug of olive branches and wheat on the sill. A steaming mug on three old books. A casement window pouring in honeyed morning light. Neutral props let the two colors do the talking.

If you're planning your own, start with our [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/), and for textured dotted weaves like this one, the [jacquard and damask shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/). The [piping guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) helps you decide between matching and contrast. So, what's the strongest color on your floor?

## Pinned by Rosa: five stops between the rug and the sill

Five pins, from the long mustard seat and its petrol blue welt down to the faded rug that gave the piping its color.

1. **Mustard seat**: A long single cushion keeps the window seat calm and continuous.
2. **Petrol blue piping**: A thin line of the opposite color makes the mustard glow.
3. **Mug on old books**: A steaming mug says morning and gives scale.
4. **Olive and wheat jug**: Neutral stoneware keeps attention on the color pairing.
5. **Faded blue rug**: The rug's blue is where the piping color came from.

## Ten feet away versus ten inches away

| Detail | From the doorway | Up close |
|---|---|---|
| Mustard seat | One warm block along the window | A dotted chenille with soft texture |
| Petrol blue piping | A dark outline that sharpens the edge | Velvet sheen against matte chenille |
| Box edge | An even thickness from end to end | Square sides that hold the welt straight |
| Blue rug | The same blue as the piping, on the floor | Faded, worn pattern that softens the pair |
| Mug and books | A scale marker: this is a seat, not a shelf | A morning ritual, steam and all |

## An 81-inch angled window seat and the case for two cushions

A buyer measured an angled window seat with the shop's A-to-E diagram: A 24 in (61 cm), B 24 in (61 cm), C 81 1/8 in (206 cm), D 57 7/8 in (147 cm) and E 21 5/8 in (55 cm). They wanted self piping, the same fabric all the way around.

The shop suggested two cushions instead of one for an angled seat that long. Two pieces fit more snugly against the angles, look neater, and are easier to wash, because nobody has to wrestle one 81 in cover off the foam. It confirmed 32 DNS high-density foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³, with hidden zippers, and quoted a single piece as well.

I've seen the same thing on porch swings for years: the longest cushion is the one nobody wants to wash. For long angled seats, two trapezoids usually fit better than one. The [trapezoid cushion measurements guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/trapezoid-cushion-measurements/) shows how the letters map to the sides.

## Buyer questions: flip-side piping, backrests and very long trapezoids

**A common question:** Can each side of a cushion have a different piping color, so I can flip it for a new look?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Four linen-look cushions, each about 90 1/2 in (230 cm) long, 13 3/4 in (35 cm) deep and 3 in (7.6 cm) thick, were quoted with one piping color on one side and a different one on the other, so turning them over changes the look.

**A common question:** I'd like a pillow to lean on at the end of my window seat. How tall should the backrest be?

**The workshop's answer:** Backrests are usually made 16 in (41 cm) tall. Order two cushions from the listing, and the workshop makes one of them into the backrest, sized to the width of your seat.

**A common question:** Do you make trapezoid cushions to measure, even with a very long side?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send every side length, including the long side. For a trapezoid with an 89 in (226 cm) long side, the workshop asked whether two pieces would be acceptable, and quoted it as a single piece as well.

> **Tailor's margin:** Window seat piping: take the color from the strongest color in your rug or curtains, and a thin welt carries it up to the seat.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How do I choose a piping color for a window seat cushion?

Take it from the strongest color already in the room, usually the rug or the curtains. On a mustard cushion, petrol blue piping picked up from a faded blue rug ties floor and seat together and reads clearly from across the room.

### Does contrast piping show from across a room?

Yes, when the two colors sit far apart. Mustard and petrol blue are nearly opposite on the color wheel, so a thin welt reads as a crisp outline from ten feet away. Piping close to the body color fades into the edge at that distance.

### Should a long angled window seat be one cushion or two?

Two usually fit better. On an angled seat with an 81 in (206 cm) side, the workshop suggested two pieces because they sit more snugly against the angles, look neater and are easier to wash than one long cushion.
