# Mustard Velvet With Plum Piping: A Window Seat Cushion Worth the Money

*A letter from the porch about a sunny corner, a bold edge, and which parts of a window seat deserve the money.*

> **The quick answer:** On a velvet window seat cushion, spend on the fabric you touch every day and on ordering seat, backs and bolsters together so they share one dye lot. Save on thickness and shape: the standard 4 in (10 cm) suits most seats, 6 in (15 cm) costs a little more, and a plain rectangle costs far less than an odd shape.

## A letter about a sunny two-window corner

Dear neighbor,

Two windows, one corner, and a whole afternoon of sun landing on mustard velvet. It is the happiest [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) I've read in a while.

The [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) glows where the light runs along the pile. Plum piping traces every edge, and because purple and yellow sit across from each other on the color wheel, the line pops without picking a fight. The cream shaker bench and white trim give the pair room to breathe.

Look at how the seat is dressed. Two mustard backrests, piped in plum, lean on the wall under the right-hand window. Two mustard pillows with the same piping keep the set calm, since a bold edge needs a quiet body. The left end stays open on purpose: stacked hardbacks, a white mug on a coaster, a wooden plate on the sill. That end is the side table. An oatmeal throw folded over the right end softens the bench and cools all that yellow, and a jute rug keeps the floor casual. Which end of your window seat has quietly become the side table?

One warning I give every family: a warm velvet like this loves a sunny corner. In a north-facing room the same mustard can look flatter, so judge the swatch where the cushion will live.

Now, money. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and within a month they'll tell you where you should have spent it.

## Five pins in the afternoon sun

Five pins, from the plum edge to the oatmeal throw, show how a bold pairing stays calm in full sun.

1. **Plum piping on velvet**: Purple and yellow sit opposite on the color wheel, so the edge really pops.
2. **Velvet backrests**: Two backs lean on the wall below the right-hand window.
3. **Mustard pillow**: Pillows in the seat fabric keep the set calm despite the bold piping.
4. **Mug and books on the ledge**: The open left end becomes a side table for a drink.
5. **Throw over the end**: An oatmeal throw softens the bench's right end and cools the yellow.

## Where to spend and save on a window seat cushion

| Choice | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Velvet chosen by swatch number | Spend | You touch it every day, and a swatch shows the true color; a screen may not |
| Seat, backs and bolsters in one order | Spend | Pieces cut together share one dye lot |
| Standard 4 in (10 cm) thickness | Save | 6 in costs a little more; 7 in is a custom quote |
| Plain rectangle | Save | An odd shape costs far more and needs every side length plus a photo |
| One long run split into pieces | Save | Came out slightly cheaper than one long cushion |

## Dusty rose, color 11, and a set ordered all at once

One buyer wrote in wanting a soft velvet or chenille window seat, 25 x 63 in (64 x 160 cm), in dusty rose, at least 4 in thick, with matching 25 in bolsters. The workshop sent its velvet swatch card, and they chose color 11 with the real cloth in their hand.

The workshop recommended the full set, seat, backrest and bolsters, in the standard 4 in thickness. Production took 5 to 7 days and delivery 3 to 5.

Why all together? Because velvet cut from one run matches itself. Buy the seat now and the bolsters next spring, and you may end up with two dusty roses that don't quite agree. Choose by swatch number, not screen color, and order everything that must match in one go. The [dye lot Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/dye-lots-matching-cushions-later/) and our notes on [ordering swatches](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) say the same thing at more length.

## Buyer questions: splitting a long run, odd shapes and extra inches

**A common question:** Would one very long cushion cost less if you split it into three?

**The workshop's answer:** Slightly less, yes. A 140 x 16 in piped velvet cushion came out a little cheaper as three pieces: 36 x 17, 68 x 16.5 and 36 x 17 in.

**A common question:** Can you quote a rectangle and an odd-shaped trapezoid cushion, both in houndstooth?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The special shape cost considerably more than the rectangle; both were made with the workshop's best fabric and foam, with 10 days of processing. For the odd shape the workshop asked for every side length and a photo of the space.

**A common question:** Can you make bench cushions 6 or 7 inches thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. 6 in (15 cm) has been made for a small extra, paid through an additional payment link after the order. 7 in (18 cm) is quoted as a custom job; one set of two benches with two bolsters was quoted at both thicknesses.

## On the cutting table: the two-window corner

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Window seat cushion with two backrests |
| Fabric | Mustard yellow velvet |
| Piping | Plum contrast on every edge |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Pillows | Two mustard velvet, plum-piped |
| Base | Cream shaker storage bench between two windows |
| Standard thickness | 4 in (10 cm); 6 in (15 cm) costs a little more |
| Dye lot | Order seat, backs and bolsters together |
| Best for | Sunny corners and living-room reading spots |

> Order the window seat, backrests and bolsters in one go. Velvet cut together shares one dye lot; pieces bought a season apart may not agree.

> **Tailor's margin:** Stay at the standard 4 in thickness unless the seat truly needs height. 6 in (15 cm) costs a little more, and that money can buy better fabric.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does plum piping work on a mustard velvet cushion?

Plum and mustard sit opposite each other on the color wheel, so a plum welt gives every edge a strong, confident line. Keep the pillows in the seat fabric so the bold edge has a quiet body around it.

### Is a 6 inch velvet window seat cushion worth the extra cost?

Only if the seat needs the height. The workshop's standard is 4 in (10 cm), and 6 in (15 cm) costs a little more. A dusty rose window seat with a backrest and bolsters was recommended at the standard 4 in thickness.

### Will mustard velvet look the same in a north-facing room?

Probably not. Warm velvet glows along its pile in direct sun; in cooler north light the same mustard can look flatter. Hold the swatch in the actual corner at different times of day before deciding.
