# Mustard ticking chair cushion with ties, and the order note that gets it right

*Mustard, cream, oak, pine and terracotta. Five colors, one breakfast corner, and a porch swing story about what an unlabeled diagram can cost.*

> **The quick answer:** To order a chair cushion with ties that arrives right the first time, send the fabric code, a diagram with every dimension labeled, the tie position and the stripe direction in one message. On this oak ladder-back, fine mustard ticking, code N11, runs front to back with self piping and cream ties bowed at the back posts.

## Swatch strip: a mustard breakfast corner

- Mustard ticking stripe — #C9982F — Code N11. A thin colored line on a wide cream ground: pattern without weight.
- Cream ground and ties — #F1E9D6 — The ties match the ground, so the bows disappear into the stripe.
- Honey oak — #B58A58 — Table and chair share one wood, which keeps the corner calm.
- Whitewashed pine — #E6DFD2 — Bleached floorboards bounce morning light back up onto the seat.
- Terracotta — #B8653F — The tree's pot answers the mustard with a deeper warm.
- Jute — #B9A07A — Texture underfoot, close to the oak, adding no new color.

## Why the stripe runs front to back

Start with the stripe, because everything else follows from it. Narrow mustard lines run from the front of the seat to the back. On a fairly shallow ladder-back, that direction makes the seat look longer than it is. Turn the same fabric sideways and the chair would look wider and shorter.

The cushion is self-piped, so the ticking carries over the box edge with no break and the pad reads as one soft block. The ties are cream, the color of the ground, and bowed at the back posts. From the table you'd hardly see them. That's how a [chair cushion with ties](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) should behave: holding on without announcing it.

The props are Scandinavian basics: a round oak table, an open interiors magazine, a glass of water for sparkle, a young tree in terracotta, sheer linen curtains and a white column radiator. Nothing competes with the stripe, and the terracotta balances its warmth.

The order note is where a chair like this is won or lost. I'm a checklist woman, so before you press the button, make sure yours has:

- the fabric code, not just a color name
- a diagram with every dimension labeled: front, back and depth
- where the ties go, and whether they match or contrast
- which way the stripe runs

The [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) shelf and the [stripe direction guide](https://cushionguide.com/guides/striped-cushion-stripe-direction/) will settle that last one. How many chairs are you dressing?

## Pinned by Maggie: around the breakfast table

Five pins, from the cream tie bow at the back post to the young tree in its terracotta pot.

1. **Cream tie bow**: Pale ties bowed at the back post barely show against the striped fabric.
2. **Self-piped stripe edge**: Self piping lets the stripe carry round the edge with no break in the pattern.
3. **Open magazine**: Reading material on the table sets this as a slow breakfast spot.
4. **Glass of water**: Clear glass adds sparkle without adding color.
5. **Potted young tree**: Terracotta and green balance the warm mustard stripe.

## The back pillow that came up 23 inches short

A buyer in the US ordered a porch swing set: a seat pillow and a separate back pillow that sits on top of it. The back pillow arrived 23 in (58 cm) shorter than the seat. The shop had misread the measurement diagram.

I'll tell this straight, because that's the useful part. At first the shop stood by the approved schematic. Then it looked again, admitted the mistake, let the buyer keep the original, and remade the back pillow free of charge: 63 3/4 in (162 cm) long, 18 in (46 cm) deep and 3 in (7.6 cm) thick, with the stripes running top to bottom. The replacement fit perfectly and looked great on the patio.

Everybody got there in the end, but a labeled diagram gets there first. Write the number on every side, and say in words which way the stripes run. Measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have.

## Buyer questions: Danish chairs, matching sets and a flattened front

**A common question:** Can you make a trapezoid seat cushion and a rectangular back cushion for a Danish-style chair?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Order the seat on the trapezoid listing, for example 23 in (58 cm) at the front, 22 in (56 cm) at the back, 24 in (61 cm) deep and 4 in (10 cm) thick, non-tufted, with the zipper at the back. Order the back on the rectangle listing, 22 x 19 in (56 x 48 cm) and 3 in (7.6 cm) thick. Reversible cushions are made without a non-slip bottom.

**A common question:** Can you make chair cushions with ties in the same fabric as my bench cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Matching chair cushions with ties can be made in exactly the same fabric so everything coordinates. Send the sizes and mention the bench when you order, so the pieces are kept together.

**A common question:** My child jumps on the chair, and now the front of the cushion is squashed so the seat slants forward. Can I fix it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Take off the cover, pull and redistribute the filling back into shape, then put the cover back on.

> **Tailor's margin:** Chair cushion diagram: label every side with its number. One misread sketch once left a porch swing back pillow 23 in short.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which way should stripes run on a dining chair cushion?

Front to back on a shallow seat, because the lines lead the eye along the depth and make the seat look longer. Running them side to side makes a chair look wider. Whichever you choose, write it in your order note.

### Where should ties go on a chair cushion?

At the back posts, where the cushion meets the chair's uprights, is the usual spot. On a ladder-back, cream ties in the fabric's ground color bow neatly around each post and nearly disappear against the stripe.

### What is self piping on a chair cushion?

Piping made from the same fabric as the cushion. On a ticking stripe, self piping lets the pattern carry over the box edge without a break, so the pad reads as one soft block rather than a seat with a border.

### Should I order a fabric swatch before a set of chair cushions?

It helps, especially with stripes. A swatch shows the true width of the colored line against its ground in your own light, which a screen can blur. Order it, then quote its code in your message.
