# Mustard, rust and teal corduroy play arches in a row, and how the cloth feels, wears and washes

*Three pieces spread across a rug by a bright window. Before the colors, the hand: what corduroy does under small palms, knees and spilled juice.*

> **The quick answer:** Corduroy on a kids floor sofa or play arch is a plush, ribbed cloth: soft to grip, warm to sit on, and indoor only, with no UV or water resistance. The zippered covers wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, then air-dry. Corduroy play pieces are made without piping, so the ribs and the box edge draw the outline.

## Reading the row from the window side

Three pieces, one line, tallest first. A mustard arch, a rust arch, and a teal half-dome where the row ends.

The proportion is a staircase. It steps down from left to right, so the eye walks along it the way a child would. Mustard sits closest to the oak floor in tone. Rust is its warm neighbor, so the two arches read as a pair. Teal is the one cool piece, and the smallest. It gives the eye a place to stop.

There is no piping. On corduroy play pieces there never is. The edge is a soft rolled seam, and the ribs do the drawing.

The window on the left does something useful. It lights the inside of each arch and shows the underside is wrapped in the same corduroy. Nothing is left raw for a child to find.

The props are all things a child uses. A wooden toy kitchen. A book ledge on the wall. A rope basket of blocks, whose natural tones repeat the room. A cream rug dotted with stars, wide enough to catch a tumble. Linen curtains soften the light without closing it out.

## Pinned by Hana

Five pins, from the mustard arch to the basket of blocks.

1. **Mustard arch**: Warm mustard on the tallest piece matches the oak floor.
2. **Rust arch**: Rust is a close warm neighbor, so the two arches feel like a pair.
3. **Teal half-dome**: One cool piece at the end of the line gives the eye a place to stop.
4. **Covered underside**: Window light shows the inner curve is wrapped in the same corduroy.
5. **Block basket**: A basket of blocks repeats the natural tones of the room.

## The hand: ribs, pile and the day after the juice

Put your palm flat on [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) and move it. One way it feels smooth. The other way it resists a little. That is the pile, and it also changes the color: lighter from one side, deeper from the other. Turn every piece in a set the same way and the row reads as one color family. More on this in [wale and nap direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/).

The ribs give small hands something to grip when they climb. The pile is warm on bare legs in winter.

Wear is mostly about light and hair. Corduroy is an indoor fabric with no UV resistance, so the bright window in this photo is the one thing I would watch. Move the pieces through the room, or keep them out of the sunniest patch. Pet hair clings to the ribs; one owner asked for faux leather covers for that reason.

Cleaning is simple. Unzip, turn inside out, wash at 86°F (30°C) on a gentle cycle, air-dry.

Ribs for grip.
Pile for warmth.
A zipper for the day after the juice.

## Under two loft beds, a square, not a mattress

A parent wrote to the workshop about the space under the lower level of two [IKEA Kura](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#ikea-kura) beds. They wanted floor sofas there. The workshop first assumed a mattress-sized cushion, 38 x 75 in (97 x 190 cm). The parent corrected it: 38 x 38 in (97 x 97 cm), a square play area, not the whole bed footprint.

They ordered two full sets, each a floor cushion, backrest and pillows, in velvet, one color per bed.

Under a loft bed, say which you mean. The whole footprint, or a square to sit in. Leave a hand's width of floor.

## Buyer questions: liners, layers and colors

**A common question:** Can you add a waterproof layer to protect the foam? The cushion goes inside a dog house.

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Waterproof inner covers for the foam can be added at extra cost. For two cushions, 16 x 20 x 3 in and 16 x 20 x 2 in, they were paid through a separate link after the cushion order, and everything was made together.

**A common question:** Is the floor sofa made of two layers? Can I unfold it into a bed?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The seat is two separate layers: stack them as a couch or lay them flat as a bed. The standard sofa is about 39 in (1 m) wide and about 79 in (2 m) opened, and buyers find it comfortable to sleep on.

**A common question:** Can the ottoman or the other pieces be a different color from the sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Colors can be chosen per piece, a pink ottoman for example. On a mixed-color order the workshop asks which color goes on which piece.

> **Tailor's margin:** For a set of play pieces, try two warm neighbors, like mustard and rust, and one cool color on the smallest piece.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will sun through a playroom window fade corduroy?

It can. Corduroy is an indoor fabric with no UV resistance, and strong, prolonged sun fades indoor fabrics. Move the pieces around the room now and then, or keep them out of the brightest patch.

### How firm is the foam in kids' play pieces?

The kids play couch uses single-density T28 foam, about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³). For more support it can be upgraded to 32 kg/m³, about 2.0 lb/ft³.

### Why does one corduroy piece look lighter than its twin?

Usually the pile. Corduroy reads lighter from one side and deeper from the other, so two pieces cut from the same cloth can look different when they face opposite ways. Turn them to match before you judge the color.
