# A letter on mustard pebble weave, custom throw pillows and the color of light

*Élodie writes about one mustard corner, close enough to count the pebbles, and why the same color changes between morning, evening and the screen in your hand.*

> **The quick answer:** Judge custom throw pillow colors in daylight, not on a screen: screens can shift a shade slightly, and warm lamplight deepens a mustard that morning light at a window shows cleaner. A textured pebble weave looks richer than a smooth one in any light, because each raised pebble casts its own small shadow.

![Macro of a mustard pebble-textured pillow corner with matching self piping, resting on a mustard cushion](https://cushionguide.com/media/throw-pillows/mustard-pebble-weave-macro-piped-pillow-corner-1600.webp "Up close, the mustard pebble weave and its matching welt show how texture adds depth to a single color.")

## A square inch of mustard, sent with love

My friends,

I am sending you one square inch of mustard. Look closely: the pillow corner is a pebble weave, and every raised pebble throws its own small shadow. That is why this single color looks deep instead of flat. A smooth mustard would shout. This one hums.

The photograph is taken tight and warm, in low light. The pillow rests on a cushion cut from the same cloth, so you see what a matched set does: nothing competes, and the eye goes straight to texture. The welt is self piping, the same fabric turned into a cord, and it follows the corner in one smooth curve with no pleats. The corner is drawn by shape, not by a contrasting line. At the crown, the fill rounds the top without pulling the weave out of true.

Every [custom throw pillow](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/throw-pillows/) begins with a small decision like this one, and the [pillow cover studio](https://cushionguide.com/studio/pillow-cover-studio/) lets you try the welt before you commit.

## Pinned by Élodie at close range

Four pins: the piped corner point, the pebble relief, the matching base cushion and the soft crown.

1. **Piped corner point**: The welt follows the corner in one smooth curve with no pleats.
2. **Pebble relief**: Each raised pebble casts a small shadow, which is why the color looks deep.
3. **Matching base cushion**: The same fabric underneath shows how a set looks when colors match exactly.
4. **Soft pillow crown**: The fill rounds the top without pulling the weave out of shape.

## Morning, evening, and the screen in your hand

Now imagine this corner through a whole day. In the warm, low light of the photograph, mustard leans toward amber and honey. At a north window in the morning, the same cloth reads cleaner, a touch greener. Under a lamp at night it turns to old gold. None of these is wrong. They are all the color.

Your screen is the one unreliable witness in the room. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. Buyers ask the workshop for real-life photos of a shade for exactly this reason, and a swatch held at a window is better still. [Screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) and [fabric swatches before ordering](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/) walk through the test.

If you love mustard and fear it will be loud, choose a textured weave like this [performance and pet-friendly](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/performance-and-pet-friendly/) pebble. Texture softens a strong color more than a smooth weave can. Where in your home does the afternoon sun land?

## Seven covers for cushions a buyer already owned

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop wanting new covers only, for foam they already had: one bench cushion at 67 x 15 x 2 in and six chair cushions at 18 1/2 x 16 x 2 in, all in a stripe with piping and ties. They sent photos of the old cushions and a sketch showing which side the ties go on.

They ordered through the covers-only listing, and the set shipped together once every piece was finished. I love this story for its patience. When seven covers must agree in color, cut together and traveling together, they arrive as one family. The [covers for existing foam](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-covers-for-existing-foam/) Pattern and the [cushion covers](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/cushion-covers/) atlas show where to start.

## Buyer questions: single covers, lumbar sizes, slim bolsters

**A common question:** One cover on my set tore. Can I replace just that cover instead of the whole set?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Single covers are made on their own: one base-cushion cover, one straight backrest cover, or the covers for a corner chair, each quoted separately.

**A common question:** Is an 8 x 20 inch cushion a big one?

**The workshop's answer:** No. At 8 x 20 in (20 x 51 cm) it's a small lumbar size, not a seat cushion. The workshop confirmed the size and color by message before making it.

**A common question:** Can you make bolsters much skinnier than in your photos, and add extras for an L-shaped bench?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Bolsters are made in any diameter; one interior designer ordered 4 in (10 cm) bolsters to go with 2 in (5 cm) thick bench cushions. Extra or longer bolsters can be ordered separately once you give the size.

## On the cutting table: the mustard corner

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Throw pillow resting on a matching seat cushion |
| Fabric | Mustard pebble-textured performance weave |
| Piping | Self piping, one smooth curve at each corner |
| Edge | Knife edge |
| Texture | Raised pebbles that cast small shadows and deepen the color |
| Light in the photo | Warm and low |
| Color check | A swatch at a window in daylight, then again under a lamp |
| Best for | Anyone who wants mustard without a loud, flat finish |

> Mustard looks less loud in a pebble weave than in a smooth one, because every raised pebble casts its own small shadow.

> **Tailor's margin:** Hold a mustard swatch at a window in the morning and under a lamp at night before you commit to it.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does fabric color look different on my phone than in person?

Screens render color with their own brightness and warmth, so they can shift a shade slightly. Judge a fabric in daylight at a window, and ask for real-life photos or a swatch before choosing.

### Does a textured fabric change how strong a color looks?

Yes. Raised texture like a pebble weave casts tiny shadows across the surface, which deepens a color and softens it at once. The same mustard in a smooth weave reads flatter and louder.

### What is self piping on a throw pillow?

Piping cut from the same fabric as the pillow. It defines the corner by shape rather than by a contrasting line, and on a textured weave it can follow the corner in one smooth curve.

### Can I order new covers for cushions I already own?

Yes, through a covers-only order. Send the exact sizes, photos of the old cushions and a sketch of where any ties go, as one US buyer did for a bench and six chair cushions.
