# A letter about a mustard lounger and the mistakes it didn't make

*Gravel, a stock-tank pool, agave in rusted steel. Callum writes about a two-fabric lounger cushion that got the hard choices right, and the ones buyers usually get wrong.*

> **The quick answer:** A sunbed cushion for a gravel or desert yard should be a warm, earthy color such as mustard, not white, which shows dust within a day. Put the pattern on the backrest where it is seen, keep the seat plain, tie it to the frame and name piping by fabric code. The standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm) for seat and back.

## This lounger got five things right

Friend,

White cushions in a gravel yard last about a day before they look like a trail map. This lounger didn't make that mistake, or the four others I see every season.

Here's the picture. A charcoal wood lounger on wheels, parked on gravel beside a galvanized stock-tank pool. Agave in rust-colored steel planters, ornamental grasses, a horizontal slat fence. Hot, dry light, the kind you find across the [Southwest](https://cushionguide.com/places/arizona-southwest-cushions/). On the lounger, a [sunbed cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/chaise-and-sunbed-cushions/) in two fabrics of one color: a mustard and white kilim backrest and a plain mustard waffle seat, box-edged, self-piped, held down by short mustard ties.

The mustard picks up the dry grasses and the fence timber. The charcoal frame and the gray metal of the tank cool it down. The agave's spikes suit the geometric pattern. Nothing here is fighting.

The fabric is [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/). Don't expect it to feel like an indoor velvet; it's built to be durable first, and buyers have been consistently happy sitting on it. What color is the dust in your yard?

## Pinned by Callum

Five pins, from the kilim backrest to the stock tank that cools the yellow.

1. **Kilim backrest**: The bold mustard and white pattern stays where it is seen.
2. **Mustard waffle seat**: A plain textured seat in the same color keeps things calm.
3. **Mustard tie**: Short ties in the seat color hold the cushion to the slatted frame.
4. **Stock tank pool**: Galvanised metal cools down the warm yellow.
5. **Agave planter**: Spiky desert planting suits the earthy geometric pattern.

## Five mistakes this photo avoids

- ✗ White in a gravel yard. It shows dust within a day; mustard, sand or rust hide it.
- ✗ Pattern on the seat. Here the kilim sits on the backrest, where it is seen, and the seat that takes the wear stays plain waffle.
- ✗ A loose cushion on slats. Short ties in the seat color hold it to the frame and disappear into it.
- ✗ Asking for the blue in the stripe. Choose piping from the card by its fabric code.
- ✗ Measuring the old cushion. Measure the wooden base with a tape and send photos.

## The blue that wasn't there

A buyer wrote to the workshop wanting blue contrast piping on an outdoor lounge chair cushion. There was no solid outdoor blue, so the shop used a striped fabric as the piping. When it arrived, the buyer felt there was no contrast at all.

The shop offered a new cover. This time the buyer picked a light cream with a dark green piping, both named by code, and upgraded to 4 in (10 cm) foam for a small difference. The first cushion, at 58.3 in (148 cm), had also been too tight, so they measured the wooden base with a tape and sent photos. The new one was made at 32.7 x 59 x 4 in (83 x 150 x 10 cm). A holiday stretched production to two weeks, plus 3 to 5 days of delivery.

Two lessons in one chair. Outdoor solids are limited, so pick piping by its code. And measure the frame, not the cushion you had. Contrast choices are compared in [piping: matching, contrast or none](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/), and lounger sizing in [chaise lounge and sunbed cushion sizes](https://cushionguide.com/guides/chaise-lounge-sunbed-cushion-size/).

## Buyer questions: softness and thickness

**A common question:** Does outdoor fabric feel as soft and cozy as your indoor fabrics?

**The workshop's answer:** Not quite. Outdoor fabric won't feel as velvety soft as a standard indoor fabric, but it is still comfortable, and feedback on it has been consistently positive. It is made first of all to be a durable outdoor material.

**A common question:** What thickness would you suggest for a converted van's bench seat and backrest?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard is 4 in (10 cm) for both seat and back, and any thickness can be ordered. One van conversion used 4 in for a 52 x 17.3 in (132 x 44 cm) seat and 2 in (5 cm) for a 49 x 8.7 in (124.5 x 22 cm) backrest.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Lounger cushion, seat and backrest |
| Backrest fabric | Mustard and white kilim-pattern outdoor acrylic |
| Seat fabric | Plain mustard waffle weave |
| Piping | Self |
| Edge | Box |
| Ties | Short, in the seat color, to the slatted frame |
| Standard thickness | 4 in (10 cm) seat and back; other thicknesses on request |
| Frame | Charcoal wood lounger on wheels |
| Best for | Gravel yards, desert gardens, stock-tank pools |

> Name the piping by its fabric code, not as the blue in the stripe. Outdoor solids are limited, and a welt you haven't seen is a guess.

> **Tailor's margin:** In a gravel yard, skip white. Mustard, sand or rust hide the dust that white shows within a day.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What color sunbed cushion suits a gravel or desert yard?

An earthy warm color such as mustard, sand or rust. White shows dust within a day on gravel, while warm yellows echo dry grasses and timber, and a charcoal frame or galvanized metal nearby keeps the look cool.

### Can one lounger cushion use two different fabrics?

Yes. This one pairs a mustard and white kilim backrest with a plain mustard waffle seat. Keeping both in one color family lets the pattern sit where it is seen while the seat stays calm.

### How thick should a chaise lounge cushion be?

4 in (10 cm) is the standard for seat and back, and it is what one buyer upgraded to on a 32.7 x 59 in (83 x 150 cm) lounge chair cushion. Other thicknesses can be ordered to suit the frame.

### How do I keep a lounger cushion from sliding on a slatted frame?

Add short ties sewn into the cushion and knotted around the slats, ideally in the seat color so they disappear. On flat benches without slats, a non-slip base is the other option.
