# A mustard gingham corner floor cushion, and the cord that keeps its line

*Harlan reads a sunny checked corner seat in a greige room and weighs the one small decision that sets its edge: self piping, a contrasting cord, or none at all.*

> **The quick answer:** On a patterned corner floor cushion, self piping is usually the right call, because a cord cut from the same gingham keeps the box edge crisp without drawing a second line around a check that is already all lines. Contrast piping suits plain cloth. Leave piping off only for a soft, relaxed edge, and remember that a tufted cushion cannot take a removable cover.

## Across the counter: three floor-seat questions

**A common question:** Could you make a hexagon floor cushion, roughly 4 by 4.6 feet, to fit inside our kids' play structure?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, a hexagon can be made. The shop sends a reference drawing, and you mark two key measurements on it so the shape comes out right for the space.

**A common question:** Is the floor sofa comfortable enough for guests to sleep on for a few weeks?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The shop says it is very comfortable as a bed: it opens into a king-size sleeping surface and uses about 1.75 lb/ft³ (28 kg/m³) cold foam.

**A common question:** What is the corduroy bean bag sofa filled with, and does the pouf swivel?

**The workshop's answer:** It is filled with shredded foam. The pouf does not spin; the shop calls it a sturdy bean bag. The orange-brown color in the main photo is called brick.

## A dog, a tufted corner seat and a zipper that couldn't be

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a tufted corner floor cushion. They loved the tufting. They also had a dog, and they needed a cover that would come off for the wash.

The shop told them straight. A tufted cushion is sewn clean through, cover and filling together, so there is no zipper that can open it up. That left two honest roads: a zipped, non-tufted cushion whose cover comes off, or the tufted look with a fixed cover.

In a home with a dog I'd take the zipper every time. Buttons are handsome, but a cover you can wash is the one you'll still be glad of years from now. The trade is laid out in [tufted versus plain cushions](https://cushionguide.com/guides/tufted-vs-plain-cushions/), and the [pet-friendly cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/pet-friendly-cushions/) picks up from there.

## Why the cord on this check is cut from the check itself

Look at the seat before anything else. Mustard and cream gingham, boxed square, sitting low in a greige corner. It is the only warm thing in the room, and it knows it.

Now the edge. The piping is [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping), a cord covered in the same check, so the box edge reads as a firm ridge instead of an outline. That was the right call. Gingham is already nothing but lines. Run a navy or white cord around it and you draw one more line around a thousand small ones, and the eye starts counting squares instead of resting. Leave the piping off and the box goes soft at the corners, which suits a slouchy floor pillow but not a seat meant to hold its shape against a wall.

The two backrest pillows took the other road. They are overstuffed and finished with a flange, a flat border of cloth instead of a cord. That softer edge suits a pillow you lean into and punch back into shape, and it rounds off the hard geometry of the cubes above. Seat gets the ridge, backs get the border. Two edges, two jobs.

Everything else keeps quiet on purpose. Oak and white cubes float on the wall, so no storage crowds the floor around the seat. A white mushroom lamp stands on a black tray table right at seat height, where a floor-level reader needs the light. A cream bouclé pouf waits in front as a footrest or a spare seat. Cream rug, light oak floor, a few plants in pots. Greige and white give the mustard room to speak.

A seam is a promise, my friend, and the piping line is the part of that promise everybody sees. If you are drawing up a [corner floor cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/corner-floor-cushions/) of your own, settle the edge before the color; the [piping pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/) lays out all three roads, and more checks wait on the [gingham shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/checked-linen-and-gingham/). What pattern is on the cloth you have your eye on?

## Pinned by Harlan

Start at the mustard check on the seat, then follow the pins up to the plump backrests, the floating cubes and the lamp set at a reader's height.

1. **Mustard check seat**: In a greige room the gingham supplies nearly all the color.
2. **Overstuffed backrest**: Plump flanged pillows soften the hard geometry of the cube shelving.
3. **Floating wall cubes**: Oak and white cubes above keep storage off the floor around the pouf.
4. **Mushroom lamp on tray table**: The lamp sits right at seat height, the height a floor-level reader needs.
5. **Boucle footstool**: A round pouf in front doubles as a footrest or a spare seat.

## Self, contrast or none: what each does to a gingham edge

| Edge choice | What the line does | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Self piping | A firm ridge in the same check; the box holds its shape with no new color | The cloth is patterned, like this gingham |
| Contrast piping | A drawn outline that frames the whole shape | The cloth is plain and you want the edge to show |
| No piping | A softer seam that lets the corners relax | You want a casual, slouchy floor pillow |

## On the cutting table: the gingham corner seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Corner floor cushion with two backrest pillows |
| Fabric | Mustard and cream gingham check |
| Edge | Box |
| Piping | Self, covered in the same gingham |
| Backrests | Overstuffed, flanged edge |
| Cover | Zipped and removable only when not tufted |
| Room | Greige living room corner under wall cubes |
| Best for | Reading at floor level in a pale, quiet room |

> **Tailor's margin:** A tufted floor cushion keeps its cover on for good, so a home with a dog should order the zipped, untufted style.

## Questions buyers ask next

### When does contrast piping make sense on a floor cushion?

When the cloth is plain. A contrasting cord draws a clear outline around a solid color and shows off the box shape. On a check or stripe the same cord adds one more line to a busy surface, so self piping is the calmer choice.

### Why can't a tufted corner floor cushion have a zippered cover?

Tufting is stitched through the cover and the filling together, so the two can't be separated. If you need to wash the cover, order a zipped, non-tufted cushion; if you want the tufted look, accept a fixed cover.

### Where should a lamp go beside a low floor seat?

Low and close. In this corner a small mushroom lamp stands on a tray table at about seat height, so the light falls on a book held in the lap instead of over the reader's head.

### What kind of room suits a mustard checked floor seat?

A quiet one. Greige walls, white shelves and oak let the check carry nearly all the color. Keep the other pieces white, oak or cream, and one warm checked cushion is enough for the whole corner.
