# A mustard and cream velvet floor sofa that makes a narrow wall feel wider

*Hana reads a low velvet floor sofa against a warm plaster wall. The color stays at the edges. The seat stays close to the floor. The room gets its width back.*

> **The quick answer:** A modular floor sofa makes a narrow room feel larger because its low seat leaves the wall above it empty and keeps sight lines open. Keep bold color, like mustard velvet, on the end blocks and bolster caps, and let a cream seat carry the surface. For floor dining, a 3 in (7.5 cm) seat made slightly deeper can beat the standard 6 in (15 cm).

## Low seat, empty wall: why this corner reads wider

The seat sits just above the rug, and everything else in the corner follows from that.

A modular floor sofa is the calmest way to seat people in a narrow room. It leaves the wall above it empty. The plaster, the macramé and the window light get the space a tall sofa back would take. The eye travels further, and the room reads wider than its tape-measure width.

The color is placed with care. Mustard velvet is kept to the end blocks and the small caps on the bolster. The long seat and back stay cream. There is no piping, only plain box edges, so no line runs around the seat and the cream reads as one quiet plane. Side light moves across the velvet pile and warms the mustard toward gold.

The props are low or light on purpose. A rattan stool stands in for a side table, at the right height for someone sitting on the floor. Pampas in a white jug and the straw macramé stay in the same straw-to-gold range as the mustard, so the yellow looks chosen. The pothos shelf and the tall plant draw the eye upward, where the room has space to spare. The shaggy wool rug softens the step down and adds texture under the smooth velvet.

## Pinned by Hana

Five pins, from the macramé on the wall down to the rug that softens the step.

1. **Macramé hanging**: Straw-colored macramé makes the mustard look deliberate.
2. **Pampas on rattan stool**: A stool is the right height for a side table beside floor seating.
3. **Mustard base end**: Bold color is kept to the edges while the seat stays neutral.
4. **Mustard-capped bolster**: Small color caps on the bolster repeat the accent in the middle of the seat.
5. **Shaggy wool rug**: A deep pile softens the step down to a floor-level seat.

## Small-room rules, taken from one corner

- ✓ Keep the seat low so the wall above stays open.
- ✓ Put strong color on the end blocks and bolster caps, not on the seat.
- ✓ Use a low stool beside floor seating, not a standard side table.
- ✓ Leave a hand's width of floor at each end.
- ✓ Let plants carry the eye upward, where the room has space.
- ✓ Lay a deep rug where people step down to sit.

## The low table that set the seat height

A buyer in the US wanted a 48 x 20 in (122 x 51 cm) floor sofa for a low dining table. The standard 6 in (15 cm) seat was the problem. Their legs would not fit under the table.

We looked at 4 in (10 cm). Then lower. The final seat was 3 in (7.5 cm) high and made 22 in (56 cm) deep instead of 20 in, so the thinner seat still held a person well. The backrest and armrests stayed at 4 in (10 cm). The buyer also moved away from blue for the color.

At a low table, height is the first measurement. Depth gives back what thickness takes away.

Low seat.
Deeper seat.
Open wall.

## Buyer questions: bed sizes, corduroy and what the size covers

**A common question:** Are the teddy floor sofa mattresses a standard US twin size, and how big is the sofa once it opens into a bed?

**The workshop's answer:** Each seat mattress is twin XL, 39 x 79 in (99 x 201 cm), which is also the sofa's standard footprint. Laid side by side, the two mattresses make a sleeping surface of about 79 x 79 in (201 x 201 cm), roughly king size.

**A common question:** Is the floor sofa corduroy or velvet, and will the fabric hold up to a cat and the washing machine?

**The workshop's answer:** That model is corduroy, a cotton-polyester blend the workshop describes as very durable and scratch-resistant, so claws don't catch it easily. The covers come off and machine wash at 86°F (30°C) at most. The only assembly is the metal support bars.

**A common question:** Is the size in the drop-down for the seat cushion or the backrest, and what arrives in the set?

**The workshop's answer:** The size is the seat cushion. Choosing it gets you the seat plus a backrest and two armrest bolsters. If you want only one piece, such as just the backrest, the workshop makes a custom listing for it.

> **Tailor's margin:** At a low dining table, choose a 3 in floor sofa seat made 2 in deeper rather than the standard 6 in seat.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How low should a floor sofa seat be in a small living room?

Low enough that the wall above stays open. The standard floor sofa seat is about 6 in (15 cm); for sitting at a low table, one buyer went down to 3 in (7.5 cm) so their legs fit underneath. Try heights in the seat height calculator first.

### Can one floor sofa mix two velvet colors?

Yes. Put the stronger color on the smaller parts, such as end blocks, armrests or bolster caps, and the neutral on the seat and back. The accent then frames the piece instead of covering it, which keeps a small room calm.

### What goes beside a floor sofa instead of a side table?

A low stool or pouf. A standard side table stands too tall beside a floor-level seat. A rattan stool, as in this corner, puts a cup, a book or a jug of pampas right at hand height.

### Does a thinner floor sofa seat feel less comfortable?

It can, which is why depth helps. One buyer went from the standard 6 in seat to 3 in for floor dining and had it made 22 in (56 cm) deep instead of 20 in, so the thinner seat still held them well.
