# A mustard corduroy window seat in a teal nook, or how to bring the porch upstairs

*An upstairs nook over red rooftops is the closest thing to a porch some houses have. Here is what I'd borrow from the porch for it, and what I'd leave outside.*

> **The quick answer:** A mustard corduroy window seat cushion makes a narrow teal nook feel like a destination, because warm mustard jumps forward from deep teal paint. Borrow porch habits for it: firm foam that keeps its shape, a basket for throws, and a cushion measured wall to wall from true numbers, with any rounded corner traced on paper.

## A porch, one floor up

I grew up believing every house needs a porch. Some don't have one, so they make one out of a window. This nook is exactly that: a narrow slot painted deep teal, a white box seat, and red-tiled rooftops outside like a street seen from the front steps.

The [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) runs wall to wall in mustard corduroy, and against the teal it practically waves at you. Overcast light flattens most colors; mustard holds on. Self piping keeps the edge in the same cloth, so the seat reads as one warm block, and the white base matches the window frame.

On one side, oak shelves pick up the mustard's warmth, with a succulent in a ceramic pot. On the other, a gallery wall of small frames keeps things lively while the cushion stays plain. A wicker basket hides blankets, a fringed cream pillow leans at the end, and a jute rug bridges mustard and oak underfoot.

## One rounded corner and a drawing

A buyer messaged the workshop with a window seat that was a rectangle except for one [rounded corner](https://cushionguide.com/guides/rounded-corner-cushion-measuring/). The buyer drew it, wrote the sizes on it and sent a picture. The workshop priced it as a standard cushion, showed which size options to pick, and the look was borrowed straight from one of our photos: natural linen with brown piping.

The one surprise came at checkout, when tax and delivery were added. So here's the front-step advice: ask for the full cost to your door before you say yes.

Five things that turn a leftover landing into the best seat upstairs.

1. **Mustard wall-to-wall seat**: Warm mustard jumps forward from deep teal walls, making the seat the obvious place to be.
2. **Gallery wall**: Small frames keep one side lively while the cushion stays plain.
3. **Oak shelves**: Oak picks up the mustard's warmth on the other side.
4. **Wicker basket**: Hidden storage for blankets keeps the nook tidy.
5. **Jute rug**: Natural fiber bridges the mustard and the oak.

## What to borrow from the porch, and what to leave out there

From the porch, take three things:

- **A firm seat.** Porch cushions that sag get abandoned. The workshop's high-density foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), is firm, supportive and holds its shape.
- **A basket for throws.** On a porch it's a trunk; here it's wicker. Blankets nearby, not on the seat.
- **A seat everyone wants.** A bright cushion against dark paint makes a leftover landing look intended.

Leave the outdoor cloth outside. [Corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) is an indoor fabric with a soft hand, and a reading nook is where it belongs. What would you put in yours? There are more [reading nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/) to browse, and the [window seat measuring Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-window-seat-cushion/) walks you through the tape.

> Send a window seat cushion maker your true measurements, not measurements minus 1/2 in; the fit allowance is added in the workshop.

## Buyer questions: fit, curves and firmness

**A common question:** Should I take half an inch off my measurements so the cushion fits?

**The workshop's answer:** No. Send your true, exact measurements. The workshop handles every fitting allowance during production, so the cushion fits the space.

**A common question:** Can you make a curved cushion, and how do I measure the curve?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, curved, rounded-corner and asymmetrical cushions are all possible. Sketch it with total width, total depth and the depth at the shallowest and deepest points, or for tricky curves trace a paper template and photograph it flat beside a tape measure.

**A common question:** How firm is the cushion? I need very firm, not soft.

**The workshop's answer:** Very firm. The workshop uses one high-density foam, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), in all its cushions because it is supportive and keeps its shape over time.

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Window seat box cushion, wall to wall |
| Fabric | Mustard corduroy, ochre undertone |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Foam | About 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) high-density, very firm |
| Corners | Square, or rounded from a paper template |
| Measuring | True wall-to-wall numbers, no deductions |
| Best for | Narrow nooks, landings and box rooms |

> **Tailor's margin:** For a rounded corner, lay wrapping paper on the seat, trace the curve, cut it out and photograph it flat beside a tape measure.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a window seat cushion run wall to wall in a narrow nook?

Yes. Measure from wall to wall at both the front and the back of the seat, since walls are rarely perfectly square, and send both numbers. The workshop adds the fit allowance.

### Which cushion colors stand out against dark painted walls?

Warm, mid-strength colors like mustard, ochre or rust jump forward from deep teal, navy or green paint. Keep the seat base the same white as the window frame so only the cushion carries color.

### Can I copy the look of a cushion I saw in a photo?

Yes. Photos can be matched to fabric and piping codes, so you can borrow a look, such as natural linen with brown piping, and have it made in your own size and shape.
