# A mustard corduroy window seat cushion from above, and the mistakes it skips

*Pull up a chair. From up here you can see everything a window seat gets right, and what I have watched folks get wrong on three generations of porches.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion should stop just short of the ledge lip, not hang over it, and a seat longer than about 75 in (190 cm) is best split into equal pieces. Type the exact size in the order note, because the size menu only sets the price bracket, and open vacuum packs by cutting the outer plastic only.

The sill stays free for books and a mug.")

## A mustard corduroy window seat, seen from the stepladder

Somebody climbed up high for this photograph, and bless them for it. From above, a window seat can't hide a thing.

A long, slim mustard corduroy cushion sits on a painted ledge, a navy linen pillow at one end. A paper globe lamp glows between the ledge and a navy armchair, and the armchair wears a mustard pillow. The swap stitches the corner together, like sisters who borrow each other's sweaters.

Pine and white cube shelves hold the books. An aloe in a white pot and a mug sit on the sill, and the sill is kept for them. Out the window, a brick house across the street, the kind of view that earns one more chapter.

The ledge is shallow, so this [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) is a perch; the armchair takes the lounging. Now, the mistakes.

## Pinned on the photograph

Five spots I'd point at if we were standing on that cream rug together.

1. **Full-length seat pad**: From above you can see the cushion stops just short of the ledge lip, leaving a thin painted border.
2. **Pillow at the lamp end**: Placed at the lamp end, the pillow creates a natural head end for reading.
3. **Lit paper lamp**: The lamp stands between the armchair and the window seat, so both share one light.
4. **Mustard pillow on armchair**: The chair's mustard pillow echoes the seat and stitches the two halves of the corner together.
5. **Mug and books on sill**: The sill is kept for objects, the cushion for sitting.

## Five mistakes this corner skips

**Overhang.** The cushion stops just short of the ledge lip. A cushion that hangs over sags at the edge and catches every passing knee.

**One piece too long.** Very long seats are best split; the story below shows how.

**Trusting the size menu.** The dropdown on an order page picks a price bracket. The size you type in the exact-size box is what gets cut.

**A crowded seat.** Mug, books and the plant live on the sill. One pillow sits at the lamp end, so the seat has a head end for reading.

**Two seats, two lamps.** One paper lamp between the ledge and the armchair lights both.

What is the one thing on your window seat that shouldn't be there, neighbor?

## The 154-inch window seat and the kitchen knife

A buyer in the US had a built-in window seat 154.5 in (392 cm) long and 22 in (56 cm) deep, and wanted [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/). With the workshop, it was split into two identical 77.25 x 22 in (196 x 56 cm) cushions, ordered through the closest menu size with the exact measurements typed in the personalization box.

They fit. But they came tightly shrink-wrapped with no protective layer, and the knife that opened the pack cut the covers. The workshop offered new covers at cost; the buyer kept the cushions and came back later to order for other benches. Cut only the outer plastic, slowly, and keep the blade shallow. See [one piece or two](https://cushionguide.com/guides/long-bench-cushion-one-piece-or-two/).

## Questions from folks measuring their windows

**A common question:** The size I picked in the dropdown and the size I typed are different. Which one do you make?

**The workshop's answer:** The one you typed. The dropdown only selects the size range and sets the price; production follows the exact measurements in the size field. Pick 38–40 in in the menu and type 18 x 20, and the cushion is cut at 18 x 20.

**A common question:** How close to my measurements will a handmade cushion come out?

**The workshop's answer:** The stated tolerance is about ±1 in (2.5 cm), because cushions are handmade and foam is flexible; ½ to ¾ in (1 to 2 cm) is normally treated as acceptable. Every cushion is measured before it ships.

**A common question:** What does a custom window seat cushion cost?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on size and fabric, so each one is quoted. Recent requests included 23 x 76 in in emerald velvet, 31 x 63 in, and a pair at 46 x 22 and 69 x 21.5 in, each in its own color.

> Split a window seat cushion longer than about 75 in into equal pieces. A 154.5 in seat became two 77.25 in cushions, with the joint dead center.

> **Tailor's margin:** Open a vacuum-packed cushion by cutting the outer plastic only. One kitchen knife went too deep and cut two brand-new corduroy covers.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a window seat cushion cover the ledge edge to edge?

Close to it, but not over it. Give the true size of the seat and the workshop adds its own seam allowances. If the ledge has a rounded lip, stop the cushion just short of it so nothing hangs over.

### Will corduroy fade on a sunny window seat?

It can. Corduroy is an indoor fabric with no UV resistance, so hours of direct sun through glass will fade it over time. A sheer curtain or blind on summer afternoons slows that down.

### Can two cushions in one order be different colors?

Yes. Each cushion is its own line in the order, so a pair can be split between two colors. Write the fabric code for each piece in the note, and ask for daylight photos of both.
