# A mustard corduroy window seat cushion on a painted ledge, and the handwork behind it

*I wrote this one as a letter, because the best thing about this slim reading seat is the handwork you only notice when it's missing.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion on a shallow ledge should be slim and cut exactly reveal to reveal, with self piping and firm high-density foam so the front edge stays square. Mustard corduroy works on a living-room ledge when the seat color shows up once more across the room, like a mustard pillow on a navy armchair.

The navy pillow and armchair answer it from across the corner.")

## The shallow ledge everybody will fight over

Some seats get fought over. In my house, this one would start arguments before supper.

It is a shallow painted ledge, and somebody had the good sense to keep the [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) slim and cut it exactly reveal to reveal. No overhang. No gap at the ends for crumbs to fall into. A thicker cushion on a ledge this shallow would look perched, like a hat on a fence post. This one looks like it was always there.

Now the color. Mustard [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/) on the seat, one navy linen pillow against the glass. Across the corner, a navy armchair holding a mustard pillow. My grandmother called that trading colors across the porch, and it makes a room look planned instead of bought.

The paper globe lamp stands just outside the recess, on purpose. Its glow falls across the ribs of the cord, so on a gray afternoon the seat still looks warm. Who gets the ledge first in your house?

## Pinned by Rosa around the reading ledge

Five marks on the photograph, from the paper lamp down to the mug on the sill.

1. **Mustard corduroy cushion**: Mustard picks up the lamp's glow, so the seat looks warm even on a gray afternoon.
2. **Navy linen pillow**: Navy sits opposite mustard; a single pillow is enough to make the seat stand out.
3. **Paper globe lamp**: A paper shade throws soft light across the ledge, the key to an evening reading spot.
4. **Navy armchair**: The armchair repeats the pillow's navy so seat and sitting area read as one scheme.
5. **Mug on the sill**: The deep sill carries the mug and books, leaving the whole cushion free to sit on.

## Handwork on a corduroy cushion you only notice when it's missing

Heritage in a cushion is mostly small decisions nobody photographs. Here are the ones I'd check with my own hands.

**The piping is self piping.** It is cut from the same mustard cord, so the box edge stays crisp without drawing a line. About half of all orders go this way, and it is the workshop's usual advice. A welt one shade darker gives a quiet outline instead. There is more on [matching, contrast or no piping](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-piping-matching-contrast-none/).

**The ribs all run one way.** Corduroy has a wale and a nap, and a seat looks calmer when every panel is cut the same way round. The [wale and nap direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/) is worth a read before you order.

**The foam is firm.** A reading ledge gets sat on crosswise, knees up, back against the frame. High-density foam keeps the front edge square where legs hang over.

**The mug lives on the sill.** A deep sill carries the books and the coffee, so the whole cushion is free for sitting.

## The dog, the backrest and the one-piece mend

One buyer wrote in after the family dog tore into one backrest of their floor sofa. Just the one piece. The rest of the set was fine, and a whole new sofa was not in the budget.

Single armrests were not something the workshop sold. But it made a private listing for one straight middle backrest, filling included, in off-white corduroy to match the rest. One piece out, one piece in, and the sofa was whole again.

Kids and dogs are the real quality control. What I take from this one: a cushion made in pieces can be mended in pieces. A modular set lets you replace only the part that got hurt.

## What buyers asked about piping, foam and backrests

**A common question:** Should my piping match the cushion, or go with a contrast color?

**The workshop's answer:** It's a matter of taste, and orders split about half and half. Matching piping in the same fabric is the workshop's usual advice: lower risk, a clean seamless look. Contrast makes the edges stand out. A code one shade darker, such as L-44 on L-43, gives a subtle outline, and a soft fabric body can even take velvet piping.

**A common question:** How firm will the cushion be? I need it very firm, not soft.

**The workshop's answer:** Very firm. The workshop answered that the bench cushion uses high-density foam of 32 density: supportive, definitely not soft, and chosen because it keeps its shape over time.

**A common question:** Is the backrest as long as the seat cushion, and how tall is it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, the backrest is made the same length as the seat. The standard backrest is 16 in (40 cm) tall and 4 in (10 cm) thick; on the thick floor-couch style it is 4 to 5 in thick. Height can be changed, from about 8 in up to 16 in or more.

## On the cutting table: the mustard corduroy window seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Window seat box cushion, cut reveal to reveal |
| Fabric | Mustard corduroy (code V11) |
| Piping | Self piping in the same cord |
| Profile | Slim, to suit a shallow painted ledge |
| Foam | High-density, very firm, holds its shape |
| Color partner | Navy linen pillow; navy armchair with a mustard pillow across the room |
| Light | Paper globe floor lamp just outside the recess |
| Best for | [Reading nooks](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/) and living-room ledges |

> **Tailor's margin:** Repeat the window seat color once across the room. A mustard pillow on a navy armchair makes a mustard corduroy ledge look planned, not bought.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why is a corduroy window seat cushion cut reveal to reveal?

Cutting the cushion wall to wall inside the window opening leaves no gap at the ends for crumbs or pet hair and no overhang to catch knees. On a shallow ledge it also keeps the seat looking built in rather than set on top.

### Does a mustard seat cushion work in a gray living room?

Yes, if the mustard appears once more across the room. Here the seat takes a navy pillow and the navy armchair takes a mustard one. Warm lamplight across the corduroy ribs keeps the seat looking warm on gray afternoons.

### Can one torn piece of a modular floor sofa be remade on its own?

In the case retold here, yes: the workshop made a single straight middle backrest with filling, in off-white corduroy, after a dog tore the original. Armrests alone were not sold, so ask about the exact piece before assuming it is available.
