# Mustard corduroy on a window seat cushion, read in three kinds of light

*The same mustard is gold at noon and amber at nine. My friends, the cushion has not changed. The light has.*

> **The quick answer:** A mustard corduroy window seat cushion changes color with the light: warm lamplight pushes it toward amber, and daylight shows its true gold. Judge swatches and photos by a window in daylight, not on a screen, and pair the cushion with a steady partner color such as navy so the room holds together in any light.

![Low view across the ribbed top of a mustard corduroy window seat cushion toward a navy pillow, paper lamp and navy sofa](https://cushionguide.com/media/window-seat-cushions/mustard-corduroy-seat-top-macro-paper-lamp-1600.webp "A low shot down the length of the seat shows the plush mustard wales and the piping running unbroken along the edge. The lamp and navy sofa sit in soft focus beyond.")

## Down the length of the wales

This photograph is taken low, almost at seat height, looking along the top of a mustard corduroy window seat cushion toward a lit paper lamp. It is a portrait of texture more than of a room.

The wales run across the seat. So the lamp's light rakes over every rib, and each rib keeps a thin line of shadow. That is why corduroy looks richer on camera than a flat weave: it is never one color, always two or three, gold on the crest and amber in the valley.

Follow the long edge. The self piping runs the full length with no visible join, which takes one long strip joined out of sight at the back. On a long window seat, that unbroken line is what makes the cushion look tailored rather than bought.

At the far end, a navy linen pillow marks the head of the seat, where you lean back to read. Beyond, soft and out of focus, a navy sofa carries a mustard pillow. The pair repeats in reverse. Books and a stoneware mug on the sill, pine book cubes below: small warm woods that keep the navy from turning cold.

Here mustard speaks; navy, greige and pine listen. What color is your mustard at nine at night? The wales and the nap are explained in [corduroy wale and nap direction](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/), and the family lives under [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/).

## Pinned by Élodie: five points along the seat

Five pins, from the plush wales in the foreground to the paper lamp warming the far end.

1. **Plush corduroy wales**: Wide, soft wales catch light on every rib, which is why cord looks richer than flat weaves on camera.
2. **Piped long edge**: The piping runs the full length with no visible join, a sign of one continuous bias strip.
3. **Pillow at the far end**: From this angle the pillow marks the head of the seat, where you lean back to read.
4. **Paper lamp glow**: Warm light from the lamp deepens the mustard toward amber.
5. **Navy sofa and pillow**: The sofa repeats the seat's color pairing in reverse.

## One mustard, three lights

- Mustard at noon — #C9A032 — Daylight from the window: the true gold, the one to match against.
- Mustard by lamplight — #B7792A — Under the paper lamp the ribs deepen toward amber.
- Ink navy — #1F2A44 — The pillow and the sofa beyond. Mustard's partner, repeated twice.
- Soft greige — #B8AFA2 — The walls. Quiet enough to let one color speak.
- Pine — #C99B63 — Book cubes and sill. A warm wood between gold and navy.

## Daylight photos, every side measured

A buyer wrote to the workshop about a gift for a sister: a window seat cushion for a new apartment, following the angled ends of the seat rather than a plain rectangle. They measured every side and sent photos taken in daylight, because they wanted the color to match the dining chairs.

That instinct was exactly right. Daylight never lies; your screen sometimes does. A phone or monitor can push a mustard toward lemon or toward brown depending on its settings, and a lamp-lit photo warms everything. Taken by a window in daylight, the photos of the chairs told the truth.

They also asked about two-tone fabrics. The chart the shop shared was solid colors, so a solid matched to the chairs was the answer. The shape was confirmed, and the cushion took 7 to 9 days to make plus 2 to 4 days to arrive. For your own matching, read [cushion color on screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/) and order [fabric swatches before you commit](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/).

## Buyer questions: slim seats, notches and tall backs

**A common question:** How thin can a window seat cushion go? I'd like 2 in or even 1 in so it slides under the sill.

**The workshop's answer:** 2 in (5 cm) is available; the shop switched on a 2 in option for the trapezoid shape, whose thicknesses otherwise start at 3 in (7.5 cm), with 4 and 5 in (10 and 12.5 cm) also offered. 1 in (2.5 cm) can be made, but it is extremely thin for sitting and may not support you well, so the shop recommends at least 2 in.

**A common question:** Will a notch or a cut-out corner make my cushion cost more?

**The workshop's answer:** On the custom-shape option, the price follows the size range you select, and the corner shape itself adds nothing. The custom-shape option is priced above the plain rectangle, though, so a notched cushion ordered as a rectangle ends up with a price difference to settle.

**A common question:** How tall and how thick should a back cushion be?

**The workshop's answer:** For one buyer planning an 11 3/4 in (30 cm) back cushion, the shop advised 15 3/4 in (40 cm), because the taller back supports better. For a deep-base sofa it suggested a 7 7/8 in (20 cm) seat with a 17 3/4 in (45 cm) back, 25 5/8 in (65 cm) in all. Its backrests are 6 in (15 cm) thick, even when the seat is 8 in (20 cm).

## On the cutting table: the mustard seat

| Wale direction | Across the seat, so light rakes each rib |
| Piping | Self piping, one continuous strip along the long edge |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Partner color | Ink navy, on the pillow and the sofa beyond |
| Best light | Low, side-on lamplight |
| Color check | Swatches judged by a window in daylight |
| Best for | Reading seats in warm, lamp-lit living rooms |

> **Tailor's margin:** Put a warm lamp at one end of a corduroy window seat. Low, side-on light rakes across the wales and shows every rib.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does my cushion look different in the photo than in my room?

Light changes color. Lamplight warms mustard toward amber, daylight shows it truly, and screens shift it depending on their settings. Compare a physical swatch by a window in daylight before you decide.

### Which way should corduroy wales run on a window seat?

On this seat they run across the depth, so a lamp at one end rakes over every rib. That side-on light is what makes corduroy look rich rather than flat.

### What color pairs with a mustard window seat cushion?

Navy is the classic partner. Here a navy linen pillow sits on the seat and a navy sofa with a mustard pillow sits beyond, so the pair repeats in reverse and the room holds together.

### Can a window seat cushion follow angled ends?

Yes, as a custom shape. Measure every edge plus the back and front lengths, and send daylight photos if you need the color matched to furniture already in the room.
