# Mustard corduroy banquette cushion with ivory piping: a letter on self, contrast or no welt at all

*The ivory line around this dining seat was the smallest decision on the order, and the one your eye keeps coming back to.*

> **The quick answer:** Choose contrast piping on a banquette cushion when you want the seat framed against its base, self piping when you want the fabric to lead, and no piping for the softest edge. All three cost the same, since piping is included. The welt sits on the seam, so it never changes the ordered size, and it can be cut from any code on any chart.

## A letter from the dining bench: why the welt is ivory

To the one building a banquette this season,

The piping is the smallest line on a cushion and the first one anybody sees. Look at this mustard seat a while and your eye keeps running around that thin ivory edge.

Here is what the tailor reads. A [banquette cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/banquette-cushions/) in two parts, a box-edge seat and a tall back pad, both in mustard [corduroy](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/). The ribs run up and down the back, so a tall pad looks taller and stands straighter. On the seat they hide the wear of everyday dinners and feel warm under the hand.

Now the welt. Ivory piping follows the top and bottom seams and repeats the white paneled base below. The mustard becomes a block inside a frame, like a print in a pale mat, and bench and cushion read as one piece of furniture.

The room backs the choice. The round wall clock has a warm frame in the same ochre, and the patterned rug carries rust and gold down to the floor. A gallery wall of bird, botanical and moon prints, a fiddle-leaf fig and a glass-front cabinet of ceramics give the corner a layered café feel. The plate and linen runner say people eat here every day.

Piping is included whichever way you go, and so is leaving it off. It can be cut from any code on any chart, so write two codes in your order note, one for the body and one for the welt. Orders split roughly half and half between [self piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#self-piping) and [contrast piping](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#contrast-piping). Torn? Ask for free close-up photos of the two side by side.

A seam is a promise, my friend, and piping is the part of the promise you can see. Choose it the way you'd choose a picture frame: for the wall as much as the picture.

## Pinned by Harlan: five marks on a café corner

Five pins, from the tall ribbed back to the rug that carries the mustard down to the floor.

1. **Tall corduroy back**: Vertical ribs make the tall back pad look even taller and more upright.
2. **Corduroy seat**: Ribs hide wear on a seat people use every day and feel warm to the touch.
3. **Ivory piping**: The pale welt mirrors the white paneled bench so the mustard block looks framed.
4. **Wall clock**: The clock's warm frame repeats the ochre of the corduroy.
5. **Patterned rug**: Rust and gold tones in the rug tie the floor to the bench color.

## Self, contrast or none: three lines on one seat

| Piping | What the line does | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Self (matching) | Firms the edge in the body color; the fabric leads | The cloth is the star, or the room is busy |
| Contrast | Draws the outline in a second color and frames the block | You want the seat tied to paint or wood |
| None | A soft, plain box edge; on corduroy the ribs draw it | You want the quietest line |

## Ten measurements, two cushions and an angled L

A family wrote to the workshop while building a kitchen bench. Two small children, so the brief was plain: light beige, and easy to clean.

The bench was an L with 45-degree front corners, and they sent ten measurements lettered A to J. Among them were a run of about 100 1/2 in (255 cm), another of about 75 1/2 in (192 cm) and two angled corners of about 5 1/4 in (13.5 cm). The workshop quoted it as two cushions meeting at the corner, which is how an angled L sits best; [which piece owns the corner](https://cushionguide.com/guides/l-shaped-cushion-corner-joint/) explains why.

The color took longer than the cutting. They had an NCS paint reference for the room and hesitated between two linen-look codes, L02 and L08. After close-up photos and videos of both swatches, everyone agreed L02 was the better light beige, and they confirmed it machine washes below 86°F (30°C). They were away on vacation, so the order was held and shipped to arrive after they got home.

Hold the swatch against the paint, not the screen. What does your own bench measure along its longest wall?

## Buyer questions: a sample, a half inch and two fabrics on one cushion

**A common question:** There's a 'fabric sample' choice in the size menu. What is that for?

**The workshop's answer:** It orders a sample of the fabric, so you can see the colors and feel the cloth before you order the cushions themselves.

**A common question:** Could my bench cushion be 2 1/2 in thick instead of one of the standard thicknesses?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Write 2 1/2 in as the thickness in the exact-size section when you order, and it will be made that way. Metric values can be written the same way, for a thickness such as about 5 in (12.5 cm).

**A common question:** Can the top and bottom of a cushion be one fabric and the side band another?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Two fabrics mean extra cutting and sewing, so a small surcharge applies. For a 12 x 36 3/4 in (30.5 x 93.5 cm) cushion, the buyer picked the next size up and wrote the exact size and three codes in personalization: N05 top and bottom, N33 sides, L-41 piping.

## On the cutting table: the mustard dining banquette

| | |
|---|---|
| Pieces | Box-edge seat cushion plus a separate tall back cushion |
| Fabric | Mustard corduroy, ribs running vertically; indoor use |
| Piping | Ivory contrast welt on the top and bottom seams |
| Piping options | Self, contrast or none, all included; double piping optional |
| Thickness | 4 in (10 cm) standard; 2, 3 and 5 in (5, 7.5 and 12.5 cm) also offered |
| Foam | 32-density, about 2.0 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), wrapped in polyester wadding |
| Zipper | Hidden on the back edge or the underside, your choice |
| Care | Zip-off cover, 86°F (30°C) maximum, inside out, air-dry |
| Best for | Everyday dining in a kitchen nook |

> **Tailor's margin:** Hold the piping swatch against the painted base, not against the cushion fabric. The welt answers the woodwork.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a corduroy banquette cushion have piping when corduroy floor sofas don't?

Yes. The plush corduroy floor sofas are made without piping by design, because the ribs already outline them. Bench and banquette cushions are sewn as box cushions, and there the welt can match, contrast or be left off at the same price.

### Does piping make a banquette cushion bigger than the size I ordered?

No. The welt sits in the seam line, so a 16 in (41 cm) deep seat with piping is still 16 in deep. Give the true measurements of the bench and the workshop adds its own seam and fit allowances.

### Which fabrics can contrast piping on a dining bench cushion be cut from?

Any code on any chart, since there is no separate piping chart. Write the body code and the piping code separately in your order note, because neighboring numbers on one chart can differ only in tone.
