# A mustard bouclé custom bench cushion, and why texture beats a print here

*No stripe, no floral, no check anywhere in this corner. Still, nothing in it is plain. I took the settle apart on paper to find out where the pattern went.*

> **The quick answer:** A mustard bouclé custom bench cushion can carry a room without any print, because the loops of the weave work as a small, even pattern beside smooth copper and chipped paint. Mix one texture, one plain and at most one pattern. For a settle with arms, measure between the arms at seat height and order that inner width.

## Pinned by Nate: five points from the sill to the settle arm

Five pins, from the mustard bouclé seat to the open shutters that throw low sun straight across it.

1. **Mustard bouclé seat**: Cut to sit inside the arms and back, a snug fit that stops it sliding forward.
2. **Sunflowers**: The flowers repeat the exact gold of the seat just above it.
3. **Lavender in copper**: Purple and copper at one end balance the yellow at the other.
4. **Painted settle arm**: Chipped cream paint keeps the look relaxed next to a plush new cushion.
5. **Weathered shutters**: Open shutters let low sun fall straight across the textured seat.

## Where the pattern went

Look for a print in this corner and you won't find one. Look for pattern and it is everywhere. The mustard bouclé is a field of small loops, each catching the low sun from the open shutters. From across the kitchen, that texture reads like a fine, even dot.

Every other surface is either smooth or broken. The copper saucepan and the copper pot of lavender are smooth and bright. The settle's cream paint is chipped, which gives a loose, random pattern of its own. The linen cloth draped at the arm is a plain weave, flat and quiet. Three kinds of surface, no printed fabric.

Color ties them together, and the color is gold. The sunflowers in the copper jug sit right above the seat and repeat its exact yellow. The iron candlestick carries a yellow candle. The lavender sits at the far end as the counterweight, purple against yellow, so the eye doesn't slide off one side of the frame. The olive sprigs in the cream jug add a gray-green that sits between the two.

Want stripes? Add them in one place only. A ticking-stripe lumbar pillow against bouclé works, because a stripe is straight and a loop is round. Add a second print and the settle starts arguing with the flowers.

Fit matters as much as color. The cushion is cut to sit inside the arms and back, and that snug fit is why it doesn't creep forward when someone perches on the front edge. The loops come from our [bouclé and teddy fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/), the shape sits with the other [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) and [kitchen nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kitchen-nook-cushions/), and you can rough out a size in the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/).

What is the one texture already living in your kitchen nook?

## The corner in layers: surface, pattern load, job

| Layer | Surface | Pattern load | Job it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Floor | Terracotta, matte | Low | Warms the base under a cream frame |
| 2. Settle | Chipped cream paint | Random, broken | Keeps a new cushion from looking too new |
| 3. Seat | Mustard bouclé loops | Fine and even | Does the work of a print |
| 4. Arm drape | Plain linen cloth | None | A rest for the eye next to the loops |
| 5. Sill | Copper pot, saucepan, jug | None, reflective | Smooth metal against soft texture |
| 6. Flowers | Sunflowers, lavender, olive | Color only | Gold repeats the seat; purple balances it |

## A 78 in seat with four square bites

A buyer messaged the workshop needing one big seat cushion, 78 x 41 3/8 in (198 x 105 cm) overall, with a 2 3/8 x 2 3/8 in (6 x 6 cm) square notch cut from each corner. Read it as a 73 1/4 x 36 5/8 in (186 x 93 cm) rectangle with 2 3/8 in added on every side, minus the four corners.

The first order came through the plain rectangle option. The shop cancelled it with a full refund and sent the custom-shape option, where checkout asks for a drawing. One more snag: the 41 3/8 in (105 cm) depth ran past that option's 40 1/8 in (102 cm) maximum. The advice was to pick the largest range, because production follows the uploaded drawing and the range only sets the price. The reorder went straight into production.

Notches around posts and casings work the same way, partner; the method is in [notched cushion cutouts](https://cushionguide.com/guides/notched-cushion-cutouts-posts-casings/). Measure twice; the fabric remembers.

## Buyer questions: zippers, four-sided drawings and a 10-foot bench

**A common question:** Will my bench cushion have a zipper so I can take the cover off and wash it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cushion comes with a zippered, removable cover, and cover-only orders are sent with zippers too.

**A common question:** How do I send measurements for a trapezoid window seat cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop sends a drawing with the sides labeled A, B, C and D, and you fill in each length, for example 43 1/4, 48, 13 3/4 and 13 3/8 in (110, 122, 35 and 34 cm) at 3 1/2 in (9 cm) thick. A bay-window trapezoid with a 28 in (71 cm) back, 27 in (69 cm) sides and a 65 in (165 cm) front was quoted from those numbers. Trapezoids can also be made in tufted corduroy.

**A common question:** My kitchen bench is almost 10 feet long. Will the cushion come as one piece or two?

**The workshop's answer:** Your choice. A 117 3/4 in (299 cm) bench can be made as a single piece or split into two cushions; say which you want with the order. For kitchen benches, send a photo and the measurements and the shop will advise whether one cushion or separate pieces makes more sense.

## On the cutting table: the painted settle

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Settle seat cushion, cut to sit inside the arms and back |
| Fabric | Mustard bouclé, fine even loops |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Piping | None, so the loops run to the seam |
| Fit | Inner width measured between the arms at seat height |
| Cover | Zippered and removable |
| Notched shapes | Custom-shape option with a drawing; the range sets only the price |
| Pattern mix | One texture, one plain, one pattern at most |
| Best for | Kitchen nooks and settles in warm, low sun |

> A mustard bouclé bench cushion needs no print. The loops already act as the pattern, so pair them with one plain fabric and one stripe at most.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure a settle between its arms at seat height, not across the top. Arms flare, and a cushion cut to the top width slides forward.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can I mix a bouclé cushion with striped pillows?

Yes, as long as the stripe appears in one place only. Bouclé loops read as a fine, even texture, so a single straight stripe contrasts well. Add a second print and the pieces compete; keep the other surfaces plain, like linen, paint or metal.

### What does a snug fit inside settle arms actually do?

It stops the cushion creeping forward. When the cushion fills the inner width between the arms and meets the back, the frame holds it on three sides, so sitting on the front edge doesn't push it out.

### Can a bench cushion have cut-outs at the corners?

Yes. Corner notches go through the custom-shape option with a drawing of every side and each notch. One seat, 78 x 41 3/8 in (198 x 105 cm), had a 2 3/8 in (6 cm) square notch at each corner.
