# A mustard bouclé bench pad from above, and where the budget should go

*Seen from overhead, every color on this walnut bench is rationed. Élodie reads it for the money: what repays you for years, and what never will.*

> **The quick answer:** For an entryway bench cushion, spend on the fabric you touch every day and save on thickness, extra pillows and trims. The standard pad is 4 in (10 cm), a bench with separate back cushions sits well at about 3 in (7.5 cm), and thicker always costs more. Asking for seat and back cushions as one set can bring the total below the pieces priced one by one.

![Overhead view of a mustard bouclé bench cushion on walnut with cream and sage pillows, wheat vase and wicker basket](https://cushionguide.com/media/bench-cushions/mustard-boucle-bench-pad-overhead-sage-cream-pillows-1024.webp "Seen from above, the mustard pad sets the color and every prop below it repeats one of its accents.")

## Pinned by Élodie, from overhead

Five pins read from above: the mustard pad, two pillows, and the floor props that echo them.

1. **Mustard bench pad**: Mustard holds its own against dark walnut, where cream would glare and brown would disappear.
2. **Cream bouclé lumbar**: A long cream lumbar breaks up the mustard and matches the vases on the floor.
3. **Sage square pillow**: Sage behind the lumbar links to the folded throw in the basket below.
4. **Dried wheat vase**: Wheat in the same golden tone repeats the cushion color at floor level.
5. **Basket with sage throw**: A fringed throw in a wicker basket gives the bench a grab-and-go blanket.

## Three colors, rationed like saffron

From overhead, the whole budget of this walnut bench is visible at once: one saturated mustard bouclé pad, two quiet pillows, and floor props that each repeat one of those three colors.

**The pad.** Mustard, where it counts. Against dark walnut, cream would glare and brown would vanish; mustard glows. This is where the money went, and rightly. An [entryway bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/mudroom-and-entryway-bench-cushions/) takes wet coats, grocery bags and boots being tugged on, every single day.

**The pillows.** A long cream lumbar and a sage square, both in [bouclé](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/boucle-and-teddy/), sit at one end only. Most of the pad stays clear, so it still reads as a seat. Two pillows, not five: that is a saving you can see.

**The floor.** Dried wheat in a cream vase repeats the mustard at ground level. An olive sprig in a small vase answers the sage. A wicker basket holds a fringed sage throw to grab on the way out. The cream wool rug with rust diamonds warms the dark boards.

Here is the whole trick, my friends. Let one color speak and the others listen. Which color in your hallway already does the talking?

## Mustard bouclé bench pad: where to spend and save

| Part | Spend or save | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Spend | It meets every coat, bag and boot; choose it for the traffic, then the color |
| Thickness | Save | 4 in (10 cm) is the standard, and every extra inch adds cost |
| Pillows | Save | Two at one end keep the seat usable and the look deliberate |
| Piping | Skip | This pad has none; the looped surface already softens the edge |
| Seat plus backs | Ask | Quoted as one set, they can cost less than each piece alone |
| Echo colors | Free | Repeat the pad's colors in a vase, basket or throw you already own |

## One seat, three backs, one quote

A buyer messaged the workshop about a bench with a seat cushion and three back cushions. The seat was 66 x 20.5 in (168 x 52 cm), about 2 3/4 in (7 cm) thick, and the three backs 22 x 18 in (56 x 46 cm), all in a striped fabric.

The shop explained that its standard seat for a bench with separate backs runs about 3 in (7.5 cm), so it already matched what the buyer had pictured. Then it quoted the four pieces together as a set, for less than pricing each piece on its own, pending the choice of stripe code.

That is the saving I like best. Nothing gets thinner or plainer; you simply ask for the whole bench at once. If your size sits between options, the Pattern on [sizes not on the menu](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-size-cushion-not-on-menu/) explains how to order it.

## Buyer questions: thickness, sizes and turnaround

**A common question:** I don't want a thick, heavy cushion. What thicknesses can you make?

**The workshop's answer:** The standard is 4 in (10 cm), but any thickness can be made. Buyers have gone thinner, at 3 in or about 2 1/2 in (6 cm), and thicker, at 6, 8 and 9 in. Velvet bench mattresses can be about 2 1/2 or 3 in (6 or 8 cm) instead of 4 in. Thicker cushions cost more; write the thickness you want in the order note.

**A common question:** My measurements aren't in the size drop-down. Can you still make the cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, every cushion can be made to your measurements. Send length, width and thickness, or a drawing for an odd shape, and the shop adds your size to the listing or sends a custom order link. Sometimes you simply order the nearest size and note the real one: a 20 x 20 in option has been made as 21 x 21 x 3 in.

**A common question:** What's your usual turnaround, from order to doorstep?

**The workshop's answer:** It depends on the season and the piece: production comes first, then delivery, and very busy periods run longer, custom trapezoids included. Custom-fabric or fully custom pieces take longer still. Ask for the current turnaround in writing before you order.

> **Tailor's margin:** Keep pillows at one end of a long bench, then repeat their colors once more nearby: in a throw, a vase or a basket.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is bouclé a good choice for an entryway bench?

It can be, in a color that forgives. Mustard hides dust and scuffs better than cream and glows against dark wood. Bouclé's looped surface can catch on buckles and zippers, so read up on care and keep sharp bags off the seat.

### How thick should an entryway bench cushion be?

For a bench you perch on to pull on boots, 3 to 4 in (7.5 to 10 cm) is plenty. The 4 in standard suits most seats, about 3 in suits a bench with separate back cushions, and going thicker adds cost.

### Where should pillows sit on a long bench?

Group them at one end. Most of the pad stays clear for sitting, and the pillows read as a deliberate corner rather than clutter. On this walnut bench, one cream lumbar and one sage square are enough.

### Why mustard on a dark walnut bench?

Contrast with warmth. Cream would glare against dark walnut and brown would disappear into it. Mustard has enough depth to glow, and the dried wheat in the vase below repeats it at floor level.
