# A mushroom weave bench cushion set, put through a week of real life

*A letter from Maggie about a matching seat and back cushion on a pale oak box bench, and what children, dogs, coffee and a sunny window will do to it.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion with a matching backrest ages best in a mid-tone woven fabric like mushroom, with zippered covers you can wash and a back cushion sized to how high you lean. Mushroom hides crumbs and paw dust better than cream, and a box edge keeps its line where children perch. For big dogs at the door, outdoor fabric is tougher.

## A letter about the oak bench

Dear reader with the plain oak bench,

You asked what this set will look like in a year. Fair question. Photographs are taken on the one clean morning a room ever has.

Here is the set: a seat cushion and one long back cushion in the same mushroom weave, piped in self fabric, on a pale oak box with a fiddle-leaf fig at the open end. The back cushion simply leans on the wall. It is nearly as tall as the seat is deep, so it gives real support, and the bench becomes a small sofa.

Now let me run it through a week.

**Monday, the children.** They sit on the front edge and slide. A box edge with self piping keeps a clean line there, and mushroom forgives a sneaker scuff that cream would not.

**Wednesday, the coffee.** Ask for zippered covers. The workshop makes them removable and washable, and I would not order a family bench any other way.

**Friday, the dog.** A woven mid-tone hides paw dust. If the bench sits by a door where big dogs come and go, the workshop points buyers to outdoor fabric, the most rugged cloth it has.

**Sunday, the sun.** This window has linen curtains, and good for it. A seat in daily sun should be flipped and turned now and then so it fades evenly rather than in one band.

What the photo gets right is the single fabric. Seat and back in one cloth read as upholstery, not two purchases. The cream wool rug, oak box and linen curtain stay in the same warm neutral family, so nothing fights.

See the [bench cushion atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/), the [backrest cushion shelf](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/backrest-cushions/) and the [back cushion height pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/back-cushion-height-sizing/) before you measure up the wall. Woven cloths like this one sit on the [jacquard and damask shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/jacquard-and-damask/). And one old rule of mine: measure the bench, not the cushion you used to have.

## Pinned by Maggie: the oak box bench

The first pin sits on the leaning backrest; the last one sits on the raw oak box that keeps a generous set looking light.

1. **Loose backrest**: One long back cushion leans on the wall and turns a bench into a small sofa.
2. **Seat cushion**: Seat and back share one fabric, so the pair reads as one upholstered piece.
3. **Piped back edge**: Self piping outlines the backrest and helps it hold its rectangle upright.
4. **Fiddle-leaf fig**: A tall plant at the open end frames the bench the way an arm would.
5. **Pale oak base**: The raw oak box keeps the look light under a generous cushion set.

## The navy ticking banquette that came back for pillows

A buyer in the US chose a navy blue ticking stripe for a custom banquette cushion and liked it enough to come back. This time she wanted three matching lumbar pillows: covers 24 x 12 in (61 x 30 cm) with inserts about an inch larger, 25 x 13 in (64 x 33 cm), for a plump look.

The covers were zippered, removable and washable. That is the daily-life test passed in advance: pillows on a family bench get hugged, leaned on and dropped on the floor.

The lesson I keep: an insert about 1 in (2.5 cm) larger than its cover fills the corners and gives a lumbar pillow a full, plump look. The [lumbar pillow shelf](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/lumbar-pillows/) has more.

## How the set will age: my checklist

- ✓ Mid-tone color: hides crumbs, paw dust and scuffs better than cream or white
- ✓ Zippered covers: off for washing after the first spill
- ✓ Box edge with self piping: keeps the front edge crisp where children perch
- ✓ Matching back cushion: order it with the seat so both come from one fabric
- ✓ Sunny window: flip and turn the seat now and then so it fades evenly
- ✓ Big dogs at the door: ask about outdoor fabric instead

## On the cutting table: seat and back

| | |
|---|---|
| Pieces | Seat cushion plus one long loose back cushion |
| Fabric | Mushroom woven fabric, same on both pieces |
| Edge | Box |
| Piping | Self piping on seat and back |
| Back cushion | Leans on the wall; nearly as tall as the seat is deep |
| Covers | Zippered, removable, washable |
| Measure | Bench top, plus how high up the wall you lean |
| Best for | Oak box benches, window walls, family rooms |

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** How do I order the tufted French mattress style in a size that isn't on the menu?

**The workshop's answer:** Order from the tufted (French mattress) listing, pick the size closest to yours, and type the exact measurements and fabric color in the personalization box; the color dropdown may be switched off for this. If your size is far from every option, message first so the shop can tell you which one to choose.

**A common question:** Can I buy extra fabric to match my cushion for another upholstery project?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The shop has sold about 2.2 yards (2 m) of cushion fabric and shipped it together with the cushion for a buyer's matching upholstery project.

**A common question:** Could you make a corner floor cushion with backrests for a corner 66 inches across with 44-inch sides?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, and the shop quoted it. First it checked whether the numbers, 66 in (168 cm) across and 44 in (112 cm) per side, were wall sizes, and whether the 14 in (36 cm) height ran from the floor to the top of the backrest. You then choose a color number on the custom listing.

> A bench cushion and backrest cut from one mushroom weave read as upholstery, not add-ons, and a mid-tone cloth hides the week's crumbs.

> **Tailor's margin:** Order the back cushion with the seat: one fabric, one cutting, and the bench reads as a single upholstered piece.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How tall should a loose back cushion be on an oak box bench?

Decide how high up the wall you want to lean, then size the back to reach it. On this bench the back cushion is nearly as tall as the seat is deep, which gives real support instead of decoration.

### Will a mushroom colored bench cushion show dog hair?

Less than cream or black. A mid-tone woven surface blends light and dark hair and paw dust. For a bench beside a busy door with large dogs, the workshop suggests outdoor fabric for extra toughness.

### Should a seat cushion and its backrest be ordered together?

It is the safest route. One order means one fabric cut at the same time, so the pair reads as one upholstered piece. A matching back can still be added later if you give the original fabric code.

### Are the covers on a seat-and-back bench set washable?

Ask for zippered covers and they are. The workshop makes them removable and washable, which is worth it on any bench that sees coffee, children or muddy paws.
