# Striped outdoor chair cushions with ties, seen from ten feet and from ten inches

*Six black chairs, one teak table, and all the color in the seat pads. What reads from the door, what only shows up close, and why the ties matter more than either.*

> **The quick answer:** Outdoor chair cushions with ties stay put when the ties sit exactly at the chair’s back posts, and striped pads read best from across a deck when every stripe runs front to back. Ties are an add-on, so name them in your order note, and tell the maker where your posts are.

## Ten feet from the sliding door: six striped chair pads

Stand at the sliding door and you see one thing: color. Six black chairs, a teak table, brown deck boards. Every bit of cheer out there comes from six striped chair pads.

From ten feet the stripes do the work. Cream, teal, tangerine, mustard and olive run front to back on every pad, so when the chairs are pushed in the lines march across the table like flags on a row of moorings. Turn one pad sideways and the whole row looks wrong. Nobody could tell you why. They would just know.

The light is flat and overcast. That is the honest light, with no sun to flatter a color. A stripe that reads well under a gray sky will read well in July.

Now walk up close. Each pad is tied at the back posts, and on smooth metal slats that matters: a loose pad slides forward every time someone stands. The piping is cut from the same stripe, a tidy edge without a sixth color. The terracotta bowl of succulents sits low and earthy, calming the table under all that stripe. The stoneware plates stay plain for the same reason, and the vinyl siding and green shrubs behind keep out of the way.

The [dining chair cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/dining-chair-cushions/) here are cut in [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), and the ties are placed by the chair, not by habit. The notes on [where cushion ties go on chairs and swings](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-tie-placement-chairs-swings/) and the [farmhouse chair cushions with ties](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/farmhouse-chair-cushions-with-ties/) show the same rule indoors. Where do the back posts sit on your chairs, at the corners or set in?

## Pinned by Callum: the deck in five points

Five points on the deck, from the stripe you see first to the tie you never notice.

1. **Multi-stripe pad**: Stripes run front to back so they line up across the table when chairs are tucked in.
2. **Ties at back post**: Fabric ties wrap the back posts so the pad can't slide forward on smooth metal.
3. **Striped piping**: Same-fabric piping gives a tidy edge without adding another color.
4. **Succulent centerpiece**: Earthy terracotta keeps the table setting calm against bright stripes.
5. **Composite deck**: Plain brown boards let the color come entirely from the cushions.

## Ten feet versus ten inches

The same six pads, read twice: once from the door, once from a chair.

| Detail | From the sliding door | At the table |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe direction | Rows line up across the table when chairs are tucked in | One pad turned sideways breaks the row |
| Piping | Invisible; the edge just looks finished | A welt cut from the same stripe, no extra color |
| Ties | Not seen at all | Wrapped at the back posts so the pad can’t slide on metal |
| Color | Five colors read as one cheerful band | A cream ground keeps the brights apart |
| Table | Teak and terracotta, warm and low | Plain stoneware, nothing patterned |

## Four oak chairs and the ties nobody asked for

A buyer got in touch about their parents’ golden oak dining chairs, now standing on a new gray terrazzo floor. They wanted four thick cushions, 2 in (5 cm), piped, in a printed chenille. The pattern was confirmed with the workshop's craftsmen before cutting.

A matching entry bench, about 38 × 14.5 in (97 × 37 cm), was planned in the same cloth. Then the buyer thought about the two boxer dogs and switched the bench to a rugged outdoor fabric. Good call. Rain doesn’t negotiate, and neither do boxers.

The chair cushions arrived without ties. Nobody had asked for them, so none were sewn. The workshop offered to pay half of a local tailor’s fee to add them. Ties are an add-on, friend. Put them in writing when you order.

## Chair questions

**A common question:** I have horseshoe-shaped chairs. Can you make cushions that follow the curve?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a photo of each chair, a simple sketch with measurements (or a template if you have one), the thickness you want and your fabric and color. Photos of the actual chairs help get the curved cut-outs right. You then get a quote and a production time.

**A common question:** Can you replace the seat and back cushions on our nursery armchair, 5 inches thick?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One nursery chair took a 20 × 22 × 5 in seat and a 21 × 27 × 5 in back, filled with fiber and silicone balls for comfort. Cushions thicker than 5 in can be made too.

**A common question:** I’m ordering a bench cushion. Can the chair cushions match it, with ties?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Chair cushions with ties can be made in exactly the same fabric as the bench. Send all the sizes and mention the set when you order, so the pieces are kept together.

> **Tailor's margin:** Chair pad ties go where your chair’s back posts are, not at the corners by default. Measure post to post and write it on the order.

## On the cutting table: the deck chair pads

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Outdoor dining chair pad, box edge |
| Fabric | Multi-stripe outdoor acrylic: cream, teal, tangerine, mustard, olive |
| Stripe | Runs front to back on every pad |
| Piping | Self piping cut from the same stripe |
| Fastening | Fabric ties at the back posts |
| Chairs | Black metal slat-back, smooth seats |
| Order note | Post positions and “with ties,” in the order note |
| Best for | Deck and patio dining, metal or teak chairs |

## Questions buyers ask next

### Do outdoor chair pads need piping?

Not always, but a welt cut from the same fabric gives a tidy, firm edge without adding a color. On a busy stripe it keeps the outline neat when you see the table from across the deck.

### Why do cushions slide on metal patio chairs?

Smooth metal slats give the underside of a pad nothing to grip, so a loose cushion slides forward each time someone stands up. Ties wrapped around the back posts hold it in place.

### Is overcast daylight good for judging outdoor fabric color?

It is the most honest light. Flat daylight shows a fabric without the warm flattery of low sun, so a stripe that looks right under a gray sky will still look right in high summer.

### Can a printed pattern be placed the same way on every chair seat?

Ask for it in your order note. For one set of four oak chair cushions in a printed chenille, the pattern was confirmed with the craftsmen before cutting, so every seat matched.
