# A garden bench cushion with tape ties that gets the build right

*Shot low from the end of a teak bench, this photo is about construction, not scenery. The welt and the ties tell you whether a cushion will still be there after the first squall.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion for a garden bench needs three things this one has: ties that wrap the frame, a welt that outlines the box, and a pattern busy enough to hide garden grime. Flat herringbone tape grips better than round cord, and a turquoise welt picked from one thread of the stripe adds no new color.

## Read from the low end of the bench

Most bench photos sell you the view. This one crouches at the end of a weathered teak bench and shows you the build, which is where a [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) either holds or lets go.

Start with the ties. Flat turquoise herringbone tape, wrapped round the bench frame. Not round cord. Tape lies flat, grips the wood and doesn't dig into the cushion when someone drops onto it after an hour of weeding. Wrapped round the frame, it stops the cushion sliding sideways off the end. On a bench that lives outdoors, that's half the job. The options are laid out in [how to stop a bench cushion sliding](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/).

Then the welt. Turquoise again, picked from a single thread of the stripe and run round the box. It sharpens the outline without adding a color, and it matches the tape, so the fastenings look designed rather than tacked on afterward.

The fabric pulls its weight too. A fine multicolored stripe crossed with white branch lines breaks up a long flat run and hides the pollen and grit a garden bench collects. Silvered teak lets the turquoise, orange and cobalt carry the frame. Hostas, ferns, lavender, a stone urn and the flagstone path are soft gray-greens that stay out of the cushion's way. More sets like it live under [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) and in the [outdoor fabric family](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/).

The sky is overcast. Good. Gray-sky light is honest light, and if a color works under it, it works. Rain doesn't negotiate, mind, so bring the cushion under cover when weather rolls in. How long is your bench, friend, and what will the ties wrap around?

## Pinned by Callum: five points along the teak

Five pins from the silvered post to the tape wrapped under the frame, read low from the end of the bench.

1. **White branch-line pattern**: White branch lines over fine stripes break up the long bench surface.
2. **Turquoise box welt**: Turquoise welting picks one thread from the stripe and outlines the box.
3. **Herringbone tape tie**: Flat tape grips better than cord and does not dig into the cushion.
4. **Tie round the frame**: Ties wrap the bench frame, so the cushion cannot slide sideways.
5. **Silvered teak post**: Gray weathered wood lets the bright colors carry the scene.

## Four garden bench mistakes this cushion avoids

- ✗ Round cord ties. Flat tape grips the frame better and doesn't dig into the cushion.
- ✗ Ties with nothing to wrap. Check the bench has a rail or leg at every tie point before you order.
- ✗ A welt in a brand-new color. Take one thread from the pattern instead, as the turquoise does here.
- ✗ A pale solid in the flower beds. A busy stripe forgives pollen, drips and grit.

## Three straight edges and one angled side

A buyer in the US needed a cushion with three straight edges and one angled side. They sent photos of the spot and drawings of the shape. The shop said it was easy to make, a custom 4 1/2 in (11.4 cm) thickness included, and told them to select a depth of 29 in (74 cm) and a length of 53 in (135 cm) when ordering.

In the end the buyer chose the standard 4 in (10 cm) and asked for piping in the same fabric as the body. The shop confirmed that was fine.

Short lesson. A clear drawing plus a photo of the space makes an odd angle as plain a job as a rectangle. The mistake is sending neither. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) and the notes on [drawing a custom shape](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-shape-cushion-drawing/) will get you there.

## On the cutting table: the teak garden bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Garden bench cushion, boxed |
| Fabric | Fine multicolored stripe crossed with white branch lines |
| Colors | Turquoise, orange, cobalt, white |
| Welt | Contrast turquoise, drawn from one thread of the stripe |
| Fastening | Flat herringbone tape ties wrapped round the frame |
| Bench | Weathered teak, silvered gray |
| Setting | Flagstone path with hostas, ferns and lavender |
| Check first | A rail or leg to wrap at every tie point |
| Best for | Garden and patio benches, brought under cover before rain and frost |

## Buyer questions: piping shades, hard use and long freight

**A common question:** I can't picture a light beige cushion with darker piping. Do you have a photo of that combination?

**The workshop's answer:** If there's no finished photo of that exact pair, the shop sends a photo of the two fabrics side by side. Its view: a light cover with darker piping looks very elegant, because the piping traces the cushion's shape without being loud.

**A common question:** What foam and lead time would you use for a bench that gets hard daily use, like a clinic waiting area?

**The workshop's answer:** For commercial seating the shop uses premium high-density foam, its 32 DNS grade. Ask for the production time in writing with the quote. It can make L-shaped runs with curved or rounded ends, match specific colors and quote an optional second set of covers.

**A common question:** Why does shipping make up so much of my quote for a faraway address?

**The workshop's answer:** Long-distance freight is costly, so ask for shipping to be shown in the quote; it can make up a large part of the total. One quote with delivery built in covered four linen cushions, two at 37 3/4 x 23 5/8 in (96 x 60 cm) and two at 37 3/4 x 18 1/8 in (96 x 46 cm), each 4 7/8 in (12.5 cm) thick.

> **Tailor's margin:** Pick the welt color from one thread of a striped fabric: the outline sharpens and no new color enters the scene.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is herringbone tape or round cord better for tying a cushion to a teak bench?

Tape, where you can. Flat herringbone tape grips a wooden frame and lies flat against the cushion, while round cord can dig in. Matching the tape to the welt makes the ties look planned rather than added.

### Can a garden bench cushion stay outside through winter?

Not these. The cushions do well on covered porches or when stored for winter, but the workshop says plainly they are not made to sit uncovered through rain and snow. Store them dry once the season turns.

### What thickness suits a cushion on a teak garden bench?

The standard 4 in (10 cm) is what the buyer with the angled bench chose in the end. Custom thicknesses such as 4 1/2 in (11.4 cm) can be made if your bench or backrest calls for them.

### What should I send for a bench cushion with one slanted end?

A drawing with every edge length and a photo of the space. With both in hand, the shop treats an angled bench like a rectangle; a 29 x 53 in (74 x 135 cm) cushion with one slanted side was straightforward.
