# A letter about a moss green window seat cushion that stays put

*Rosa writes about a white built-in with brass pulls, a garden view, and the question nobody asks until the cushion slides: how does it hold on?*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion on a built-in drawer base like this one rarely needs ties: there are no spindles or rails to tie to, so a non-slip base stops the forward creep and a zipper along the back edge stays out of sight. Mustard gold piping repeats the brass cup pulls, tying fabric to hardware.

## Dear neighbor, about the green seat under the garden window

Of all the questions that cross our table, the one nobody asks until the cushion arrives is this: what keeps it on the seat? It matters the first time somebody sits down with a coffee and the whole thing creeps toward the edge.

So let me read you this photograph the way I'd read a front porch. The seat is a white Shaker built-in with drawers and brass cup pulls, under a window that looks straight out on the garden. On top sits a moss green [window seat cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) in a [linen-look weave](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/), a box cut a little under half the height of one drawer front. Any taller would crowd the sill and its stacks of cloth-bound books; any thinner would read as a placemat.

The mustard gold piping is the clever part. It runs the top and bottom seams and repeats the brass pulls just below, and the gilt on the book spines too, so fabric, hardware and books speak one warm language. Can't settle on a piping color? Look at your drawer pulls before the fabric chart.

Soft overcast daylight keeps moss green gentle instead of drab. One cognac leather lumbar gives smooth, warm contrast to the textured weave, the gray knit pillow cools it back down, and the oatmeal fringed throw hangs over the end to soften that hard cabinet corner. The botanical print in its oak frame carries the garden indoors. Nothing fussy. It looks like somebody actually reads there.

## Pinned by Rosa: five spots on the garden window seat

Five pins follow the seat from the moss green top down to the brass pull that chose the piping color.

1. **Moss green seat**: The box depth is a little under half a drawer front, enough to sit on without crowding the sill.
2. **Mustard gold piping**: Gold piping picks up the brass pulls below, tying fabric to hardware.
3. **Cognac leather lumbar**: Smooth leather gives a warm contrast to the textured weave of the seat.
4. **Oatmeal throw**: Draping the throw over the end softens the hard cabinet corner.
5. **Brass cup pull**: The hardware finish is the clue for piping color: match the cord to the metal.

## Ties, grips and zippers on a solid built-in

Here's how I'd fasten this one, and why.

- **Ties:** skip them. Ties need something to wrap around, like chair spindles or a swing slat. A painted drawer base offers nothing, and a tie with nowhere to go ends up tucked underneath making a lump.
- **Non-slip base:** yes. Painted wood is slick, and readers slide forward as they settle in. A grippy underside keeps the front piping lined up with the cabinet edge. See [how to stop a bench cushion sliding](https://cushionguide.com/guides/stop-bench-cushion-sliding-ties-nonslip/).
- **Zipper:** along the back edge, against the window wall, where no guest will see it. The front edge belongs to the piping. More on [cushion zipper placement](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-zipper-placement/).
- **Handles:** leave them off. On a seat you never lift to reach storage, a handle just snags socks.

Drawers settle the question: nobody lifts this cushion to fetch a blanket, so it can sit down and stay down. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and a seat that doesn't slide passes their test. What sits under your window seat, drawers or a lid?

## A 105-inch bench, one piece, and a drawing redrawn

A buyer once sent the workshop a plan that looked like it came straight off an architect's screen: a CAD drawing of a bench about 104 3/4 in (266 cm) long and 19 7/8 to 20 in (50.5 to 51 cm) deep, with stepped returns and curved front corners.

The shop was straight with them: one piece that long, with steps and curves, is harder to make and might cost more than sections. The buyer wanted one piece anyway. So the shop asked for a hand drawing marking where each curve starts, then redrew its own diagram from the CAD plan for the buyer to confirm before any quote went out.

That redraw is the best habit in this trade. When the maker draws your seat and you sign off, misreadings get caught on paper instead of in foam. Write your fastenings on that drawing too: which edge gets the zipper, and whether you want a non-slip base.

## Buyer questions: odd sizes, angled ends, slimmer seats

**A common question:** The window seat size I need isn't in the dropdown. How do I order it?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the nearest listed size and the cushion is made to your exact numbers; a 46 x 22 in (117 x 56 cm) seat went through the 20 x 48 in option. Or ask, and the shop adds your size as its own option, as it has for 36 x 72 in. Extras like handles can be left off.

**A common question:** Our bay seat has angled ends, not square ones. Which listing do I order from?

**The workshop's answer:** The trapezoid listing. In Add Personalization, upload a drawing with every edge measured plus a photo of the seat; a hand sketch is fine. An angled shape ordered on the rectangle listing gets canceled and refunded so you can reorder.

**A common question:** Do your cushions only come 4 inches thick? I'd like something slimmer, maybe 2 inches.

**The workshop's answer:** Four thicknesses are standard: 2, 3, 4 and 5 in (5 to 12.5 cm). Pick it in the thickness option or in Add Personalization. The listing photos show 4 in (10 cm) cushions, and most buyers choose 3 or 4 in.

## On the cutting table: the moss green window seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Box window seat cushion, made to measure |
| Fabric | Linen-look weave in moss green |
| Piping | Contrast piping in mustard gold, top and bottom seams |
| Thickness | 2, 3, 4 or 5 in (5 to 12.5 cm) standard |
| Fastening | Non-slip base; no ties on a solid built-in |
| Zipper | Back edge, against the window wall |
| Handles | Left off |
| Best for | Garden-facing window seats and reading nooks on drawer bases |

> A window seat cushion on a solid drawer base needs no ties: put a non-slip base underneath and the zipper on the back edge, against the wall.

> **Tailor's margin:** Choose piping from your hardware, not the chart: mustard gold cord beside brass cup pulls reads as one idea, not two.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does a window seat cushion on a painted drawer base need ties at all?

Usually not. Ties need something to wrap around, such as spindles, slats or a frame rail. A solid painted base offers nothing to hold, so a non-slip underside keeps the cushion from creeping forward.

### On a built-in window seat with drawers, which edge should carry the zipper?

The back edge, facing the window wall. It stays hidden, the front keeps an unbroken piping line, and the cover still comes off for washing.

### How do I choose a piping color for a moss green window seat cushion?

Look at the metal in the room first. Brass hardware suggests mustard or antique gold piping; nickel or chrome points toward gray. Matching cord to hardware ties the cushion to the cabinet.

### What should I mark on a drawing of a bench with curved front corners?

Overall length, depth at each end, every step or return, and the point where each curve begins. Then approve the maker's redrawn version before anything is cut.
