# A moss green corduroy window seat cushion, and the firm foam under a garden view

*Rosa writes a letter from a glazed corner full of morning light, about what belongs inside a window seat that gets read on, napped on and climbed on.*

> **The quick answer:** A window seat cushion on a drawer base needs a firm, box-cut foam block, because the hard top gives nothing back and the cushion carries all the comfort. On this moss green corduroy seat the edge stays square with no piping at all, and that takes a firm core; soft foam would let the front round off.

## A letter from the green corner

Dear neighbor,

Every house has one seat the whole family fights over, and in this one it is the window seat. A moss green corduroy window seat cushion on white drawers, tucked into a glazed corner that looks out on a cottage garden in full flower. I would fight for it too.

Let me tell you what is under that corduroy, because it is the part nobody sees and everybody feels. A window seat sits on a hard top: painted boards over drawers with brass cup pulls. Wood gives nothing back. So the cushion does all the work, and that means a firm foam block, cut as a box, deep enough that your hip never meets the board when you curl up sideways with a book.

Look at the front edge. There is no piping on this cushion. Without a welt to hold the line, the box shape comes from the foam alone. Soft foam would round that edge under a season of knees and elbows. Firm foam keeps it square, and a square edge is what makes a built-in look built-in.

Firm does not mean hard. The corduroy wale gives a soft hand on top, and the pillows do the rest. The cream sherpa-boucle ball pillow breaks up all those straight lines, the mullions and the drawer fronts. The charcoal linen square is the one dark note that keeps a pale sunroom from looking washed out. A cream pillow tucked behind fills the corner. The white bud vase with its dried stem sits at the far end to balance the pillows at the near end, and the olive tree and a little herb in terracotta stand on the flagstones below.

The color came from outside. Moss green one shade deeper than the leaves, so in bright morning light the window and the seat read as one green band. The brass pulls pick up the pink and gold of the garden. Kids and dogs are the real quality control, and a mid-tone green forgives muddy paws far better than cream.

The cushion runs wall to wall into the corner, the other half of comfort: no gap to lose a phone in. Try the [foam firmness finder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/foam-firmness-finder/), read the [window seat cushion thickness pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/window-seat-cushion-thickness/), and browse the [corduroy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/). What does your family do on your window seat, read or nap?

## Pinned by Rosa

Follow the pins from the moss cord seat to the boucle ball pillow, the charcoal linen square, the bud vase and one brass cup pull.

1. **Moss cord seat**: One shade deeper than the leaves outside so it holds in bright light.
2. **Boucle ball pillow**: A round shape breaks the grid of mullions and drawer fronts.
3. **Charcoal linen pillow**: The single dark note that keeps a pale sunroom from looking washed out.
4. **Ceramic bud vase**: Placed at the far end to balance the pillows at the near end.
5. **Brass cup pull**: Warm metal repeats the pink and gold of the garden beyond.

## The bench that came with a CAD plan

A buyer wrote in with a proper CAD plan, the kind an architect draws, for a long stepped bench: about 104 3/4 in (266 cm) overall and about 20 in (50.5 to 51 cm) deep, with stepped returns and curved front corners.

The workshop told them straight that one piece would be harder to make and might cost more than sections. They wanted one piece anyway, and it was their bench. So the workshop asked for a hand drawing marking exactly where each curve starts, then redrew its own diagram from their plan and sent it back to be confirmed before quoting a thing.

That redraw is the cheapest insurance in upholstery: it catches a misread line before any foam is cut. The [custom shape drawing pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-shape-cushion-drawing/) and [rounded corner measuring](https://cushionguide.com/guides/rounded-corner-cushion-measuring/) show how to mark your own. Window seats of every shape live in the [window seat cushions atlas](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/).

## On the cutting table: the moss window seat

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Box-edge window seat cushion |
| Fabric | Moss green corduroy |
| Piping | None; the foam holds the edge |
| Base | White drawer unit with brass cup pulls |
| Core | Firm foam block, cut as a box |
| Fit | Wall to wall into the glazed corner |
| Curved corners | Drawn with the start of each curve marked |
| Long benches | One piece possible; sections are easier to make |
| Best for | Sunroom seats for reading and napping |

## Buyer questions: a notched L, a shipping charge and a broken zipper

**A common question:** Can you make an L-shaped bench cushion with a notch cut out of one corner?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a photo of the space along with the sizes. One kitchen bench set was an 85.4 x 19.7 in (217 x 50 cm) cushion, a 27.6 x 19.7 in (70 x 50 cm) L-piece with a 4.3 x 20.9 in (11 x 53 cm) cutout, and five 11.8 x 19.7 in (30 x 50 cm) back cushions.

**A common question:** Shipping added more than I expected at checkout. Is there any give?

**The workshop's answer:** Sometimes. The workshop can adjust the shipping charge on request; for one window seat cushion it cut the charge to the lowest rate possible for a parcel that size.

**A common question:** The cushion fits perfectly, but the zipper arrived broken. Can I get my money back?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop did better than a refund: it made and shipped a brand-new set of covers free of charge, so the cushion that fit could stay.

> **Tailor's margin:** Choose the cushion color one shade deeper than the leaves outside the window, so it holds its own in bright morning light.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How firm should a window seat cushion on drawers be?

Firm enough that your hip never touches the board when you sit sideways, and firm enough to hold a square front edge. A window seat on a hard top gets no help from springs, so the foam carries everything.

### Does a window seat cushion need piping?

No. Without piping the box edge comes from the foam alone, which gives a softer, built-in look, as on this moss corduroy seat. Piping adds a drawn line around the shape; leaving it off lets the fabric and the square edge speak.

### What color suits a window seat that faces a garden?

Take it from the leaves outside and go one shade deeper, so the cushion holds its own in strong light. Here moss green corduroy and the foliage beyond read as one band of green from inside the room.

### Is a long bench cushion better in one piece or in sections?

Sections are easier to make and handle; one piece looks unbroken but is harder and can cost more. On a 104 3/4 in (266 cm) stepped bench, the buyer chose one piece after signing off a redrawn diagram.
