# A mocha trapezoid bench cushion with teal piping, seen from the doorway and from the seat

*Two readings of one bay seat: what survives ten feet of distance, what only shows at arm's length, and the numbers behind a very large angled bench.*

> **The quick answer:** From ten feet, a trapezoid bench cushion reads as outline and color: here a teal welt draws the mocha seat against white cabinetry. Up close, texture takes over: knit and linen pillows, the throw, the tray. To order an angled bench, use the front edge as the length and the depth as the width, then upload a drawing with every side.

## Pinned by Nate

Five pins, placed where the eye lands first from across the room and last from the seat itself.

1. **Teal piping**: A cool teal welt lifts the brown seat and connects it to the garden greens.
2. **Knit cream pillow**: Nubbly cream texture stops a mid-brown seat from looking heavy.
3. **Ivory lumbar**: Set in front of two squares, the lumbar adds depth to the back row.
4. **Throw on the angle**: The throw dresses the angled end and hides where the cushion meets the corner.
5. **Wooden tray**: An empty tray waits for a cup, giving the seat a side-table job.

## From ten feet: one teal line around a brown shape

Stand at the far side of the room and most of this photograph disappears. What survives is shape and contrast: a mocha linen-look cushion on a white storage bench, cut as a trapezoid to fit the bay, with a teal welt tracing every edge.

That welt is doing structural work, partner. Mid-brown on white cabinetry could look heavy, a dark slab with soft corners. A cool teal line sharpens the silhouette and links the seat to the hydrangeas and the cedar fence outside. Angles are just lengths in disguise, and contrast piping is how you show those lengths from across a room.

Walk closer and the texture arrives. Three cream pillows line the back, each a different weave, one of them a nubbly knit that keeps the brown from feeling heavy. An ivory linen lumbar sits in front of two of them and adds depth to the row. The oatmeal throw dresses the angled end and hides where the cushion meets the corner. An empty oval tray waits beside two stacked books and a mug on a coaster, which gives the seat a side-table job. Brass bar pulls on the bench and a jute rug below keep the warm half of the palette going.

Which view matters more in your room, the one from the doorway or the one from the seat? The [trapezoid cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/trapezoid-cushions/) collection has both kinds, and the fabric is under [linen-look fabrics](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/).

## Ten feet versus arm's length

| Detail | From ten feet | From the seat |
|---|---|---|
| Teal piping | Draws the trapezoid in one line | A thin, cool welt on a warm weave |
| Mocha cushion | A dark block against white cabinetry | Linen-look slub and a box edge |
| Cream pillows | One pale band along the back | Three different weaves, one a knit |
| Oatmeal throw | Softens the angled end | Hides where the cushion meets the corner |
| Tray and mug | Barely there | A place to set the cup down |

## The 110-inch bench that had to be ready for a housewarming

A buyer in the US needed one large angled-top bench cushion before a housewarming early the following month. The numbers: 110 in (279 cm) across the front, 55 in (140 cm) at the back, 31.75 in (81 cm) deep, 38.5 in (98 cm) angled sides, 5 in (13 cm) corners and one extra 3.5 in (9 cm) angled segment.

The shop's instructions were short. Use the front as the length and the depth for the size selection, then upload the drawing at checkout. With a small dog and a toddler at home, it steered the buyer away from 100% cotton stripes toward its washable linen, soft and velvet ranges. And because the bench sits beside a table, the buyer chose a thinner 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm) cushion so the seat height still suited the table.

Every side on one drawing, no guessing. The [trapezoid cushion calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) is a good place to rehearse numbers like these.

## Buyer questions: your own fabric, a flat arrival, an L with a notch

**A common question:** Can I send you my own fabric for the cushions?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. You can post your own fabric to the workshop and the cushions are made from it; the shop asks what the fabric is first. One buyer did this for three mattress-style cushions of about 46.5 x 24.75 x 4 in (118 x 63 x 10 cm).

**A common question:** My cushion arrived flat and out of shape. Will it come back?

**The workshop's answer:** Cushions are tightly vacuum-packed, so they often look flattened on arrival. They usually regain full shape within 24-48 hours; for one opened that same day, the shop advised allowing 3-5 days. If it does not recover, send photos or a video.

**A common question:** Can you make an L-shaped kitchen bench cushion with a cutout in one corner?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send a picture of the space with the sizes. One kitchen set was quoted as an 85.5 x 19.75 in (217 x 50 cm) cushion, a 27.5 x 19.75 in (70 x 50 cm) L-piece with a 4.25 x 20.75 in (11 x 53 cm) cutout, and five 11.75 x 19.75 in (30 x 50 cm) back cushions.

> On a trapezoid bench cushion, contrast piping is the detail that still reads from ten feet: one teal welt draws every side of the shape.

> **Tailor's margin:** Next to a table, go thinner. One angled bench from a past order used a 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm) cushion so the seat height still suited the table.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Which cushion details show from across a room?

Outline and color blocks: contrast piping, the cushion color against the cabinetry, and the row of pillows. Weave, slub and knit texture only show within arm's length, so choose those for how the seat feels rather than how it photographs.

### How do I measure a trapezoid bench with short corner cuts?

Measure the front, the back, the depth and every angled side, including short corner cuts. One bench from a past order had 5 in (13 cm) corners and an extra 3.5 in (9 cm) segment. Write each number on a drawing and upload it.

### Is teal piping too strong on a brown cushion?

On mid-brown it sharpens the outline rather than shouting, because it is a thin line. A cool welt on a warm fabric suits a seat meant to be read from across the room, especially when something green outside repeats it.
