# Before and after: one mocha marbled cushion on a glasshouse teak bench

*Callum reads a gray teak bench among ferns and geraniums, and the single outdoor cushion that turned it from something to look at into somewhere to sit.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion for a glasshouse or sunroom works best as a box pad about 3¼ in (8 cm) thick, cut snug between the arms, in a mottled outdoor acrylic that hides soil, pollen and water spots. Measure between the arms at the front and at the back of the seat, because older benches often differ by 3/8 to 3/4 in (1 to 2 cm).

## Before: a silver bench nobody sat on

A bare teak bench in a glasshouse is a sculpture. Handsome to look at, cold to sit on, and ridged by every slat.

Picture this corner before. Weathered gray teak, white arched glazing bars, terracotta floor tiles, a wall of ferns. The eye slides right past the bench to the green. Nobody lingers on a seat that bites the backs of the knees.

Now the after. One [custom bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) in a mocha and cream marbled [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), a box about 3¼ in (8 cm) deep, fitted snug between the arms. Add a cream pillow and a knit throw, then stop. The bench became a seat.

That is a makeover done around one cushion. Change what people touch, leave the room alone, and watch where they sit.

## Pinned by Callum: five marks on the glasshouse bench cushion

Five pins run from the marbled seat pad out to the fern and the geraniums that do the coloring for it.

1. **Marbled taupe seat pad**: A mottled mocha print disguises soil and pollen, which settle on anything in a glasshouse.
2. **Cream pillow**: Set at one end only so the teak slats still show along most of the back.
3. **Draped knit throw**: Cream knit over the backrest softens the gray teak and repeats the pillow tone.
4. **Pink geraniums**: A small hit of pink keeps the brown-and-green palette from going muddy.
5. **Boston fern**: Big foliage behind a neutral cushion supplies the color, so the fabric does not have to.

## Why mocha marble beats plain cream under glass

A glasshouse is a [sunroom](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/sunroom-cushions/) with the weather left in, friend. Humid air, a dripping watering can, soil on boots, pollen drifting off the star jasmine on the glazing bars. All of it lands on the seat. A plain cream pad would show every mark by midsummer. The marbled mocha is camouflage.

The light does the rest. Diffused daylight under glass makes greens loud and browns warm, so the fabric stays quiet and lets the fern and the monstera carry the color. A terracotta pot of pink geraniums at the far end keeps brown and green from going muddy.

Each prop has a job. The cream linen pillow sits at one end only, so most of the teak back still shows. The knit throw over the backrest softens the silvered wood and repeats the pillow's cream. Self piping keeps the edge in the same mottled cloth, so the box reads as one calm slab. Our notes on [sunroom fabric and humidity](https://cushionguide.com/guides/sunroom-cushion-fabric-humidity/) cover life under glass.

What sits in your sunroom that nobody sits on?

## A 74-inch window seat with a handle in the way

A buyer in the US drew the workshop a trapezoid window seat, 74 in (188 cm) long and 24 in (61 cm) deep. Good drawing, one gap: the two side edges had no numbers. The workshop asked for them before anything else.

Then she did something smart. The window handle hung low enough to foul the cushion, so she marked its position on the drawing as a cut-out. The full drawing, cut-out and all, went in with the order.

A glasshouse bench has the same kind of trouble: a heating pipe, a post, a door stop. Mark it on the drawing and the cushion gets cut around it. The Pattern on [notched cushion cut-outs](https://cushionguide.com/guides/notched-cushion-cutouts-posts-casings/) shows how to measure one.

## Buyer questions: full totals, two sizes, one corner

**A common question:** Is the quote for a 24 x 64 inch beige bench cushion the whole cost, or does shipping come on top?

**The workshop's answer:** In that case the quoted figure was the full bill, fees and shipping in it; each quote states its own shipping cost, so check that line before paying. Making and delivery together took 10 to 12 days for that 24 x 64 in (61 x 163 cm) cushion.

**A common question:** I need two window seat cushions in slightly different sizes. How do I order both?

**The workshop's answer:** Send each size, fractions and all, such as 19 3/8 x 75 5/8 in and 19 7/8 x 72 1/2 in (49 x 192 cm and 50.5 x 184 cm), with a photo or link of the style you want. The workshop then builds a custom order link for the pair.

**A common question:** Our bench runs into a short wall section at the corner. Can you make a cushion for that spot?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop asked for a photo of the corner before quoting. In the end the buyer chose one straight 16 x 65 in (41 x 165 cm) cushion in the single-button style, ordered from the listing by picking that size.

> **Tailor's margin:** On an old garden bench, measure between the arms at the front and the back. The two numbers are often 3/8 to 3/4 in (1 to 2 cm) apart.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What thickness suits a cushion on a slatted teak garden bench?

About 3¼ in (8 cm) covers the slats without hiding the frame, as on this glasshouse bench. Much thicker pads raise the seat and crowd the arms; much thinner ones let you feel every slat.

### Why choose a patterned fabric for a bench in a sunroom or glasshouse?

Under glass, soil, pollen and water drops land on every surface. A mottled or marbled print hides those marks between cleanings far better than a plain pale cloth, and it still reads as a neutral.

### Should a garden bench cushion fill the whole gap between the arms?

Yes, fitted snugly. A pad that fills the gap stays put without rubbing the teak each time someone sits. Measure at the front and the back of the seat and send both figures so the cut follows the bench.
