# Malachite green in the glasshouse: a custom bench cushion built like outdoor gear

*A glasshouse is weather with a roof on. Callum reads a green bench among the ferns, and the living-room order that taught him how to choose it.*

> **The quick answer:** For a bench in an orangery or sunroom, choose an outdoor weave one shade darker than the leaves, over high-density foam. The deep green sits inside the planting instead of fighting it, and the outdoor fabric copes with daily watering and damp air. For a seat that will not sag, the workshop specifies about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) foam with a Dacron wrap.

## Weather with a roof on

A glasshouse is the only room where you water the furniture. Every morning the can goes round, the glass sweats, and the brick floor stays damp till noon. A bench cushion in here lives an outdoor life indoors.

So this one is cut from an outdoor weave: malachite green, marbled deep and light, on a box-edged seat with self piping over a weathered teak bench. It comes from the [outdoor acrylic family](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), cloth meant to shrug off damp rather than drink it.

The color does the other half of the work. It is one shade darker than the ferns, so the bench sits inside the planting like a stone in a stream. Go lighter than the leaves and the cushion floats. Go darker and it anchors.

A cream pillow at the far end keeps all that green from feeling heavy. Leather-bound books with a brass bell, an open book with a pressed fern, a lemon tree in terracotta, a pot of rosemary, green glazed jugs on a turned side table and climbing jasmine all say Victorian plant room. The galvanized watering can says somebody actually works in here.

## Pinned by Callum: seat, pillow, fern and can

Five pins walk the bench from the malachite seat to the cream pillow and the pressed fern, then out to the iron plant stand and the watering can on the brick.

1. **malachite green cushion**: Deep marbled green sits inside the foliage instead of fighting it.
2. **cream pillow**: A pale pillow at the end stops the green from feeling heavy.
3. **pressed fern book**: A pressed fern in an open book repeats the plant-room theme.
4. **fern on iron stand**: Tall ferns frame the bench and give it a Victorian feel.
5. **watering can**: An outdoor weave suits a humid glasshouse where watering is daily.

## The TV-room bench that got mocked up both ways

The thinking behind this bench came from a very different room. A buyer in the US wanted a bench cushion in front of a TV entertainment center, with two conditions: it had to blend with the sofa, and it could not sag.

The workshop wrote the spec plainly. Foam at about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) with a Dacron wrap. A removable cover with the zipper hidden on the underside, washable at 86°F (30°C).

Then the color question. The workshop mocked up two fabrics both ways round: one as the body with the other as piping, then reversed. Side by side, the answer was plain. The buyer chose the rust-toned combination and added a non-slip base.

Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither does a sofa you already own. Mock it up both ways before anyone cuts.

## What the glasshouse took from the living room

Three things carried over.

**Foam that holds.** A bench you perch on to pot up seedlings takes the same beating as one in front of the TV. High-density foam keeps its shape; the wrap softens the edge.

**A cover that comes off.** In a humid room, a zipped cover you can wash beats one you cannot. Soil and water find a seat fast.

**Two colors, tested together.** Here that meant the green against the leaves, and the cream pillow against the green. Look at them side by side in the room's own light before you commit.

For damp rooms, friend, read the [sunroom fabric and humidity Pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/sunroom-cushion-fabric-humidity/) and browse [sunroom cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/sunroom-cushions/). What grows closest to your bench?

## Buyer questions: odd shapes, foam and claws

**A common question:** Could you make a trapezoid window seat cushion with bolsters to match on the angled sides?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send the length of every side plus the seat depth. One seat measured 117 in (297 cm) along the back, 68.5 in (174 cm) at the front and 34 in (86 cm) on each diagonal, with 25.5 in (65 cm) of depth. The cushion was 4 in (10 cm) thick, the bolsters 10 in (25 cm) across, and it can be made without tufting for clean lines.

**A common question:** What density is the foam in your cushions, and will it go lumpy?

**The workshop's answer:** Every cushion uses 32-density high-density foam, typically a cold foam, which works out to about 2 lb/ft³. It is chosen to hold its shape over time without lumps while staying comfortable for everyday sitting.

**A common question:** We have kids, dogs and cats. Which fabric holds up, and will anything survive claws?

**The workshop's answer:** No fabric is completely immune to claws. The workshop's fabrics are tightly woven without loops, and flat, tight weaves snag far less, because claws catch on loops. There is a dedicated pet-friendly performance chart with good taupe and neutral tones. Order swatches so you, and your pets, can test the texture first.

> A bench cushion in a glasshouse should be one shade darker than the ferns around it, so the seat anchors the planting instead of floating in it.

> **Tailor's margin:** Mock up body and piping both ways round before you cut; two fabrics swapped side by side settle the color choice in seconds.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Is an outdoor weave a good idea for a bench inside a glass orangery?

Often it is the better choice. Daily watering, condensation and strong light are closer to outdoor conditions than living-room ones, and an outdoor weave handles damp better than a cotton or a velvet would.

### What cushion color works on a bench surrounded by plants?

Go one shade darker than the leaves around it. A deep green sits inside the planting and anchors the bench; a lighter green floats on top of it. Add one pale pillow so the dark seat does not feel heavy.

### How do I keep a bench cushion from sagging over time?

Start with high-density foam of about 2 lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³), wrapped in Dacron to soften the edges. It holds its shape without going lumpy. Add a non-slip base if the cushion also tends to slide.
