# A light gray corduroy bolster pillow, read from across the room and up close

*Harlan writes a letter about one gray bolster: what you notice from the doorway, what you only find with your thumb, and why both were planned.*

> **The quick answer:** A corduroy bolster pillow reads from across the room as a soft gray roll with a fine stripe, and up close as a grid: the body ribs run lengthwise, the end-cap ribs run across, and a corduroy-covered cord turns the seam into a row of beads. Keep to one pale color so texture carries the detail.

## A letter about a gray bolster

My friend,

I have been looking at one bolster all morning, and I want to tell you about it before the light moves.

It is a roll of light gray wide-wale corduroy lying against the back of a white beadboard daybed, on a pale linen seat cushion. From the doorway, that is all you see. A soft gray shape. A faint stripe along its length. A calm corner of a living room. That is the ten-foot view, and it ought to be quiet. A good bolster does not shout across a room.

Walk closer and it starts to talk. The ribs on the body run the length of the roll. The ribs on the round end cap run across. Where the two meet at the seam they make a small grid, and in that seam sits a cord covered in the same corduroy. Each rib that crosses the cord lifts it a little, so the piping becomes a row of soft beads. Nobody drew those beads with a pencil. They come from cutting the two pieces with the ribs at right angles and closing the seam true. A seam is a promise, and this one keeps it at ten inches and at ten feet.

## Pinned by Harlan

Start at the end cap where the ribs turn, follow the beaded seam, then step back to the linen seat and the beadboard behind.

1. **Ribbed end cap**: The cap's ribs run across while the body's run lengthwise, so the two meet as a grid at the seam.
2. **Beaded corded seam**: Corduroy-covered cord turns into a row of soft beads where each rib crosses the piping.
3. **Lengthwise wale**: Deep wales throw a shadow in every groove, so a single color still looks detailed.
4. **Linen seat cushion**: A flat linen seat in the same pale tone lets texture, not color, carry the scene.
5. **Beadboard backrest**: The painted grooves repeat the corduroy stripe rhythm in a hard material.

## What carries from the doorway, and what waits for your thumb

Here is how the detail travels.

From across the room, the deep wales do the work. Each groove holds a line of shadow, and the cool side light in the photograph is angled to find every one of them. That is why a single pale gray still looks rich from far off. A flat cloth in the same color would read as a gray tube.

At arm's length the seam takes over. The beads catch the light one by one, and the grid at the end cap tells you the cutter paid attention. Closer still, your thumb finds the ridges of the wale and the give of the cord.

The room is arranged so nothing competes. The linen seat is the same pale tone, so texture, not color, carries the scene. The white beadboard behind repeats the corduroy's stripe rhythm in painted wood, hard beside soft. For a calm room, keep to one color and let a deep-wale fabric do the decorating. How far is your daybed from the door you use most?

Wale widths and nap direction are set out in the [corduroy pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/corduroy-cushions-wale-nap-direction/), diameters and lengths in the [bolster size pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bolster-pillow-size-diameter/), and more rolls wait among our [bolster pillows](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bolster-pillows/).

## Covers, or covers with the foam: say which

Old upholsterers learn this one the hard way, and so do buyers. A buyer once ordered from our covers-only listing, a navy corduroy set, believing the whole sofa was on its way. It was the covers alone. Filling them with foam would have cost a good deal more, so the buyer canceled and was refunded, and we rewrote the listing so the next person would not make the same mistake.

A cover is a coat. It needs a body inside it. When you order a bolster, a pillow or a sofa set, say in plain words whether you want covers only, or covers with foam, and for a floor sofa whether the frame comes too.

Covers-only has its place, mind you. It is how you change a color in spring, or dress a secondhand piece in something new.

## Buyer questions: covers, matching pillows and what is inside

**A common question:** Do you sell just the covers, so I can change colors later or re-cover a sofa I bought secondhand?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. There is a covers-only listing for the teddy and modular floor sofas, and the covers suit a sofa bought secondhand. For an L-shaped sofa, order two covers from that listing and the workshop sends the L-shaped set.

**A common question:** Can you make throw pillows or pillow covers in the same fabric as my sofa?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, in any style. Send a reference photo of the pillow you have in mind. One quote was for two 18 x 18 in (46 x 46 cm) covers and one 19 x 19 in (48 x 48 cm) cover in beige teddy fabric to match a sofa.

**A common question:** What foam do you use, and how dense is it?

**The workshop's answer:** Bench cushions use 32-density high-density foam wrapped in Dacron. Modular sofa mattresses use T32 foam at ILD 42, the inner cushions are foam as well, the support bars are steel, and the upholstery fabric is 100% polyester.

> **Tailor's margin:** Cut the bolster end caps with the ribs running across the body ribs. The seam becomes a grid, and the cord a row of beads.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does wide-wale corduroy look richer than a flat fabric in the same pale color?

Each wale ridge casts a thin shadow into the groove beside it. In side light those shadows turn a single pale gray into stripes of light and dark, so the bolster shows detail from across the room without a second color.

### Is a corded seam worth it on the ends of a corduroy bolster?

Yes. A self-covered cord at each end seam holds the round shape of the cap, and where the ribs cross it the cord forms a row of soft beads, a detail that rewards anyone who looks closely.

### Will a pale gray bolster disappear against a white daybed?

Not if the fabric has depth. A pale bolster with deep ribs against white beadboard reads as texture on texture. Keep the seat cushion in the same pale family so the eye follows the grooves, not a change of color.
