# A knotted-stripe bay window cushion, mixed with plain linen and bare oak

*Nate counts the parts in one deep bay: one stripe, two plains, one wood grain, and a cushion cut short on purpose to leave a ledge.*

> **The quick answer:** A striped bay window cushion mixes well when it is the only pattern on the seat: here a black, gray and cream knotted stripe carries the pattern, cream linen and gray pillows stay plain, and the oak ledge supplies texture. Cut the cushion shallower than a deep seat board if you want a strip of bare wood for a mug and a book.

![Knotted black, gray and cream stripe cushion on an oak-topped bay window seat with linen pillows, a mug and an open book](https://cushionguide.com/media/bay-window-cushions/knotted-stripe-bay-window-cushion-oak-ledge-1600.webp "Cut a little shallower than the oak seat board, the cushion leaves a ledge at the front for a mug and a book.")

## Five pins, one stripe

Follow the pins from the knotted stripe to the bare oak ledge, the pillows on the side wall and along the glass, and the street outside.

1. **Knotted stripe seat**: Black, gray and cream knots echo the gray pillow and the pale street light outside.
2. **Oak ledge left free**: The cushion is shallower than the oak top, leaving a strip of bare wood for a mug and a book.
3. **Side-wall pillows**: Pillows against the angled wall let the seat work lengthways as a lounger.
4. **Back pillow row**: Three pillows along the glass make the bay a sofa as well as a perch.
5. **Street view**: The seat faces the window, so the view is part of the design.

## Pattern mixing is a parts list

Pattern mixing goes wrong the way assemblies go wrong: too many parts doing the same job. This bay window cushion gets the count right.

One pattern: the seat, a knotted stripe in black, gray and cream. Two plains: cream linen pillows and gray ones. Textures: oak, a speckled stoneware mug, an open hardback, sheer linen curtains, a painted paneled base and wide pine floorboards. Nothing else is printed. That is why the stripe reads.

The knots echo the gray pillow and the pale street light outside. The oak brings the only warm tone. Take away the oak and the bay goes cold; add a second stripe and it goes noisy.

Now the measuring decision, which is my favorite part. The cushion is cut shallower than the oak seat board on purpose. A strip of bare wood stays free at the front for a mug and a book. In a very deep bay that shelf is worth more than the extra inches of foam.

The pillows are placed as parts too. A few lean against the angled side wall, so you can sit lengthways with your legs along the seat. A row of three along the glass turns the bay into a sofa facing the room. The seat faces the window, so the tree-lined street is part of the design.

Measure your own bay with the [bay window calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bay-window-calculator/) and the [three-sided bay pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/bay-window-seat-cushion-3-sided/). The stripe family lives on the [striped cotton and ticking](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/striped-cotton-and-ticking/) shelf, and more shapes under [bay window cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bay-window-cushions/). How deep is your seat board, and do you want all of it?

## Stripe, plain, texture: who does which job

| Part | Where it sits | Its job |
|---|---|---|
| Knotted stripe | Seat cushion | The single pattern; carries black, gray and cream |
| Cream linen | Side-wall and back pillows | A plain rest for the eye so the stripe reads |
| Gray | Back pillow row | Repeats the stripe's gray without a second pattern |
| Oak grain | Seat board ledge | The only warm tone, and a shelf |
| Sheer linen | Curtains | Softens gray street light on the black knots |
| Speckled stoneware | Mug on the ledge | A small texture that does not compete |

## The 3.5-inch returns that fixed the math

A buyer wrote in with a drawing labeled A to G: C 103 in (262 cm), D 73 in (185 cm) and a depth of 19.25 in (49 cm), with angled sides of 21.5 in (55 cm).

Our check said the angled sides should be closer to 24 in (61 cm). Half of 103 − 73 is 15 in; with a 19.25 in depth, √(15² + 19.25²) ≈ 24.4 in. The buyer explained that the window frame sides stick out, confirmed the numbers and changed the depth to 19 in (48 cm).

On a second look we spotted it: straight sections of 3.5 in (9 cm) at A and B. Take those out of the depth and the angled part spans only 15.5 in. √(15² + 15.5²) ≈ 21.6 in. The buyer's 21.5 in was right all along.

Draw every short straight return. The [bay angle](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#bay-angle) depends on them.

## On the cutting table: the knotted bay

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Bay window seat cushion |
| Fabric | Knotted stripe weave in black, gray and cream |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Edge | Box |
| Depth | Shallower than the oak board, leaving a front ledge |
| Pillows | Cream linen and gray, on the side wall and along the glass |
| Base | Painted paneled seat with an oak top |
| Measure | Every straight return, however short |
| Best for | Deep bays used as lounger and perch |

## Buyer questions: sets, warm shades and an L with one back

**A common question:** Is there a better price if I order several large cushions together, or if I've ordered before?

**The workshop's answer:** Often, yes. Multi-piece sets, such as a large L-shaped pair or four seats with backrests, have been quoted below the sum of their listing prices, and returning buyers have received lower quotes on back cushions and second cover sets.

**A common question:** The cushion looks warmer and more tan than the chart. What can be done?

**The workshop's answer:** The shop checks production records to confirm the fabric code, then explains that chart scans tend to shift warm neutrals cooler while warm indoor light brings warmth out; compare near a window in daylight. Some tone variation between batches is normal. It offered a physical swatch, then a replacement cover in another fabric at production cost, keeping the foam.

**A common question:** Can an L-shaped bench cushion have a back cushion along just one side?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. One L-shaped bench measured 84 x 22 in (213 x 56 cm) and 62.5 x 21.5 in (159 x 55 cm) in sage corduroy 207, quoted with and without a foam wedge backrest along the 84 in side. Standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm), and it can be changed.

> A striped bay window cushion mixes best as the only pattern on the seat; keep the pillows plain linen and let wood grain supply the texture.

> **Tailor's margin:** Draw every straight return on a bay sketch, even 3.5 in (9 cm) ones; they change the length of the angled sides.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Can a striped window seat take a second pattern on the pillows?

It can, with care. Count surfaces, not pillows: one patterned surface plus plains and natural textures is the safe count. A second pattern should share a color with the stripe and sit at a clearly different scale, or the two will fight.

### Why leave part of a deep bay seat board uncovered?

In a very deep bay, a cushion that fills the board can feel like a mattress. Cutting it shallower leaves a strip of bare oak at the front for a mug and a book, and keeps the wood visible as a warm line.

### Does a black and cream stripe look harsh in gray daylight?

It can, which is why the plains around it matter. Here cream linen pillows and sheer curtains soften the contrast, and the oak ledge warms it. In a sunny bay the same stripe reads crisper and needs fewer cool grays.

### How do pillows turn a bay seat into a lounger?

Lean a few against the angled side wall and you can sit lengthways with your legs along the seat. Add a row along the glass and the bay also works as a sofa facing into the room.
