# A jade stripe window seat cushion in a sage country kitchen, read for its edge

*Green on green should not work. It does here, because one green is brighter and cooler than the other, and because the edge is cut square.*

> **The quick answer:** A box-edged window seat cushion cut square to its recess shows a striped fabric at its best: with the stripes running front to back, the tall front band becomes a neat ladder of color. A knife edge has no band, so it loses that ladder. In a kitchen nook, check thickness against the table; one buyer needed 2 in at most.

## Two greens that refuse to blur

The joinery is sage, soft and grayed, the green of a leaf in shade. The stripe is jade, clearer and cooler, alternating with a clean chalk white. Because the two greens differ in strength, tone-on-tone still reads from the doorway. Let one color speak and the others listen.

The light is soft daylight through leaded casements, the kind that flattens bright colors. The jade holds. Beneath it, a worn flagstone floor grounds a fresh stripe in an old kitchen.

The props are kitchen things, and that keeps the scene honest: basil in a terracotta pot on the sill, the only warm note in the frame, and a cream stoneware mixing bowl that echoes the white ground of the stripe.

## Pinned by Élodie: basil, stoneware, stripe and stone

Five spots on the photograph, from the basil on the sill to the flagstones.

1. **potted basil**: Kitchen herbs on the sill keep the styling honest to the room.
2. **stoneware bowl**: A plain bowl in cream stoneware echoes the stripe's white ground.
3. **jade stripe top**: The jade is brighter and cooler than the sage joinery, so tone-on-tone still stands out.
4. **front band ladder**: Stripes run front to back, so the long front band shows a neat ladder of green.
5. **flagstone floor**: Worn stone underfoot grounds a fresh stripe in an old kitchen.

## The edge that makes the ladder

This is a box cushion: a flat top, a flat bottom and a straight side band all the way around, with self piping on the edges. The seat is deep and cut square to the recess.

The stripe runs front to back. Carry it over the top and down the front, and the tall front band becomes a ladder of jade rungs. On a [knife-edge](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#knife-edge) cushion, where top and bottom meet in one seam with no band, that ladder would vanish.

A window seat that is not square asks for a different edge. Angled side walls call for a trapezoid, which the [trapezoid calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/trapezoid-cushion-calculator/) will draw for you. Rounded corners suit a free end people brush past. The [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) pages and the [box edge vs knife edge](https://cushionguide.com/guides/box-edge-vs-knife-edge-cushion/) Pattern go further, and there are more [kitchen nook cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/kitchen-nook-cushions/) to study.

In a kitchen, cotton stripes need washing more often than polyester weaves, so the removable zippered cover earns its keep. Which way does your stripe want to run, toward the window or along it?

## A 96-inch window seat that doubles as a sleepover bed

A buyer got in touch about a window seat 31.5 x 96 in (80 x 243 cm) that would also serve as a bed for sleepovers. They hoped for a black or gray French stripe.

There was no matching stripe, so the talk turned to plain velvet. Then came the part I love, my friends: two yellows side by side. Number 18 was a golden yellow, number 12 a mustard. The buyer chose 12, the less bright of the two.

A strong plain can carry a long seat as well as a stripe can. Only compare the close shades together, in the same daylight, before you decide.

## Kitchen nooks, split seats and covers alone

**A common question:** I never checked the thickness before ordering, and my kitchen nook cushion must be 2 inches at most or my legs hit the table. Can you still change it?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The order was changed to 2 in (5 cm) thick before production started.

**A common question:** Would the price drop if the big cushion were split into two separate pieces?

**The workshop's answer:** No. The price is based on the total size, so two cushions covering the same area cost the same as one.

**A common question:** My window seat is a trapezoid. Can I order only the cover?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send every exact measurement, ideally on a drawing with each side labeled, and the workshop will quote the cover alone.

## On the cutting table: the kitchen window seat

> **Tailor's margin:** In a kitchen nook, check the cushion thickness against the table before you order. One buyer needed 2 in at most so their legs cleared the tabletop.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should window seat stripes run toward the glass or along the front?

Front to back suits most window seats: the front band shows short rungs like a ladder, and the top reads as lines leading to the glass. Side-to-side stripes draw long lines across the front instead. Both work, but decide before you order.

### Box edge or knife edge for a deep window seat?

A box edge for most window seats. Its straight side band holds a square shape in a recess and shows a stripe cleanly. A knife edge, where top and bottom meet in one seam, suits thin pads and chair seats better.

### Is striped cotton practical on a kitchen window seat?

Yes, with a removable zippered cover. In a kitchen, cotton stripes need washing more often than polyester weaves, so being able to take the cover off and wash it is what makes the choice work.

### How should I choose between two close shades of one color?

Ask for swatches of both and hold them together in the same daylight, beside the wood or paint they will live with. One buyer compared a golden yellow and a mustard that way and chose the less bright of the two.
