# Ivory pinstripe deep-seat cushions by the pool, and how to seat a crowd

*Callum answers three buyer questions first, then reads a teak lounge chair in hard midday sun and a lounge-corner order that seated a whole terrace.*

> **The quick answer:** To seat guests well outdoors, pair deep lounge cushions with an outdoor bench cushion and a few chair pads, all in one light outdoor fabric with matching piping. Order firmer seats and softer backs, write every size in one unit system, approve a full spec list, and ask for zipped covers you can wash after a season of sunscreen.

## Buyer questions: outdoor fabric, thinner reorders and a bunk for guests

**A common question:** What outdoor fabrics do you offer, and are they waterproof and UV resistant?

**The workshop's answer:** There are four outdoor fabric charts. The fabrics are water-resistant and UV- and fade-resistant, made to stay outside all summer, and they are soft woven cloth rather than vinyl or a plastic-coated finish. Close-up photos are available for any code.

**A common question:** The cushions sit too high on my chairs. Can I reorder them thinner?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Place the same order again and choose the thinner option on the product page, for example 2 in (5 cm) instead of 4 in (10 cm). One repeat order like that shipped within a couple of days, since nothing had to be measured again.

**A common question:** Could you make cushions for the top bunk in our RV camper?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Two 71 x 28 in (180 x 71 cm) velvet cushions at the pictured 12 in (30 cm) thickness were quoted singly and as a pair, with the pair priced lower. In the velvet chart, #4 is a dark beige and #13 a beige.

## One chair, and the terrace it could seat

A single lounge chair seats one person well. A party needs more than that, and this pool terrace shows where to begin.

The seat cushion is nearly twice the thickness of a dining-chair pad. That depth is what turns a teak frame into a lounge chair you can stay in all afternoon. The back cushion stands tall behind it, and fine taupe pinstripes run top to bottom on the back and carry on down the front of the seat, so the lines stay straight when you face the chair from the water. Self piping keeps each box edge crisp without bringing in a second color.

The colors are picked for hard midday sun and crisp shadows. Ivory and taupe stay cool beside pale limestone, and the teak is the only warm tone in the picture. A stack of white towels folded on a teak side table repeats that ivory-and-wood pairing, a gray geometric outdoor rug anchors the chair on the stone, and olive and evergreen shrubs soften the lime-plastered pool house under its timber pergola.

Now think about guests. Set two of these chairs either side of a low table, run an [outdoor bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/outdoor-cushions/) along the wall for three more, and add tie-on pads to the dining chairs. Keep one [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/) and one piping color across the lot, and a mixed bunch of frames still reads as one terrace. How many people do you need to seat on a good Saturday, friend?

## Pinned by Callum: poolside, from pergola to teak

Five pins, from the deep seat cushion out to the folded towels and up to the pergola.

1. **Deep-seat cushion**: Nearly twice a dining pad's thickness, which is what makes this a lounge chair.
2. **Pinstriped back**: Stripes run top to bottom and continue down the seat front.
3. **Folded pool towels**: White towels on teak repeat the ivory and wood pairing.
4. **Teak frame**: The only warm tone against limestone and ivory.
5. **Pool house pergola**: Plaster and timber set the calm Mediterranean backdrop.

## A whole lounge corner, in one list

A buyer got in touch to furnish an outdoor lounge corner in one outdoor fabric with matching piping. The list ran long: two firm seats at 50 3/4 x 26 3/8 in (129 x 67 cm) and one at 39 x 19 1/4 in (99 x 49 cm), all 3 1/8 in (8 cm) thick; three softer backs at 33 7/8 x 18 7/8 in (86 x 48 cm) and 4 3/4 in (12 cm) thick, settled after two revisions; three 15 3/4 in (40 cm) square scatter cushions; and four chair pads at 18 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 1 1/4 in (47 x 47 x 3 cm) with ribbons on two corners. Anti-slip went under the seats.

Partway through, the workshop read a centimeter figure as inches. Rain doesn't negotiate, and neither did the buyer: from then on every size was in centimeters, and the workshop sent a full spec list to approve before anything was cut. The set took 10 days to make and went out in two parcels.

Big hosting orders are where small slips hide. One unit system, one approved list, and the whole [patio](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) arrives as a set. For single loungers, [chaise and sunbed sizing](https://cushionguide.com/guides/chaise-lounge-sunbed-cushion-size/) covers the measuring.

## Ordering seating for a crowd without a mix-up

1. **Pick one unit system**: Write every size in inches or every size in centimeters, never a mix, and say which at the top of the list.
2. **Split firm from soft**: Seats want firmer foam; backs can be softer and thicker, like the 3 1/8 in seats and 4 3/4 in backs above.
3. **Keep one fabric and one piping**: Loungers, bench and chair pads in the same outdoor fabric and piping read as one set, even on mixed frames.
4. **Add grip where people shuffle**: Ask for ties on chair pads and anti-slip under long seats that get sat on and stood up from all evening.
5. **Approve the full list**: Ask for a spec list of every piece, size and thickness, and approve it before anything is cut.

## On the cutting table: the pool chair set

| | |
|---|---|
| Product | Deep seat and back cushions for a teak lounge chair |
| Fabric | Ivory outdoor acrylic with fine taupe pinstripes |
| Stripe direction | Vertical on the back, continuing down the seat front |
| Piping | Self piping |
| Edge | Box edge |
| Seat depth | Nearly twice a dining pad's thickness |
| Covers | Zipped, so they can be washed after a season of sunscreen |
| Outdoor range | Four outdoor charts, water-, UV- and fade-resistant, woven not vinyl |
| Best for | Pool terraces and lounge corners where guests stay for hours |

> For a big outdoor cushion order, put every size in one unit system and approve a full spec list before cutting; one centimeter read as an inch spoils a set.

> **Tailor's margin:** By a pool, choose light outdoor cushions with zipped covers, so they can come off and be washed after a season of sunscreen.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick is a deep-seat cushion on an outdoor lounge chair?

Think in proportion. On this teak lounge chair the seat cushion is close to twice a dining pad's thickness. In one lounge-corner order the seats were firm at 3 1/8 in (8 cm) and the backs softer at 4 3/4 in (12 cm).

### Why pick ivory and taupe for cushions beside a pool?

In hard midday sun, ivory and taupe stay visually cool and match pale limestone, while a teak frame supplies the warmth. Light colors do show sunscreen marks, so ask for zipped covers that come off for washing.

### How do mixed outdoor chairs and benches look like one group?

Use one outdoor fabric and one piping color on every cushion, whatever the frame. Loungers, a bench and dining chairs of different shapes then read as a single set around the terrace, and guests see one room instead of a collection.
