# An ivory linen-look bench cushion, inspected detail by detail

*Nate takes a reading corner apart like a drawing: seat-to-bench ratio, welt, corners, pillow trim, and a cover that can be remade without new foam.*

> **The quick answer:** A well-made linen-look bench cushion shows its craft at the edges: a straight welt, square box corners, and piping that ties the pillows to the seat. Here the ivory seat is about a quarter of the bench's height, and the olive khaki lumbar pillows are piped in ivory. A zippered cover means a wrong color can be remade while the foam stays.

## Field notes, page one: the reading corner

Partner, a bench cushion tells you who made it in about six inches of edge.

The photo: a low wooden bench in a sunlit corner, an ivory [linen-look](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/linen-look-fabrics/) box cushion, and two olive khaki lumbar pillows standing in for a backrest against a plain wall. A floor lamp with a linen drum shade. A fern in a white pot. A chunky jute rug. A sheer curtain doing the light's paperwork.

Measurement one, by eye: the seat cushion is about a quarter of the bench's height. Thick enough for an hour's read, slim enough that the bench still looks light. That 1:4 ratio is worth copying on any [reading nook cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/reading-nook-cushions/).

Measurement two: the pillows are olive, but their piping is ivory, the seat's color. One trim decision, and two fabrics read as one set. The lamp shade, the rug and the fern repeat the same wheat and green, so nothing looks bolted on.

What does your bench measure, floor to top? Divide by four and you have a starting thickness. The [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) lets you try it before you order.

## Pinned by Nate

Five pins, each one a line item on the inspection sheet.

1. **Olive lumbar pillow**: Wide lumbar pillows act as a backrest against a plain wall.
2. **Ivory contrast piping**: Piping in the seat color ties the pillows back to the cushion.
3. **Ivory box seat**: A slim box cushion keeps the low bench looking light.
4. **Linen floor lamp**: The wheat-toned shade repeats the ivory seat.
5. **Jute rug**: Natural fiber underfoot anchors the pale bench.

## 6 hand-finished details on an ivory bench cushion

- ✓ Welt runs straight along the full front edge, with no wander at the corners
- ✓ Box corners are square: the boxing strip meets the top panel at 90°
- ✓ Piping color is chosen on purpose, here ivory on olive to tie pillows to seat
- ✓ Seat thickness is in proportion, about 1/4 of the bench height
- ✓ Cover is zippered and removable, so the fabric can change without new foam
- ✓ Pillow corners are filled out, not collapsed, when the pillows stand upright

## The rose that read as purple

A buyer wrote in about two kitchen bench cushions in a pastel scheme. They loved the craftsmanship. The color, not so much: a planned light rose and light blue in linen read as dark pink-purple and deep blue once they arrived.

The shop asked for daylight photos first, to rule out an error. Then it offered replacement covers at production cost, so the foam could stay. After seeing real photos of soft fabrics side by side, the buyer chose 931 with 906 piping, and two new covers were made.

Engineering note: very light shades show the widest spread between screens. Ask for side-by-side photos of real fabric before you commit; see [screen versus daylight](https://cushionguide.com/guides/cushion-color-screen-vs-daylight/). And note what saved this job: a zippered cover. The foam is the frame, the cover is the finish, and a finish can be redone. ## Buyer questions: price, odd sizes and odd shapes

**A common question:** Ballpark, what does a made-to-measure bench cushion cost?

**The workshop's answer:** Choose your size range and thickness on the listing and the price appears. Anything unusual gets a quote by message; quotes have covered everything from a 34 x 6 x 4 in stair cushion and a 24 x 55 in (60 x 140 cm) linen cushion 5 in (12.5 cm) thick to a trapezoid bay seat with a 107.5 in back edge.

**A common question:** My exact size isn't listed. Which option do I pick?

**The workshop's answer:** Pick the closest option, usually the next size up, and write your exact dimensions, thickness and fabric and piping codes in the personalization box. The cushion is cut to your numbers: 17 x 52 in went through the 18 x 52 option, 47 x 18.5 in through 18 x 48. If nothing is close, the shop adds your size or creates a custom option for you.

**A common question:** My window bench isn't a plain rectangle. Can you still make the cushion?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, shaped seats are routine. Order through the custom trapezoid/shape listing, choose the size range by your longest and deepest measurements, and upload a drawing with every measurement in Add Personalization, with thickness and fabric code. The cushion follows the drawing exactly, and you can send it by message first for a check.

> **Tailor's margin:** Make the seat cushion about 1/4 of the bench height: thick enough for an hour's read, slim enough to keep the bench looking light.

## Questions buyers ask next

### How thick should a reading bench cushion be?

Scale it to the bench. On this low bench the seat is about a quarter of the bench's height, enough padding for long reading without making the bench look heavy. Measure floor to bench top and divide by four as a starting point.

### Should pillow piping match the pillow or the seat?

Match the seat when you want pillows and cushion to read as one set. Olive pillows piped in ivory, the seat color, tie back to the bench cushion; olive piping would make them look like separate purchases.

### Can I replace a cushion cover without buying new foam?

Yes, when the cover is zippered. In one case the workshop remade just the covers at production cost after a color turned out wrong, and the buyer kept the original foam inserts.

### How do I keep a pastel cushion from arriving darker than expected?

Very light shades vary most between screens. Ask for photos of the real fabrics side by side in daylight before you choose. One buyer's light rose, picked on a screen, read as dark pink-purple once it arrived.
