# An ivory corduroy window seat cushion, and how daylight draws its edges

*A white seat on a white bench, with a garden in spring out the window. On paper it should vanish. The light keeps it from vanishing.*

> **The quick answer:** An ivory corduroy window seat cushion stays visible on white joinery because light catches its ribs and its piped box seams. Bright daylight draws those edges; evening light softens them toward cream, and a phone screen often flattens ivory into plain white. Judge the shade at your own window, and ask for a zippered cover you can wash.

## Pinned by Rosa: five soft spots in the garden window

Five pins, from the ribbed ivory seat to the upright books that balance the far end of the sill.

1. **Ivory cord cushion**: Rib shadows and piping give a white-on-white seat its edges.
2. **Ivory linen pillow**: Flat linen keeps the cord as the main texture.
3. **Oatmeal pillow**: One step darker than the seat to separate pillow from cushion.
4. **Olive tree**: Terracotta pot is the only warm accent, placed just above the pillows.
5. **Books on sill**: Upright spines at the far end mirror the pillows at the near end.

## Ribs, piping and one warm pot

Neighbor, when someone tells me they want a white cushion on a white bench, I think of my grandmother's porch swing, painted every spring and covered in something the color of buttermilk. It looked wonderful at nine in the morning and flat by supper.

This ivory corduroy window seat cushion holds up all day, and the reason is texture. The ribs catch the garden light and each one throws a hairline shadow. The piped box seams trace the cushion like a pencil line on the painted base. Take away ribs and piping and the seat would melt into the bench.

The pillows are flat linen, one ivory and one oatmeal. Linen keeps the corduroy as the only texture in the corner, and oatmeal sits one step darker than the seat so pillow and cushion separate.

There is one warm color, placed on purpose. The terracotta pot under the olive tree sits right above the pillows, so your eye climbs the tree and drops back to the seat. Books stand upright at the far end of the sill, with a white lidded jar and a bud vase in between.

Now the light. Bright spring daylight makes ivory clean, nearly white. Late afternoon warms it toward cream, and the oatmeal pillow almost melts into it. A phone screen flattens ivory, cream and white into one. When do you sit in your window? Choose the shade for that hour, with a [swatch in hand](https://cushionguide.com/guides/fabric-swatches-before-ordering/). The [corduroy library](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/), the [window seat cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/window-seat-cushions/) atlas and the [off-white sketches](https://cushionguide.com/concepts/cloud-dancer-off-white-cushions/) go further.

## Swatch strip: four pale tones and two from the tree

- Ivory corduroy — #F2ECDF — The seat; the ribs add the shadow a flat white lacks.
- Painted bench white — #F7F6F1 — A cooler white, so the cushion reads warmer against it.
- Ivory linen — #EEE7D8 — The first pillow, flat-woven so the corduroy stays the only texture.
- Oatmeal linen — #D8CAAF — One step darker, so pillow and cushion separate.
- Terracotta — #B5643F — The only warm accent, set right above the pillows.
- Olive leaf — #7A8156 — A muted green between the garden outside and the pale seat.

## The backrest that was not a sofa

A buyer in the US was furnishing an apartment and needed a whole couch. They chose the corduroy option labeled 'straight backrest', believing it was the full sofa with a straight back. What arrived was one backrest, 39 x 15 x 15 in (99 x 38 x 38 cm).

Sending it back would have cost far more in shipping than anyone wanted to pay. The shop offered the rest of the sofa at a discount, and that was still over budget. In the end the buyer kept the backrest and received a partial refund.

Nobody was careless. The option name simply said less than the buyer read into it. Read what each option includes the way you read a color in the light: slowly, and twice. The [backrest cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/backrest-cushions/) atlas shows what a backrest alone looks like.

## Buyer questions: tufting, lids and one-piece sizes

**A common question:** Could you make a tufted velvet cushion 84 x 24 in, and would other sizes work too?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. An 84 in long by 24 in deep (213 x 61 cm) tufted cushion in high-quality velvet was quoted, and other sizes such as 26 x 72 in (66 x 183 cm) can be made on request.

**A common question:** The bench under my window has lift-up lids. Can the cushion be split to match them?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The cushions can be divided at the lid lines so each section lifts with its own lid. Send a clear drawing with every edge measured. If the sections differ, even by about 1.5 in (4 cm) in depth, each one needs its own drawing showing front, back, both sides and the depth at each end.

**A common question:** If I order a 40 x 80 in cushion, does it arrive as one piece or several?

**The workshop's answer:** One piece, at the size you order. If you want sections, place a separate order for each smaller cushion, for example four orders of 40 x 20 in (102 x 51 cm).

> **Tailor's margin:** Pale cushion, busy house: ask for a zippered cover that comes off for washing. Kids and dogs are the real quality control.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Will an ivory cushion disappear on a white painted window seat?

Not if it has texture and a defined edge. Corduroy ribs cast fine shadows and piping outlines the box seams, so the cushion reads as its own shape against painted wood. A smooth, unpiped white would blend in far more.

### Why does ivory fabric look pure white in photos online?

Cameras and screens often brighten pale colors and push warm whites toward neutral, so the yellow in an ivory can vanish on a phone. Look at a swatch in your own window, at the hour you usually sit there.

### Which pillows sit well on a corduroy window seat without competing?

Flat-woven linen. It keeps the corduroy ribs as the only texture, so the corner stays calm. Take one pillow a step darker than the cushion, like oatmeal against ivory, so the two separate.

### How can I tell whether a listing option is one component or the whole sofa?

Read the option name, its description and its dimensions before checkout. A single size such as 39 x 15 x 15 in describes one piece. If a photo shows more than that size could cover, ask the shop what arrives.
