# An ivory pinstripe outdoor bench cushion, and the message that gets it made right

*A white bench, a sunny patio, a crisp stripe. Getting it right took one clear message, and I'll show you what went in it.*

> **The quick answer:** To order a custom bench cushion right the first time, send one message with every piece as length x depth x thickness, the fabric and piping codes rather than color names, and a photo of the bench. The workshop makes cushions to the full size you give, with no deduction, so measure the seat surface itself, not an old cushion.

## Crisp stripe, chunky frame, full sun

Full summer sun is the hardest light a cushion gets. It flattens a solid and turns a pale seat into a sheet of glare.

This [garden bench cushion](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/) dodges that. Ivory ground, fine charcoal pinstripes, a box edge. The lines give the eye something to hold on a white-painted slatted bench, so the seat reads as a cushion. Deck chair, not hospital.

Proportion first. The cushion stands about as tall as the bench's back rail, plump without looking puffed. A thin pad on a chunky frame looks like an afterthought. Self piping in the same stripe keeps the edge quiet.

The props work. A young olive in a mossy terracotta pot, boxwood and herbs in clay: terracotta is the only warm color, and it stops the black-and-white palette going cold. Stone paving underfoot. And the second striped cushion in the foreground ties separate seats into one patio.

This stripe is [outdoor acrylic](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/), solution-dyed, so the color runs through the fiber and pale grounds can take a bleach clean. Rain doesn't negotiate. Your order shouldn't either.

## Pinned by Callum: bench, pots and the second seat

Five pins, from the pinstripe on the bench to the olive in its mossy pot.

1. **Pinstripe bench cushion**: Charcoal lines stop an all-white bench from looking flat.
2. **Plump box front**: Thickness matches the chunky painted frame.
3. **Foreground cushion**: The same stripe on a second seat connects the patio.
4. **Olive in mossy pot**: Terracotta warms the black-and-white palette.
5. **Painted bench frame**: White paint lets the stripe read crisp and clean.

## The order message, in five lines

1. **Every piece, three numbers**: Length x depth x thickness for each cushion, in inches, with a quantity. The workshop sews to the full size you write.
2. **Seat only, or more**: Say whether you need backrests or arm cushions. You'll be asked anyway, and a yes changes the fabric count.
3. **Codes, not color names**: Write the fabric code and the piping code. Cream means four things to four people; a code means one.
4. **A photo of the bench**: Straight on, tape measure in the shot. It settles overhang, legs and back rails before anyone cuts.
5. **Swatches for anything close**: If two codes look alike on screen, ask for swatches or a daylight photo while a code can still be switched.

## Three cushions in the buyer's own cloth

A buyer in the US wanted three cushions in their own upholstery fabric, in two colors: two tufted bench cushions at 14.5 x 78.5 in (37 x 199 cm) and 14.5 x 64.5 in (37 x 164 cm), plus one at 38 x 75 in (97 x 191 cm), all 6 in (15 cm) thick. They asked how many yards to buy and how the edges would be finished.

The workshop didn't guess the yardage. It asked for a direct photo of the fabric and its fiber type, and checked whether backrests or armrests were part of the job.

That's ordering smart from both ends. With your own cloth, fiber and width drive the math; run a first pass in the [fabric yardage calculator](https://cushionguide.com/studio/fabric-yardage-calculator/).

## Buyer questions: exact sizes, split backs, piping color

**A common question:** Do you make the cushion to my exact bench size, or a little smaller?

**The workshop's answer:** To the full dimensions you give, with nothing taken off. For a dining bench, the workshop advised matching the actual seat surface closely rather than planning an overhang.

**A common question:** Can my one long back cushion be split into two pieces?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, at no extra charge before production. One 19 x 63 in (48 x 160 cm) back became two 19 x 31.5 in (48 x 80 cm) pieces spanning the same 63 in, then was shortened to 17 in (43 cm) because it sits on top of the seat cushion.

**A common question:** Could you choose the piping color for me?

**The workshop's answer:** The workshop prefers you choose, since color is personal, but will suggest one if asked: L-02, a light cream that blends with a pale pattern, or L-01, lighter and whiter. It may not be a 100% identical match and the choice stays yours, so switch codes before production if you'd rather.

## On the cutting table: the pinstripe bench

| | |
|---|---|
| Cushion | Rectangular boxed bench cushion |
| Fabric | Ivory outdoor acrylic, charcoal pinstripes |
| Piping | Self piping in the same stripe |
| Thickness | About the height of the back rail |
| Size rule | Full size as ordered, no deduction |
| Fit | Close to the seat surface, no overhang |
| Order note | Fabric and piping as codes |
| Best for | Painted garden benches in full sun |

> **Tailor's margin:** Two fabric codes that look alike on screen deserve a daylight photo before production. Switching a code is easy until the cloth is cut.

## Questions buyers ask next

### What should the first message about a custom bench cushion include?

Every piece as length x depth x thickness with a quantity, whether backrests or arms are needed, the fabric and piping codes, and a straight-on photo of the bench with a tape measure in it. One complete message saves days of questions.

### Can I supply my own fabric for a bench cushion?

Yes. Expect the workshop to ask for a direct photo of the cloth and its fiber type before working out the yardage, and to check whether backrests or arms are part of the job. Use the yardage calculator for a first estimate.

### Why does a pinstripe suit a white-painted garden bench?

Fine charcoal lines give an all-white bench an edge, so the seat reads clearly in bright sun instead of flattening into glare. The same stripe repeats easily on a second seat, which ties separate pieces into one patio.

### Is solution-dyed acrylic worth it for a bench left in full sun?

For a bench that lives outside, yes. The color runs through the fiber rather than sitting on the surface, the cloth feels soft, and pale grounds can take a bleach clean. It sheds rain, but the cushion still needs to dry between storms.
