# An indigo corduroy custom bench cushion trimmed in mustard, measured the right way

*Élodie reads a jumbo-wale indigo seat on a slim oak bench, a cord taken straight from the carpet, and the three numbers that make a custom cushion sit true.*

> **The quick answer:** To measure a freestanding bench for a custom cushion, take the length end to end and the depth front to back across the top of the seat itself, then choose a thickness. Send those true numbers in inches or centimeters and the shop checks them before quoting. Measure the bench, never an old cushion, and treat each straight run of a banquette as its own cushion.

## A cord taken straight off the floor

The piping on this seat came from the carpet. A mustard cord, the same golden note as the wool underfoot, runs around a cushion of indigo jumbo corduroy, and suddenly the bench looks dressed for this room and no other.

Blue and golden yellow sit across from each other on the color wheel, so they sharpen one another without quarreling. The pale oak bench stays out of their way; it is the plain page both colors are printed on. The [wide wales](https://cushionguide.com/glossary/#wide-wale-corduroy) give the indigo its depth. Each rib catches the soft indoor light on one flank and holds a little shadow on the other, so one blue becomes three: ink in the grooves, washed denim on the crowns, a deep Prussian where the pile turns away.

Look at the proportion, too. The cushion is thick for such a slim bench, and that is what turns a perch into a proper seat. A snake plant in a terracotta pot rises on the left to answer the long, low line. A glazed vase repeats the warm earth of the carpet. Stacked books on an oak side table keep the scene lived-in, and a framed picture above pulls the eye up so the bench never seems to sink into the floor.

Let one color speak and the others listen, my friends. Here indigo speaks; mustard, oak and green listen. What color lives under your bench?

## Pinned by Élodie

Follow the mustard cord along the front edge, drop down to the carpet it was matched to, then rise to the plant that balances the long bench.

1. **Mustard contrast piping**: The cord is matched to the carpet, framing the indigo like a trimmed jacket.
2. **Jumbo indigo wales**: Wide ribs give the blue depth and a soft, touchable surface.
3. **Snake plant**: An upright plant balances the long, low bench.
4. **Ceramic vase**: Earthy glaze repeats the warm tones of the carpet.
5. **Mustard carpet**: The floor color sets the piping, so the cushion looks custom-matched.

## Measuring this exact seat: three numbers and two traps

1. **Length, end to end across the top**: Measure the seat surface from one end to the other. A freestanding bench has no walls to fit between, so the cushion simply follows the top.
2. **Depth, front edge to back edge**: Measure straight across, square to the front. If the edges are rounded, measure the flat seat, not around the curve.
3. **Thickness, chosen for the look**: Decide what you want to see. A thick cushion on a slim bench reads as a real seat, as it does here; a thin one reads as a pad.
4. **Trap one: measuring the old cushion**: An old cushion may have slumped, or never fit in the first place. The bench is the truth, so measure the bench.
5. **Trap two: one number for a U or an L**: A banquette with several runs is not one cushion. Measure each straight run on its own and order each as its own cushion.

## A U-shaped banquette ordered as three straight cushions

A buyer in the US wrote to the workshop about a U-shaped banquette in a home with pets. They wanted a taupe, pet-friendly fabric with welting. The runs measured two sides of 63.5 x 21.5 in (161 x 55 cm) and one back run of 93.5 x 21.5 in (237 x 55 cm), all 2 in (5 cm) thick.

The shop sent its pet-friendly fabric chart and explained the method: each run is ordered as its own cushion on the same listing, and piping comes as standard. Three honest rectangles instead of one impossible U.

That is the measuring lesson I would pin above every banquette: one run, one cushion, one set of numbers. The [bench measuring pattern](https://cushionguide.com/guides/how-to-measure-bench-for-cushion/) walks through each tape stroke, the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) lets you try thicknesses before you send anything, and the jumbo wales live on the [corduroy shelf](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/corduroy/).

## On the cutting table: indigo and mustard

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Freestanding bench cushion, rectangular |
| Body fabric | Indigo jumbo-wale corduroy |
| Piping | Contrast mustard, matched to the carpet |
| Edge | Box |
| Proportion | Thick for a slim bench, so it reads as a seat |
| Measure | Bench top: length end to end, depth front to back |
| Units accepted | Inches, centimeters or millimeters |
| Changes | Body or piping color can change before production |
| Best for | Living rooms with a strongly colored rug or carpet |

## Buyer questions

**A common question:** My bench doesn't match any of the listed sizes. Can you make a cushion to its exact length and depth?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Every cushion can be made to exact measurements. Send the length and depth, plus thickness if you know it, in inches, centimeters or millimeters, and the shop checks the details and sends a quote.

**A common question:** How do I pick a color that goes with my furniture or my wallpaper?

**The workshop's answer:** Send a photo of the room or the set in good light and the shop suggests fabric codes. For one wallpaper it proposed beige, khaki green or brown, or velvets in olive, off-white, mustard or dark brown for a calm look, with a brighter mustard or burnt orange as accents. Large close-up photos of fabric rolls are available on request.

**A common question:** I've already ordered. Is there still time to change the fabric or the piping color?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, as long as the cushion hasn't gone into production. Send the new body and piping codes, or ask for the piping to match the body, and the order is updated right away.

> If a rug or carpet has a strong color, use that color for the piping and the bench cushion will look made for the room.

> **Tailor's margin:** Measure the bench top, never the old cushion: length end to end, depth front to back, then choose the thickness.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Why does jumbo corduroy look like several shades of one color?

Jumbo, or wide-wale, corduroy has broad raised ribs. Each rib catches light on one side and shades the other, so a single dye reads deeper in the grooves and lighter on the crowns, especially in soft side light.

### Where should I look for a piping color for a blue bench cushion?

Look down. A strongly colored rug or carpet gives the easiest piping color, as mustard does under this indigo seat. Blue and golden yellow are natural opposites, so the cord frames the cushion without fighting it.

### Is a thick cushion too much for a slim freestanding bench?

Not if you want a real seat. On this slim oak bench a noticeably thick cushion turns a perch into somewhere to sit for a while. A thin pad suits a bench that is mostly for show or for pulling on shoes.

### Why split a U-shaped banquette into three cushions?

Each straight run is simpler to measure, sew and handle. One buyer's U was two 63.5 in (161 cm) sides and a 93.5 in (237 cm) back run, all 21.5 in (55 cm) deep and 2 in (5 cm) thick, ordered as three cushions on one listing.
