# A bottle-green velvet bench cushion with a hidden zipper, between honey oak and terracotta

*Élodie reads a close-up: one hand opening a hidden zipper on green velvet, warm oak above, baked terracotta below. The color story is written in those three materials.*

> **The quick answer:** A custom bench cushion in bottle-green velvet looks richest where warm materials surround it: honey oak and terracotta tile make the green read deeper. A concealed zipper in green tape runs along the side band, hidden under a fold, so the cover comes off for cleaning. Standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm); other thicknesses go in the order note.

## Pinned by Élodie

Five pins, from the green zipper pull to the terracotta tile that warms the whole frame.

1. **zipper pull**: A slim zip in matching green disappears into the velvet when closed.
2. **cream inner liner**: A cotton liner protects the foam and lets the cover slide back on easily.
3. **concealed zipper track**: The zipper is tucked under a fold of fabric so the teeth never show.
4. **hand opening cover**: Removable covers mean the velvet can be cleaned without touching the foam.
5. **terracotta floor**: Warm tile under a green cushion is a pairing worth repeating.

## Bottle green between honey oak and baked clay

Bottle green is a color that needs warmth around it, and this close-up gives it two kinds.

Above the cushion runs an oak rail, honey-toned and softly worn. Below lies terracotta tile, the orange-red of baked clay. Red clay sits opposite green on the color wheel, so the tile pushes the velvet deeper, toward the green of a wet leaf. The oak does gentler work: a warm brown with a golden cast that keeps the green from turning cold.

Now watch the sheen. Velvet pile catches raking sun on its crest and falls dark in its folds, so one bottle green becomes three or four greens along the side band. Let one color speak and the others listen.

The self piping is cut from the same velvet. It draws a thin highlight along the box edge rather than a contrasting line, and the cushion reads as one soft block.

Each prop has a reason. The hand with its thin gold ring gives scale and a small note of warm metal. The cream liner showing through the open zipper is the only pale color in the frame; it protects the foam and helps the cover slide back on. The zipper tape is dyed green and tucked under a fold, so once the cushion is pushed to the wall, nothing shows.

My friends, when you choose velvet for a bench, hold the swatch against your floor before your wall. The floor is the bigger warm surface, and it decides the green. What color is the floor under your bench?

More greens wait in the [velvet](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/velvet/) library and our [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/); the [bench cushion builder](https://cushionguide.com/studio/bench-cushion-builder/) sizes one.

## Swatch strip: four colors in one close-up

- Bottle green velvet — #1F4A36 — The cushion itself: dark in the folds, brighter on the crest.
- Cream liner — #EDE3CC — The only pale note, seen through the open zipper.
- Honey oak — #B07F45 — A warm brown with a golden cast; keeps the green from going cold.
- Terracotta tile — #B4553A — Red clay opposite green; it makes the velvet look deeper.

## Two cushions for the gap beside a child's bed

One buyer wrote in with a small, stubborn problem: pillows kept dropping into the gap between a child's mattress and the wall.

The answer was a shallow bench cushion set along the wall. The workshop made it 4 in (10 cm) thick to fill the gap and 17 in (43 cm) high so it stays below the light switch, with a non-slip base to hold it in place. The length followed the bed.

The body was linen and the piping was velvet. The buyer ordered two pieces with two different piping colors, one of them a teal green, and both arrived and fit exactly. A linen body with a velvet edge is a thrifty way to bring velvet into a child's room.

## Buyer questions: thickness, late changes and backrests on their own

**A common question:** Can you make my bench cushion thinner or thicker than 4 inches, say 2 in or 6 in?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. The standard thickness is 4 in (10 cm), and the workshop has made cushions at 2 in, 3 in, 5 in and 6 in (5, 7.5, 12.5 and 15 cm). Choose the nearest option on the listing and write the exact thickness you want in the order note.

**A common question:** I just ordered and got the size wrong. Can I still change the size or color, or add ties?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes, as long as production hasn't moved ahead. The workshop has switched a fabric to olive with terracotta piping, corrected a cushion from 18 x 47 1/4 in (46 x 120 cm) to 15 1/2 x 47 in (39.5 x 119.5 cm), and added ties on all four corners after checkout. Message quickly: a late reply can mean the original choice has already gone into production.

**A common question:** Could I order just the two L-shaped backrests, without the sofa they belong to?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Backrests are made and sold on their own, including a pair of L-shaped corner backrests, and covers alone for the two backrests can be ordered too if you already have the fillings.

| Care | Cover comes off for cleaning without handling the foam |
| Best for | Entry and kitchen benches over warm wood or tile |

> **Tailor's margin:** On a deep bench cushion, ask for the zipper to wrap around both back corners; the velvet cover slides back over the foam far more easily.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Does velvet work on an entry or kitchen bench?

Yes, when the cover comes off. A concealed zipper lets the velvet be cleaned without touching the foam, and a cotton liner keeps the insert protected while the cover is away.

### Where should the zipper go on a bench cushion?

On the side band that faces the wall. With matching tape tucked under a fold it disappears once the cushion is in place, and on deep cushions, wrapping it around both back corners makes refitting easier.

### Which floors suit a green velvet cushion?

Warm ones. Terracotta tile sits opposite green on the color wheel, and honey oak's golden cast keeps green from turning cold, so both make velvet look richer. Hold the swatch against the floor before the wall.

### Can a bench cushion fill the gap between a bed and a wall?

Yes. One buyer ordered a piece 4 in (10 cm) thick and 17 in (43 cm) high, so it cleared a light switch, with a non-slip base, and it stopped pillows dropping behind a child's mattress.
