# A hexagon print outdoor bench cushion and one long rust pillow

*A letter from Callum about a deck bench at dusk, a forgiving hexagon print, and the single pillow that turns a bench into a sofa.*

> **The quick answer:** Style an outdoor bench cushion with one long back pillow cut to the full seat length rather than two short ones. Here a hexagon print seat is piped in rust orange to match a single rust pillow across the slats, and black side tables, railing and grill frame the print. The busy weave also hides pollen and spills on a deck.

## A letter from the deck, written at dusk

Friend,

One pillow did more for this deck bench than two ever would have. I've kept the photograph pinned by my cutting table since it came in, and I keep coming back to that.

The scene: a composite deck, a black metal railing, woods behind. An acacia bench with a slatted back stands between two black side tables. On the seat, a box cushion in a woven hexagon print of orange, teal, yellow and navy on white, piped in rust orange along both edges. Across the back, one long rust pillow cut to the full seat length. Clear early-evening light, the kind that makes orange look warmer than it is.

I spent a few winters fixing sun-bleached boat cushions, and I'll tell you what a print like this is for. It forgives. Spilled lemonade, pollen off the trees, a wet dog's paws: they all hide in the pattern until you get the hose out. A pale solid shows every one by noon.

Water-repellent is a promise; waterproof is a contract. Know which one you bought before the first thunderstorm, and read [water-repellent vs waterproof](https://cushionguide.com/guides/water-repellent-vs-waterproof-cushions/) if you're not sure. The seat cloth here comes from the [outdoor acrylic family](https://cushionguide.com/fabrics/outdoor-acrylic/).

## Pinned by Callum

Five pins, from the long rust pillow to the succulent on the side table.

1. **Long rust back pillow**: One full-length pillow turns the bench into a small sofa.
2. **Hexagon weave seat**: A multicolour hexagon forgives spills and pollen on a deck.
3. **Rust seat piping**: Orange piping repeats the pillow color along both seat edges.
4. **Covered grill**: Dark outdoor kit frames the bright print.
5. **Succulent pot**: A small green accent on the side table.

## Why the pillow is rust and the side tables are black

Start with the pillow. One long pillow instead of two short ones hides the slats completely and turns the bench into a small sofa. Two pillows leave a gap in the middle, and the gap is where the eye goes. The rust matches the seat piping, so the two pieces are tied together by one line of color running along the front edge and across the back.

The dark kit is working too. The black railing, the two black side tables and the covered grill give the bright print a frame, the way a dark hull makes a painted waterline stand out. Take them away and the cushion would float loose on a pale deck.

The succulent in a dark pot is the only green that isn't in the woods. It's small on purpose. One plant in a dark pot looks chosen; five look like a garden center.

Copy it in three moves. Measure the full seat length and ask for one [lumbar pillow](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/lumbar-pillows/) cut to it. Take the piping color from the pillow, not from the print. Keep the furniture around it dark. What's the darkest thing on your deck right now?

## Two cushions, two lengths, one homemade bench

A buyer got in touch while building a wooden bench. They needed two 2 in (5 cm) cushions, 63 x 15.7 in (160 x 40 cm) and 31.5 x 15.7 in (80 x 40 cm). Neither size was on the menu.

The workshop's fix was tidy. Order two of the 16 x 47 in (41 x 119 cm) options, since the combined length works out the same, and write the real sizes in the note. They wanted the green cushion with yellow piping from the first listing photo, which had been made under older fabric codes, so the workshop matched it from the photo itself. The cloth was a durable performance fabric. The buyer finished the bench before ordering, and the discount was held for them until they did.

Build first, measure second, order third. See [custom sizes not on the menu](https://cushionguide.com/guides/custom-size-cushion-not-on-menu/), and more deck seating among the [patio and porch cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/patio-and-porch-cushions/) and [bench cushions](https://cushionguide.com/cushions/bench-cushions/).

## On the cutting table

| | |
|---|---|
| Piece | Box seat cushion for a slatted-back acacia deck bench |
| Seat fabric | Woven outdoor hexagon print: orange, teal, yellow and navy on white |
| Piping | Contrast rust orange along both seat edges |
| Back | One long rust pillow cut to the full seat length |
| Frame | Black railing, black side tables, covered grill |
| Accent | One succulent in a dark pot |
| Two-fabric rule | Second color on the side band, not the bottom face |
| Best for | Decks, patios and covered porches |

## Buyer questions: a broken zipper, two-tone faces, covers only

**A common question:** The cushion fits, but the zipper arrived broken. Can I get my money back?

**The workshop's answer:** Instead of a refund, the workshop made and shipped a brand-new set of covers free of charge.

**A common question:** Could the top of my cushion be one color and the bottom another?

**The workshop's answer:** It isn't recommended: the zipper runs along one edge and shows on a two-tone cushion, which doesn't look good. What works is keeping top and bottom in one fabric and making the side band (the boxing) in the second color. Write both fabric codes with the order.

**A common question:** Can I buy only the cover for my trapezoid window seat?

**The workshop's answer:** Yes. Send every exact measurement, ideally on a drawing with each side labeled, and the cover alone will be quoted.

> Take outdoor bench cushion piping from the back pillow, not from the print; rust piping plus one rust pillow draws a single line of color.

> **Tailor's margin:** Build the bench first, then measure it, then order the cushion. Two different lengths can be priced as two equal stock sizes with the same total length.

## Questions buyers ask next

### Should a deck bench have one long back pillow or two short ones?

On a short bench, one pillow cut to the full seat length hides the slats and makes the bench read like a small sofa. Two short pillows leave a gap in the middle that draws the eye.

### What piping color works with a multicolor outdoor print?

Take it from an accent you repeat elsewhere, such as the back pillow, rather than trying to match the whole print. Rust piping with a rust pillow links seat and back with one line of color.

### Why choose a busy print for an outdoor bench cushion?

A multicolor print forgives spills, pollen and paw marks between cleanings, while a pale solid shows them quickly. Dark furniture around the bench gives a bright print a frame so it doesn't look loud.

### Can two cushions of different lengths be ordered on standard size options?

Yes, when their combined length matches two equal stock sizes. One buyer ordered two 16 x 47 in options for cushions of 63 in and 31.5 in and wrote the real sizes in the note.
